I saw Vince play back in '94. Absolutely great. He's a super nice down to earth guy. A few years back he played at my local winery. The night before the show, a couple winery employees were out setting up cones in the parking lot. Vince steps out of his bus and asked if he could help set cones 'cause he was bored and it looked like fun. So they all had fun setting up cones. That's so cool. Little things like that make a lasting impression on people.

That white telecaster is iconic to Vince Gill, he plays it ALL THE TIME it is 100% the guitar I associate with him. That's so cool that it's an authentic 53' Telecaster, he bought it before he was famous for a great price back home, he doesn't just let it collect dust he plays it so often it has had to be re-fretted dozens of times, and it's still his number 1 all these years later. I love that.

Love to hear Paul & Vince play with the Time Jumpers. I didn't hear Vince mention when he had the home studio done. If it was before 2014, Dawn Sears would have had Vince replacing some his windows, they all played well together. One thing I've learned is if you're going to kid or joke around with Vince, you'd better be quick on your feet, cuz he'll fire them right back and he'll have you rollin with laughter.

He is iconic! The modesty is great but he just adapts so well with anyone. Paul Franklin has no match. Noone has the knowledge of his instrument as we)like as he. I love his connection to past steel players
@Melvvynfirmager

Trevor Oliver. I had to laugh, mainly at myself, as I had never heard of a steel player call Noone!! Then it came to me, just before i went to Google search!! But, you have got me completely with 'as we)like as he'. Perhaps it is a 'secret code!?! It matters not, but thought you might be amused. Seriously though, whilst we all have personal favourites, and i would would put Emmons first and Franklin a very very close second. I personally think Emmons is (was) the most knowedgable - especially his development of the C6 copedent, in around a week. that really does take some beating. Would you not agree? For me Emmons understated and smooth delivery, has not been surpassed. And Franklin's playing the break on the You Tube live recordings of Together again with Vince Gill, is truly sublime. Especially the one where Paul puts his hand on his heart, as a thank you the audience. I listen to that at least once a week, sometimes several times! I will be interested to hear your thoughts

rodaho54 o come on buddy, its not that bad!!...LOL! im a steel player and have been blessed to have been coached by some of the instruments' true masters. the fundamentals are kinda difficult but once you understand about string/pick blocking, bar placement and how the pedals on your guitar work. then the rest is just basically playing by ear and messing around with it. aomw of the best and iconic intros were done by pure accident and experiment. most 6 stringers are dicks because they keep alot of their stuff to themselves and won't show nothing to nobody. steel players aren't like that for the most part. they're happy to show you exactly how they did a particular intro, lick or whatever. a great example, my favorite intro is on the vern gosdin song "set em up joe" the man who did it in the studio is jim vest. he is a wonderful human being. i had the high and middle parts down pat but the low end was kicking my ass. when i played it for him he chuckled and said i sounded great but i was missing the crucial part. without hesitation he showed me what to do and after i ran through it about 3 times i had it down! i played it at a show and people said later that it sounded just like the recording!! made me feel incredibly humble

Oh man - this is 8 years later but I *just* saw this. Will Owsley was my childhood guitar teacher at 13, in Anniston, AL. We stayed in loose touch and on and off intersected all the way from his move to Nashville, the Peter Asher era, etc etc, then throughout his Amy / Shania days, and lastly maybe a year before his death. I've heard Vince say some lovely things about Will in print before, but this means so much to me - to hear and see him with that guitar, and what it means to him. because of a guy who meant so much to a lot of people - basically everyone who knew him. He always said Amy and Vince were just about the best people he'd ever met, and it rings true to me for sure. Thanks for this.

Not only a genius player but a totally nice guy, Had the pleasure of meeting him in Uk in 90;s at Gerry Hogans; festival, he played on stage with four other steel players but when he cut loose they all just watched and marvelled at him, just as the charlie Daniels song says , he's the best theres ever been' on whats undoubtably the hardest instrument to master .

I could take so much more pedal steel. I'm so impressed by the complexity and emotion you can get out of the pedal steel. They always make me feel like a lazy, inadequate musician whenever I listen to one and I'm not much of a country fan at all.
@MrUltraworld
@MrUltraworld 11 лет назад
About 25 yrs ago, I worked under a steel guitar Luthier. You cannot believe how complex they are. The tuning will give you fits. The pedals & knee pads have to be in perfect tuning when they are engaged. And these guys have dog hearing. A good steel player needs to be really sharp. But what a sound.
