Rigging a Secondary Lead: 3 Options

Simple concept for rigging when on a secondary lead. To finish it off you can either:
1) Swing the top back to the main
2) Redirect and rig off the secondary
3) Span rig off the secondary
** VERY IMPORTANT - It is never a good idea to dump big weights into a tensioned line. In this video I am showing small loads, and we are trying to let the line run when the weight comes into it. Shock loading spars hard sideways is a recipe for disaster. Please be aware of the forces involved and use good judgement in your rigging. - Patrick **
Hope this makes sense and gets you thinking about options. I show it here with an omni-block but this can also be done with an x-ring.

When I started my tree work adventure dealing with a dead tree in my yard, I sought out every tree company to learn from, no one was hiring or wanted to bring me on, so I went to youtube and found several channels to learn from, one being yours and learned the right way to do things while climbing, cutting, rigging and felling, and just carefully watched and practiced what you showed going slow and low, I have climbed for 4 different companies now and at the white house. Thank you Brother.

You mentioned this dead tree , there are not enough options when it comes to dead trees . even though they look like they’re OK .there has been too many times when rigging points don’t hold ! and having a secondary anchor point was for me was necessary . most new or unexperienced tree workers , don’t understand that . When having multiple options and multiple rigging points , due to the risk of failure .property damage for my opinion is not an option .. when it comes to our industry. Excellent video Tree muggs

Enjoyed the video. Three good options. My pick would be #2....negative rig. Looked like the span rig allowed the top to come pretty close to he fence below. Good job cutting and nice rope work.

Such a great angle ! for the camera .. golly ! I haven’t done rigging like this in so many years. What a refreshing reminder of the options.. we hold as a Arborist , when making cuts, and you need to have them move a little away or towards your target area. . Most excellent .. 👍🏼💯

These are the time saving tricks that a climber picks up by using redirects & false crotch rigging often. These are my favorite things about the new rigging setups

Your channel is at the top of tree pedagogy for me. My question is why would you want the omniblock sling at full length? I always find myself choking the hardware up as close as possible to the anchor wood, not for a particular reason but preference. Thanks

I prefer it longer on a span rig, allows it to move more naturally I find. If it was tight it would deflect the rope a lot more, or keep things closer to the cut... - Patrick

Hey Patrick, At time marker 6m13s, it looks like you're rocking a natural fiber homemade 3 strand chainsaw lanyard... Looks very nice, and also it got me wondering whether it was purposed designed around the low breaking strength of natural fiber to be "break-away"? Keep up the great work, and thank you for everything I have learned from your videos since starting in the trees in late 2017.

Hey MUGGS. So i think you have 2 life lines going up, (a rope wrench, hitch climber pulley and a prussic) thats all i use and am familiar with. and a mechanical one. They both attach to your ring on the bridge. But there looks like 2 little rings or swivels on that? Any info on that attachment point. Rookie climber here, thanks man. Appreciate your teachings.

On my bridge is a Camp Gyro Swivel. It is a 3 way swivel which I like for managing dual systems, works well. All the best. - Patrick

What a great demonstration. The cool thing about span rigging is the way the load is shared so the crew have a 2:1 mechanical advantage. It requires less effort but needs twice the spare line to lower it all the way to ground. And of course there's a possible intense spike in line tension on the two anchors if for some reason the line gets hung up while the span line is horizontal and taut. So although negative rigging is best done with a short freefall, you don't want it so short as to put huge sideways tension on the two anchors. What a lot to think about when up in a tree, ha ha.
