As one of the VFX artists who went completely uncredited on this film -- the one responsible for helping stage the battlefield carnage at Waterloo in the Layout Department -- thank you for making this video! Alan (the layout lead for _Napoleon_ in Montreal) had me create a "melee diorama" of a few dozen soldiers in close-quarters combat, including horses in locomotion and rearing up, dead soldiers, and soldiers engaging in scuffles. From what Alan told me after I left (my contract ran up), the supervisors loved it! Again, thanks for making this vid!

To me, this whole VFX is just plain stupid. All the people who say "CGI has ruined films" will point at films like this and say "It's completely practical, no stupid CGI". Where are they now? They've just proved that they can enjoy a film with CGI. So who cares? Let the incredibly hard working VFX teams get recognized for their work!

I can’t believe it’s not VFX! What a great series so far, thank you Hugo

Fun fact - some companies even go as far as having the BTS footage blue screen re-colored to grey tones to further the 'it's entirely practical' narrative. "Top Gun" is another offender, where the die-hard fans will argue until blue in the face that Tom Cruise was, in fact, piloting a jet that.. didn't exist in the real world ("he does all his own stunts!") 😅

I think some people must think Tom Cruise and Miles Teller actually flew an F-14 (a plane with no flying examples left outside of Iran) in a dogfight against an SU-57 (The Russians were kind enough to lend the film-makers one for the production)

Ridley Scott was never much of a dramaturg. He would not know a good from a bad script in a hundred years. But he is still a hell if a great director.

First they promoted films with „Wow! Everything is CG now!“ now they promoting everything with „Wow. It’s all real!“ - i guess what Ridley meant was: only the background is CG. Which in our time means: Wow! It’s still real.

In that interview, Ridley Scott was very pragmatic and candid about the production. He said something like: _"We had 300 actors, because that's the maximum I find feasible. Then the rest is CGI."_ When he was saying _"This is all real."_ I think he was referring to a specific shot, but the editing of the interview made it confusing.
@HugosDesk

Yes I believe that’s what happened. I mentioned that on the podcast. I also think he is referring to AI, that they didn’t use AI.

I completely agree with your sentiments on the film it’s self. It should have been a series. So much was left out.

I think my biggest problem that I have with Ridley Scott movies nowadays is that something about the way he makes his films feels so, "Workman like fashion" I guess? Looking back at his past films especially Alien: Covenant, if you look down on the IMDB trivia for Alien: Covenant, it said that "According to Ridley Scott, principal photography for this movie took place in just 74 days for $111 million. It was finished on budget and on time." Which gave this impression that from Ridley Scott and for a long time that he really works on a weird, "I want to get his done, and only shoot this scene with multiple cameras for one scene, and moving on." I guess that's how the studios like it and that's why he gets work. Because after Napoleon he's already finished with Gladiator 2, and now has 5 projects working on. And Napoleon proves this because if you go on the Trivia on Napoleon, "The film was shot in 61 days. Sir Ridley Scott said that this was remarkably fast for a film of this scale. He credits the speed of the shoot down to being prepared and "not having ridiculous numbers of retakes".

Hi Hugo - that interview with Scott with that youtuber on a history channel, grinds me gears so much. Another youtuber 'the movie rabbit hole' created an excellent video series which detailed all the issues you're talking about too. He has a 4th video in the series coming out soon too - if you haven't seen, I'd highly recommend watching.

Thanks a lot for reviewing Napoleon! I very hope director's cut would improve the impression. And perhaps they would even add the subtitles for the Russian lines. I had to translate them for my friends in the cinema, LOL. "What the idiots! Setting up the camp like this... thought we wouldn't spot them. Let's go report the commander".

Maybe it's because many people spend more time in the virtual world these days, the perception of what reality really is is inverted for many 🤔😂

Even though the movie was pretty average I don't think anything in this video warrants your frustration. It still LEAGUES ahead of most other blockbuster films in terms of practicality. I personally find those LED sets much more jarring and noticeable than anything used in Napoleon.

Yes it’s much better then a blockbuster movie but not a good historical film, not to mention it’s not even a good Ridley Scott movie

I was really looking forward to this film. Sadly after weeks of anticipation I couldn’t make it 30 minutes into the film due to the horrible CGI. Someone should start a YT channel calling out the horrible CGI in films.

The problem with Ridley Scott these days seems to be that he's too tired of fighting with the producers and production companies about the direction the movie is supposed to take and just says "F-ck it" and goes with whatever is thrown at him.

19:00 It's not about his age. It basically has to do with his character evolution. I watched many of the interviews he gave on Napoleon. His arrogance was palpable. He surely wouldn't admit to the fact that he took the pure commercialism route with this film. The film is riddled with tons of unforgivable liberties teetering at the edge of sheer stupidity, so much so that they can not be considered artistic or dramatic choices and/or exaggerations. In the film, Napoleon basically has a sit down with the Duke of Wellington on board a British vessel, are you f**ng kidding me? They never even met. Napoleon only corresponded with Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, but never this. So, why feel the need to squeeze in something like this in there? Opportunity for cool-ass dialogue... Nothing more. But sadly it ends up adding nothing to the story. If one intends on doing a film based on Historic events, they simply don't have the license to rewrite history to they whim, period! And Napoleon has had a really, really big life that just can't be condensed into a 2 hour long diddly. It's downright shameful. Ridley should just retire and be done with it. He already has a slew of cinematic masterpieces he was able to successfully direct and change the course of cinema history. Napoleon is nothing but an old man making a fool out of himself.

How the dude on the left destroyed that godawful movie makes the video, great arguments, great, dark energy. :D On the other hand, sorry, dude on the right, but it sounds like you don't even know why you enjoyed it. ^^; Being clueless about Napoleon, which you obviously are, may be a prerequisite to do so.

20 years' time, this film will be a classic. A forgotten gem. A misunderstood film. A work of art and craft. Nobody understood its importance, and Ridley Scott, as the director, was creating an epic masterpiece for the new age. Big 🥱 😫 😢

The movie is awful but the VFX are very good! That is, in my opinion, the only thing I liked in the film.
