Matt, I loved your reaction to Bobby Hatfield. I was 23 when he sang this on The Andy Williams Show. Every woman who heard him fell in love with him that night. Just pure talent. No auto tune, dancers, fog machines, flashing lights, techno crap. He stood and delivered. Magnificent! 🤗

I was born in 1960, and can still remember this music back then (I had older siblings that had the radio on all the time). Bobby Hatfield would be a star if he were a young man today. His voice was amazing, along with his stage presence...and the fact that he still melts the heart of young women that watch this video today (I've seen dozens of women reacting to his 1965 live video).

Thank you for that genuinely reaction! (Unlike others who constantly look at themselves in self admiration instead of actually truly listening to the song.) Your true facial expression says it all. You can tell that you actually felt something deep inside. Bobby Hatfield had an amazing soulful voice and showed his feelings throughout all of his songs. He is truly missed.

It's utterly HYSTERICAL watching the young generation's REACTION as they finally getting exposed to the TRUE PURE TALENT we (Age 66) enjoyed during our formative years. There are many versions of this beautiful expression of love, but NONE are or can be better than Bobby Hatfield's version here....RIP

That was from the Andy Williams valentines day show. Bill Medley is there, he just didn't sing with Bobby because he didn't think it would be a hit considering the artists that sang it before him. Bobby was nervous because his parents were sitting in the audience, yet he never showed it.. My mother was sitting next to Bobby's mother 🥰

Yup, Speechless. This kind of singing (REAL talent, no autotune) can totally render a person speechless. I really enjoyed you looking up during at least 2 of Bobby's higher notes. It was as if checking to air to watch them floating up to the clouds. You may have temporarily lost the words, but the thoughts were all over your expressions. The singers back then could sing for real. But Bobby Hatfield (the "Brother" in this video) and the other man in the duo Bill Medley (very deep voice, baritone) were in a class all their own.

This performance done back in (1965) is considered one of the greatest live performances in television history. I have never heard composers 'Alex North' 'Unchained Melody' done so beautifully and masterfully by the 'Andy Williams Orchestra.' This arrangement of this beautiful ballad has the strings section prominent in this the greatest rendition of this song I have ever heard. The violins were kicking it in this masterpiece...Then you add one of the greatest 'Tenors' in Bobby Hatfield' and together they created what I consider the greatest version of 'Unchained Melody' ever!!! This performance alone has cemented 'Bobby Hatfield's' legacy as one of the greatest 'Tenors' in music history...May he rest in peace.

I am 81 and remember quite a few singers doing this but Bobby's tops them all. I was heading to Viet Nam when his version can out. I can feel the loneliness in every word. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do Unchained, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

This song takes on more meaning when understood in context...the song comes from a prison movie about a man doing time and singing to his love from prison...In 1954, Alex North was contracted to compose the score for the prison film (released in 1955).... North then asked Hy Zaret to write the lyrics, but Zaret initially declined, saying he was too busy painting his house. North was able to convince him to take the job, and together they wrote "Unchained Melody."...and the rest is history...maybe the most beautifully written romantic song of all time...and as I understand Zaret did eventually get his house painted

Hey Matt, my reaction is ditto, literally the same as the previous reaction from Barbara (hi Barbara)! I, too, was a 17 year old girl slow dancing to this with my boyfriend. Over these many years I've had a dozen more boyfriends, lovers, and three husband's (still with the third), but in many ways it's never gotten better than that dance, that song. Unchained Melody, by the one and only Bobby Hatfield, casts a spell that's a gorgeous experience if you're open to it. Thank you for your open and genuine reaction.

I to sang this to my wife at our wedding in 1983, as we danced to it with our oldest (but at the time 18 months) child. She, however she said I murdered it. I'm guessing it's not a song for a baritone, she told me I was of better sticking to my drumming. I thought it was an appropriate song as I was in the Royal Marine Commandos, I had returned from the war for the Falkland Islands when I proposed, and now was shipping out to Sierra Leone two days later, so much for my attempt at being romantic. On the upside she liked me in my Dress Uniform, and having my comrades forming the sword tunnel helped. I must have done something write because we're still together and she still puts up with my singing. With 4 children and 7 grandchildren, we got busy on 3 of our baby's when I was home, we adopted the young afghan woman and her 2 daughters at the end of 2015 after they saved my life in Afghanistan (a story for another time), and we are so much better for having them, we love all our family and that is our strength. I served my Queen and Country for 34 years in the Royal Marine Commandos and later in the British Special Forces, and then 2 years in hospital, and she stuck by me even though I'm mainly wheelchair bound now. We do actually have a song by Queen called "Your Me Best Friend", a very apt song as she has been my best friend since we were both 15.

Written by Alex North and Hy Zaret for the 1955 prison movie "Unchained" and originally sung for the movie by black opera singer Todd Duncan. When The Righteous Brothers wanted to record this, both Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley both wanted to sing it solo,so they tossed a coin, and Bobby won. This song is originally from a movie about a guy in prison, who is missing his wife and family. After this came out a lot of guys in Nam were telling their ladies to listen to Bobby Hatfield, because he was saying exactly what they were all feeling. He was 25 here, and his parents were there to hear him sing professionally, the first time they had got there to hear him do so.

The "other guy" was likely either standing offstage or sitting in the green room of the _Andy Williams Show._ They did sing together during that episode, and IIRC they did a third song including Andy, who was also a singer. This live version is superior to the studio version. Among the differences was the length of the extended run, the one that forced you to exclaim, "What the?!" 🙀 I don't know if you noticed his little self-satisfied half-smile/lip-byte at the end. That shot should be a poster with the meme, "Nailed it!"

Bobby Hatfield and Bill medley were a duo in the 1960''s (not blood brothers) Bobby did "Unchained Melody" as a solo, that's Bill Medley on piano, who also arranged the song. During this live performance on The Andy Williams Show, Bobby had a cold, and was nervous, as his parents were in the audience, and yet, judging from the look on his face, he knew he nailed it! Name "Righteous Brothers" came from a performance at a marine base when someone shouted out, "that was righteous brothers," and so, they adopted the name "Righteous Brothers"

This superb singer is Bobby Hatfield. Obviously, he is singing with no help from autotune, reverb, or anything else. He just took the mic, and sang a difficult song perfectly, and in one continuous take. He is the embodiment of Blue Eyed Soul. (And if you have a nagging feeling that there is still some other aspect of this....let me suggest this. He sings this very difficult song without apparent effort or strain. He literally makes it look easy.)
