Let's talk about something that seems to be more complex than it should be: rifle slings.

I was HAPPY when someone gave me a 3 point sling; I took it apart and used the hardware and webbing to fix my favourite pack. There's no need to throw out 3 points; you just need to find another use for them.

The opening of the vid is hilarious! I've been using a 3-pt sling on my SBR for years while hunting. I've never had an issue getting tangled up. It holds the rifle stable across my chest, and out of the way while I'm hiking with a climbing stand on my back. If you don't slip the one lop over, it's a standard 2-pt sling.

it's about training and usage, 3 points are great for carry, marching and parades but putting them on quickly in full gear isn't ideal. I always put my helmet on after the slung weapon for that reason.
@enigmakashman3501
@enigmakashman3501 5 лет назад
One thing nobody talks about the 3-point is the weight distribution capability. Try marching 5 miles with 3.5~5 kg rifle with 1-point or 2-point. Your shoulder will kill you. Most of the time the soldier will be carrying not firing his/her weapon.

Our Drill Sergeant in basic had us make our own 3 point slings from a M16 sling, 550 cord, electrical tape, and an Alice rucksack strap. They were fantastic. even with an IBA, LBV-88, and ACH, never really got tangled. The only downside was the time I was being fireman carried and the rifle swung around my back and butt stroked me in the Zygomatic Bone.
@Sacharius
@Sacharius 7 лет назад
I have to leave a dissenting opinion: I've had a mostly excellent experience with the Finnish Defence Force 3-point sling. Sure, you COULD get all tangled in that, but that usually means that either the person is inexperienced in using the sling (in which stage it happens continuously, I admit) or is carrying other things with slings etc, like a backpack accidentally on top of the gun sling. But otherwise I found it extremely useful during my conscript service. You can ask the guys at Varusteleka for their opinions on that sling :D

Now..... I will preface what I'm about to say with this. I have since replaced almost all of my slings with quick adjust 2 point slings, save for my M1Garand and M1A and my scout rifle "which wears a ching sling". I deployed 3 times to Iraq and for all 3 years spent over there I had the same SpecOps 3 point sling and never had an issue with it being difficult or snagging on any of my gear in or out of the truck or my Bradley, I will add that I had to modify it slightly because I am left handed, but never an issue otherwise. It even had a quick disconnect that would drop the rifle free with one clasp. Having said that the quick adjust 2 point offers so much more in versatility that it's the only real answer. But as far as the issues you mention about the 3 point sling. I didn't persoanly see it in 3 years of combat

Great video! I was issued a 2 point cheapie in the Army. Now that I'm out I tried using a high speed 2 point adjustable. I got the bulky one with qd points that turns into a single point if needed. It hasn't left my gun safe since the first time i used it. The video with the guy fumbling around with the 3 point was hilarious. Followup video was great too. Ian's demonstration had me thinking how the three point would have got all jacked on my FLC or TAP. Thank you

Oh that video of that operator with his 3 point sling, reminds me how I handled mine the first time in the Dutch army. I do prefer a 3 point to a 2 point however for long marches: the gun is closer to your body and slams around less so i'ts better for movement in my opinion.

exactly. it takes quite a lot of time to master. its not simple. nor is attaching the sling to the weapon. but get it right and stick with it, it shows its benefits in my opinion. but its not ideal for all shooting situations.

Karl, I use that same Viking sling. Works great. It makes a perfect sling for an LMG as well since it extends nice and long but also zips the gun up tight against you when you're humping it along. One thing I want to say, for the transition to the back what I do is simply grab your buttstock at your shoulder, yank it straight out forward away from you and then down to your hip, and the muzzle will get automatically pulled up your back. Very quick, VERY smooth. Try it! Easier than reaching back over your shoulder, especially with lots of kit on.

So funny listening to your 3-point sling advice. I heartily agree. Was issued one for Riverine use and gave it back. Opted for a single point. Riding in a boat semi-standing is where that single point sling shines. Gives you both hands to hold on and manipulate radios, and other equipment.

During my conscription in finland, we had simple leather slings, mainly 2 point and that was where the doctrine went, but I have to say the MP where allowed to have it as a single point sling simply attaching one end of the loop to the other end or directly to strap. This was a much more convenient way to have the rifle in long time carry when standing guard or patrolling. I remember the joy when it was permitted to move to the 1 point style. Of course as a conscript there were never any real dynamic situations where you need that gun off your body right now

@Surv1ve_Thrive
@Surv1ve_Thrive 8 лет назад
I agree. the 3 point with SA80 works well even with webbing etc. it takes time and the threat of shouting to get it right but it works I think. being able to slacken it quickly is great as is being able to quickly tighten it before reaching over etc to stop the weapon moving about. pretty cool really. I would imagine there is a weight limit for the 3 point. so no good for LMGs etc. too heavy.

The one system I used while in the Army is a break point to point "Sling", namely Spec-ops Brand Wolf Hook. I found that when mounted to my body armor and M-16 rear stock point it worked great for me. I could move it behind me or leave it in front when I needed both hands. It also served to keep the rifle snug in my shoulder when shooting.

