That statue is of a Peshmerga, originally with a Kurdish flag. It was built during the ISIS period when Kurdistan stepped up to protect Kirkuk from ISIS. But what did the Shia Arabs do? As a thanks, they kicked the Kurds out of Kirkuk after the ISIS threat was over and started to oppress the Kurdish population, and they replaced the flag with an Iraqi flag. Because of the oil, the government wants to keep Kirkuk in the federalpart of Iraq. There don't want the Kurds get access to the extra oil income. Meanwhile, the innocent population of Kirkuk suffered. That is the story behind the statue. Thank you for visiting Iraq, I hope you had a good time and I am looking forward to your next adventure.

hahahaha we were the same when starting the trip and coming in to the hotter countries!! but slowly we built some tolerance... even so, 50C was disgusting! Thanks, Dave!
Parts of Baghdad have a similar feeling to Erbil, in terms of being developed and vibrant, but then Erbil has the historic centre and citadel, which I don't think Baghdad has, also Baghdad still has some signs of the war in some areas. Erbil had a more relaxed and safer feeling - we walked around everywhere. I can't say whether Baghdad is actually any more or less safe, but with the military/police everywhere and the recent protests, we didn't feel like we should wander around at night - but we were fortunate to meet the Iraq bikers who showed us around. Probably we didn't spend long enough in either city to give a proper comparison!
By the way was there any speeding limits and did you have to apply for a international driving permit? (asking because I’m going to visit a friend in Sulaymaniyah and I’m starting the trip in Karbala)
Hey! Of course there were speed limits but I can't remember what they were. I don't actually recall seeing many signs though. But we generally ride at a fairly slow cruising speed on highways anyway. Yes we carried an IDP but were never asked to see it.
