Riding with Yarn Connecting Reins to Bit

In response to my friend Jeremy Steinberg's recent article in the Chronicle of the Horse, in which he described Dietrich Von Hopffgarten commenting that he was disappointed with the heaviness of modern dressage and that he would love to see some of these riders try to ride for five minutes with yarn connecting the reins and bridle, I conducted this small experiment to tease Jeremy. I rode for 40 minutes on this nine year old FEI mare with yarn intact, and took the clips you see here.

The tail is stuck, not swinging and this is a sign the horse is NOT using his back (as nature intended). It is all rush rush rush, and the harmony is lost. Who trained this rider? Elbows stiff, seat stiff, etc. The horse is lovely though.

He only rode under the classical dressage master Nuno Oliveira... I often find people who are accustomed to watching modern dressage and the types of horses they use find the more baroque breeds to look "rushed." This is working in harmony with the horse's natural way of going as opposed to attempting to manufacture exaggerated gaits.

I'm just starting to use a curb, I'm scared of being too much in my mare's mouth. Might try this.

Not to argue, but I would bet that this mare was trained to more "lightness" than the average FEI competitor, more than many I've seen, anyway. Just sayin'.

He said it was to tease his friend, the author of the article.