Put on all your gear. Especially a helmet. Quickly adjustable is very nice. It's all about what works for you. I ended up with a single point, rat-tail from the drag handle then over the shoulder with a quick release, and a second quick release with a quick slide off of my lower left ammo pouch. Worked for me. Quick pointing with the rat-tail, no rope burns on my neck, stayed in place and out of the dirt with the second clip, didn't go flying when I took a tumble, easy detach, no spaghetti ball nightmare, and no getting hung up on my own gear. Just 2 clips on the weapon and no rattle. But then I always was a geardio.

How would you classify the M1907 style sling? An early form of (relatively) quick-adjust? It's what happened to be with the second (third? fiftieth?)-hand .22 rifle I inherited, so I took the time to learn how to use it... and it's a real pain! I keep meaning to replace it with something else, but I get to shoot so infrequently I never get around to it.

I like the two point quick adjust slings. Another thing I like to do is have my two point set up to where I can quickly set it to a single point in the event I need it. It's worked for me so far and I have yet to have it fail me. I mostly use it as a two point but I love having the option to go single. Just adds a little more flexibility and I haven't had any issues with snags and tangles like the three points.

I was in a foreign army a long time ago and we weren't allowed to use our slings, which stayed rolled up in our webbing...........had to have them, but could only spend 5 minutes threading the flipping thing onto our Augs then actually use it when about to carry a stretcher, or a Gerry can in each hand.Karl, watching you get all tactical and multi -purpose with that 2-point fixed sling was an eye-opener. I recently got a 3 point sling for my SA80 for airsoft, I have to say it was the worst sling, not only is it at times confusing to put on in the heat of a game where you have to think fast, but it SNAGS on everything and gets caught on your tactical vest almost every time, it even knocked my radio out of it's pouch. Luckily my one could be changed back to a two point sling which is what I will use from now on only! Simple kit is essential for any kind of tactical situation. The simpler the more reliable and the faster you can respond to your opponent

When I was in cadets we had this sling that was a 2 point sling with a clip on it, so when we were patrolling it was at a comfortable position, but then on contact drills you could instantly unclip a point of the sling which made it essentially loose on the gun end so you can use it but still firm on the body so the sling still held on tight. Essentially, a 2 point sling which turned into a 1 point sling but which always had 2 points of contact on the rifle.

Great video. Wish I'd seen this years ago before learning it the hard way. I still have a few 3 point slings in a box. Haven't used any of them in years, but when I was a teenager they were cool and tactical so I bought several. After trying to actually use them in matches, they all got taken off. I couldn't sell them to someone knowing how bad they are so they just sit in that box. I do like the single point slings as long as they have a quick detach, but yeah they aren't great for stages with a lot of running around, unless you fancy taking an rifle to the balls on a regular basis. Overall though, I generally just stick with the old classic military style single adjustable 2 point.

Interesting you used footage with an AUG when illustrating the shortcomings of a 3-point sling, as the Giles Sling (which helped kick 3-point slings popularity into the 90s) was originally designed around the AUG. For me, front hang retention (1-pt & 3-pt) slings work more tolerably with SBR / Bullpup length guns, but at this point I've converted my Giles Slings to 2-pts, relegated my single pts to stocked pistols, and straight up 2-pts for everything else. So, good synopsis and I agree with your conclusions.

A single point sling is much more effective when transitioning to/fighting from atypical stances (ex. laying on back)

Great video! I run a single point to two point adjustable, best of both worlds being able to run bot setups with one sling, to hell with 3 point!

To each his own. I actually prefer 3 point to 2 point as it gives a little space between you and the gun if you are in gear - quite different from typical competition I guess. Made myself simple one that I easily turn to 1 point if I need more maneuverability. It can also work practically like 2-point on back for climbing. It's about working the details so it works for you. That being said, Magpul's MS3 2/1 design is really nice and probably my favorite.

3 point slings are the best if you learn how to use them. Nothing beats long distance travel with one, or doing activities like riding motorcycles, snowmobiling, skiing etc.. Plus they do make quick detach ones ya know

I ran a three point overseas, my job put me in vehicles (Army, not contractor) a lot and I ran a SBR M-14. No, I wasn't super elite, just knew how to work the federal ordering catalogue. 3 point was the only option that worked in the confines because it put the weapon across the chest when in travel. So, there are times and places where they are the best option, but there is a reason there are different types of slings. I also had a type made by a guy who designed it in his garage for those types of situations, so it didn't have the type of layout a lot of 3 point have; Aussies were going to buy it but a certain sling manufacturer realized they were going to lose money and took legal action. I'm not even sure if what I had ended up being made.

