Tim was in a horrific car accident years back, thats why his voice is like that. But I met Tim back in 2013 in Virginia, & he is one of the most down to earth ppl Ive had the chance to meet. #DMB
In my opinion Tim Reynolds is one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. I'm a huge DMB fan and Tim just adds soo much to an already dynamic group. What's more is his "less is more" strategy just by using a simple amp rig with some precise pedal usage. Another thing that helps his tone is that he plays extremely loud! When I saw DMB this past summer, during the soundcheck I could hear the guitar tech test his rig out and it was blaring, without even coming through the front of house!
Incredible guitar player. His playing, tone, effects usage and feel on the Radio City stuff is the best I've ever heard on acoustic. I was totally slayed by those cd's and dvd's. I still watch those all the time. Never checked out TR3...will do that now.

When I first started watching Tim in the late 80s , he was playing an Ibanez arch top (Joe Pass model) he had 2 pedals a delay and a distortion, into an old Peavy . That peavy was a 1x12 solid state combo . I dare anyone to go out and play a gig on that setup !! Lol . He had a great sound !! For real , and he killed . I mean some nights watching him it was religious . Great musician !
I'm not a jam band guy. I know a lot of people are...that's totally cool. I finally got on board with DMB when a friend introduced me to Dave and Tim. Seen those guys twice. Also seen TR3 twice. I love TIm. Whatever he's doing just works for me. This video is maybe outdated...but awesome nonetheless. Thank you.
Tim said he was watching a video Paca Delucia playing guitar. That's so crazy because the first time I heard Paca Delucia, I thought wow that sounds a lot like some of Tim's solos with Dave especially on L@LC
This just goes to show that it is not the equipment that makes the player. For all practical purposes, Tim is playing off the shelf production guitars. He almost sounds like he does not even really know what he is playing ... A guy like this could sound good on anything.
Tim's explanation about his voice: "In 1980 I was a in a car accident that severed the nerve to the left vocal chord, so for a while I could barely even talk. So that gives it a rougher sound and I struggle with it sometimes because it gets tired easy, like if I talk all day and sing all night".
Tim is totally the man- his voice makes him sound like he's always holding back a yawn... regardless of how he got that way, it's sort of funny in the end.
Is it just me, or does Tim have the strangest voice I’ve ever heard?! I love him, didn’t even realize for many years that I was emulating his style when I play Dave Matthews stuff, along with some of the things that I do with delay pedal and volume swells, so seriously, I love the dude. But his voice is so strange sounding! Doesn’t sound anything like his face looks like! Anybody else feel the same way?
If I’m not mistaken, Tim’s voice has strange moments because of a bad car accident years back that severed his vocal chords. He could barely even talk for some time.
@mungo6000 And we're talking about rig's and gear here, not playing. There's plenty of 'better' or more skilled guitarists than BJ Armstrong, but he has a tone or sound that works and people know and like.
I'm gonna remove my original comment because I apparently am a moron for making a mistake. I apologize for that, but I didn't expect the negative reaction. I love Tim Reynolds and his playing, and I don't mean to offend anyone because of my comment. Really don't think I was being that much of a dick for it. But, don't wanna upset the public and their easily hurt feelings.
@mungo6000 Sooo is this guy known for his incredible tone and people model their tone or playing after him? Nahh, he's a good player but James Fn' Hetfield has godly tone and people recognize his signature bite right away. Hetfields rig is extremely technical, whereas BJ Armrstrongs rig is pretty straight forward but it's very custom at the same time. People know the dookie guitar sound right away as well. it's a moded marshall plexi.
I know that now, and I apologize for my comment. But, I don't see how that makes me a dick for making the comment. Seems like the tables have turned on you, O! Canada, eh?
