Indigenous desert rangers and Traditional Owners managing their country draw on a long tradition of burning expertise when doing right way fire work. The IDA's Right Way Fire program respects Indigenous knowledge and shares cultural and contemporary knowledge in the right way. Traditional Owners and rangers spend upwards of six months planning and training in preparation for the short season of cool conditions when it is safest to burn desert country.
Indigenous Protected Areas across the Australian desert can be extremely remote. There is often no or very limited road access. So rangers work from the sky - and, where possible, the ground. The IDA's Right Way Fire program uses helicopters and incendiaries [fire starting devices] in combination with fine-scale ground burning using drip torches around sensitive areas.
Join rangers and staff from Newhaven, Ngalurrtju, Kiwirrkurra and Yuendumu completing training in Incendiary Machine Operation (IMO) and Introduction to Prescribed burning at Newhaven Sanctuary.