Karl can I ask if you've ever had to use an Arctic Sling? I had to use one when I was doing my Arctic Survival and Warfare training back in 1984. I don't if the British one was specific to the L1A1 but it designed so you could have your rifle across your chest when you had your berrgan on your back & where skiing or snow shoeing it cross country. It did have a quick release clip which meant you could shoulder it if you came under fire, if this was lose though it could turn your rifle into a bloody anchor if came off when skiing. When you were moving without your berrgan it could also be slung right between your shoulder blades obviously not if you were expecting the enemy

Try the Proctor 2 point adjustable length, you'll love it IMHO. Plus it's inexpensive and no tail flopping around if that bugs you.

I actually retain my weapon on my shoelaces and have it tactically drag behind me. It gives the illusion that I am more than one person, especially with my Tapco decked out SKS. If I need to use the weapon in an emergency (eg: someone tries to rob Bass Pro) all I need to do is a tactical backflip, catching the gun, then sitting down on the ground to fire. If I have to move, I just use the "SWAT scoot" or sometimes "Doggy scoot" to move myself about. I find that this is the best method of weapon retention.

I love my single point sling. I have a quick attach adapter and put it on every M4 I borrow. I'm a mechanic so I'm constantly setting the rifle down and picking it back up with me, as well as carrying things and crawling under vehicles. The two-point isn't a bad sling, but it gets stuck on my kit and helmet all the time, where I can just unclip the single point. However, yes, the single point does suck while running or carrying heavy things because it just makes the rifle stab your shins or calves while walking if you don't have a hand on it.

After cutting my 3Point Sling, can I keep the QD-Swivel and the HK-Snap-Hook, or should I throw them away with the sling?? ;) Thank you so much for this video. I always thougth I was to stupid to handle a 3Point-Sling propperly. Now I changed all my rifle slings to quick-adjust-2point! Much better!!!!

I use a loose 1-point on my work M4. If I'm running, I'm holding it by the pistol grip and handguard so getting slapped isn't an issue. I can slip it down along my weak side leg to get it out of the way for a pistol transition or other work. I can quickly disconnect it without pulling the sling over my head. And, most importantly for me, I can transition back and forth from strong or weak shoulder to suit my cover options. Can't do that with a 2-point without loosening or tightening it. Agree that 3-points suck. I was forced to use one in the military and they get caught on everything.

I blindly bought a 3-point sling. After giving up figuring out how the hell it could work with a MOLLE vest with pouches and a backpack, I asked the internet... and came up with this video. Excellent advice. In two days, Amazon is bringing me a 2-point. LOL!

Never fooled with a 3-point sling. Thank God. Convertible 1-2 point sling with HK a clips is my goto. I can quickly swap from one to the other, all the benefits based on situation. And btw, doing vehicle operations single points come in very handy. Otherwise, I prefer a two point.

7:10 For that you have to know that our polcie force is in a very bad state when it comes to firearm training. They have 3-4 training days in the year and they fire around 150 shots per year. That is not even half of what you need if you want to have a private gun license because there you need at least 12-20 training days on the range to keep your license. And thats not all, in some states the police cant exercise for one year now, all the police ranges are shut down because of Asbestos in the plates. There were some policeman that got lungcancer and sucessfully sued the state. Berlin has no money so instead of rebuilding the ranges they just stopped training inner state. I dont have to tell you guys in this channel why this is a bad thing. What i think i have to explain is that our police alost never uses their firearms and when they do its always on the edge if it was ok to do so or sometimes it goes straight down the crazy road because they are obviously untrained. Example i can come up with from the top of my head : Last month a Policeman in Hale fired a shot at a fleeing Sprayer, the cop said that he ddidnt wanted to shoot at him, the gun fired itself when he tried to draw it. I guess i dont have to explain to you why a P99 isnt just firing at random. Or there was the case of a turkish vegetable trader which was fighting with his ex-wife over the custody of his daughter. She told the police she got a death thread and the police decided to arrest him with an assault. During this time the Nationsocialistic Underground Terrororgroup was killing eastern looking men and women and the man had a pistol in his glove department for self defene. The police knew this because the Ex wife told them and was prepared to react. When the man sat in his car he saw people with masks and drawn weapons running to his vehicle that started firing as soon as he sat down. He tried to drive away while returning fire and his car was shot 109 times. He didnt came far thogh because his car was stopped and he got arrested. Now first thing is that the police started firing without any reason,secondly they missed the driver behind the steering wheel 109 times and then third off everyone claimed they were being shot at There are more examples that can be brought down to bad training but i guess this will give you a good picture about the general state of affairs, so whe i see a regular op with the full turtle fumbling around with a machinepistol like that i get really afraid.

KieferDragoner The SEK has the same problem, my second example was from a planed SEK mission. An ex roomate and close friend of mine changed to the KriPo because he didnt wanted to take responsibility with the training and decision making they got. Other examples are the raid on Hanebuth, The forced entrance on the wrong home in Göttingen , the use of a helicopter to land on a bridge for a cool foto or while we are at helicopters there were 3 destroyed Helicopters , one SEK while training and 2 while the plice tried to survey football fans in regular season in foggy weather because they both crashed into each other while landing.

stupid question? Is what the sg 1 members use on screen with the p90s is a three point? Seems like a three point would be effective for dress up or whatever.
