The reason this live version is so much better was because when he started to rehearse with the orchestra he realized how great the accoustics were in that studio. He told them he wanted to make some changes. You heard the differences for yourself. I think that lip bite and smile at the end was because he was right. It turned out exactly the way he wanted it to sound. Plus his mom was there to watch him do a live performance for the first time.

Knowing his vocal range and breath control he wanted to take full advantage of the acoustics and he nailed it. This is considered one of the very best live recordings of all time.

The Righteous Brothers had appeared regularly on “Shindig,” which started in 1964, a year before this. It was shot on the same set, so he would have known the acoustics. I’m not really disputing your story, but if he did suggest making some changes, it was probably because he knew the hall already and knew what would work. He certainly sang the hell out of it. Those sustained vibratos and high notes really pop.

Welcome to my generation and the music we adored. You asked about other artists or groups from that era. Check out a quartet THE VOGUES! Please check out any of the following: TURN AROUND LOOK AT ME, MY SPECIAL ANGEL EARTH ANGEL TILL These are some of their fabulous recordings but research them and sample the.DoWop tracks from their early recording days and just randomly see and hear how versatile these four men were musically. As for Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley, whether solo or as a duet, they were super stars but down to earth. They loved entertaining as is so obvious. Good luck with you RU-vid channel!

I sang this to my wife at our wedding in 1983. She, however she said I murdered it. I'm guessing it's not a song for a baritone, she told me I was of better sticking to my drumming. I thought it was an appropriate song as I was in the Royal Marine Commandos, I had returned from the war for the Falkland Islands when I proposed, and now was shipping out to Sierra Leone two days later, so much for my attempt at being romantic. On the upside she liked me in my Dress Uniform, and having my comrades forming the sword tunnel helped. I must have done something write because we're still together and she still puts up with my singing. With 4 children and 7 grandchildren, we got busy on 3 of our baby's when I was home, we adopted the young afghan woman and her 2 daughters at the end of 2015 after they saved my life in Afghanistan (a story for another time), and we are so much better for having them, we love all our family and that is our strength. I served my Queen and Country for 34 years in the Royal Marine Commandos and later in the British Special Forces, and then 2 years in hospital, and she stuck by me even though I'm mainly wheelchair bound now. We do actually have a song by Queen called "Your Me Best Friend", a very apt song as she has been my best friend since we were both 15.

This is one of those moments that will live on in memoriam. This epic live performance of composer's Alex Norths [1955] 'Unchained Melody' done back in (1965) on the 'Andy Williams Show.' Provides us with how great the 'Andy Williams Orchestra' was. The arrangement of having the strings (violins and Cellos) section prominent in this version gave for what I consider the greatest rendition of this beautiful ballad I have ever heard. The violins were kicking it in this version...And then you add one of the greatest tenors in rock and roll history in 'Bobby Hatfield.' And together they have created one of the greatest live performances in television history. This performance alone cemented Bobby Hatfield's legacy as one of the greatest tenors in music history. What you just witness was greatness! May he rest in peace.

The song was written for a 1955 movie titled "Unchained". It's about a prisoner hoping his love was waiting for him. Bobby Hatfield had serious stage nervousness especially that night since his parents were in the audience. The little lip bite and grin at the end was him knowing he nailed it. When the song is played in movies, (Ghost and Top Gun both, I believe), were from the studio recorded version. This live performance was one of the few times any live performance has so completely surpassed the taped rendition.

He could sing anything--in addition to the other suggestions here, you'll enjoy listening to him sing "Something's Got a Hold on Me" (wailing blues), both Bobby & Bill belting out soulfully: "Try To Find Another Man" (original), "Turn on Your Love Light," "Island in the Sun," "Harlem Shuffle," more blues duets like "Crying Blues" and "The Blues" (originals) and other Bobby solos that improve on the original versions: Great Pretender, Only You, Ebb Tide, Come Rain Or Come Shine, etc., etc., etc.

The last note in that song was probably a C6.The days where a single voice, performed live without the "showboating" could mesmerize an audience like Bobby could are gone. He's missed.

Grew up with the Righteous Brothers in the early 60s. Use to see then all the time growing up in Pomona Ca when they were first starting out. Two songs that where big for them in the early days that nobody talks about were "My Babe" & "Little Latin Lupe Lu"

Yes, this song featured in “Ghost”, and another Righteous Brothers song, “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”, was featured in Top Gun.

Duke Ellington talked about music back in his day. He in essence assigned blame for what happened to MUSIC. He referred to producers and record label executives who were always looking for what they felt could be popular. Ellington said when the talk was about popularity, what they really meant was money, not music. I think this live performance, captured forever on video tape, proves Duke's point!

Great reaction to one of my favorite songs ever. Besides those already mentioned, I suggest the Righteous Brothers "I Just Wanna Make Love to You," "Just Once in My Life," and the live performances of "Summertime" (another Bobby solo) and "Bring It on Home to Me."

On live TV in front of a TV studio audience (including his mother, apparently). One man, One mike, No studio, One take, BAM! Beautiful. Surely close to perfect.

That's exactly what I thought "is that even possible". Voice of an angel. Could be the best live performance ever by a solo male vocalist, the purity of his voice and he was in total control all the way through. Puts a lot of today's music to shame ... so much of today's music sounds manufactured whereas this was completely genuine, straight form the heart.

This song was written in the 1950s, and was the theme song to a little known film called "Unchained". It is sung from the perspective of a man who goes to prison, and throughout all those years in prison, he thinks of his lover on the outside, and the time when they will be together again.

I believe Bobby's version is the only one to chart at number 1. You should checkout the live '64 video of You've Lost That Lovin Feeling, (Your my) Soul & Inspiration also. On the same program that this song was preformed they preformed a fun song with the shows host Andy Williams called What'd I Say.

Hi there Chad L. Summers. I hope this finds you Well and reasonably Happy. That being said... Isn't this just Amazing?! Somehow the Angels and Dreams got together, all at once & at the same time for this performance to unfold. Thank God that we had the technology available, at that time, to record this in such a way that we are able to enjoy it and be a part of it today! I recently read that this song, "Unchained Melody." has been covered by more than 607 different artists throughout the years and while that is pretty amazing by itself, what surpasses that is the fact that the only version that anyone ever hears, is this one! This Song and Bobby Hatfield were made for eachother. I still get emotional, every time i see and/or hear this. I, of course, have to stuff those emotions down, so it can't be seen, but it's not always easy. Thank you for sharing this with the reast of us. Don't ever doubt if you are appreciated, because you certainly are. Take care and... Keep Smiling... Cheers...

Great singers can usually sing one octave, but a musician recently said that Bobby’s range is 1-1/2 octaves, and he demonstrated others. He leaves me breathless when I hear him sing this song.

How much devotion and effort went into making your video so wonderful and beautiful, it moved me like this. Even if many years pass and everything changes without a trace, I hope that your wonderful and wonderful video will never be forgotten. Thank you to the universe-like algorithm that made it possible to watch a good video at this time. The autumn wind blows softly and a blue landscape is seen by the window today, giving a heart-fluttering feeling. I comfortably watched your videos on my small phone while holding a guitar in my arms and drinking a hot Americano while looking out the window. The scent of your video still lingers in the early morning cafe window while I am watching your video, so I play the guitar and play the harmonica. I would like to say to you that it is a very strangely attractive quality where you can clearly feel the colors of your video. Thank you for making it such a happy time. From the time when you accidentally led me into the video you made on the night when the morning mist was blue... Your video gave me only one great happiness. Your video stories on my phone right now are so dreamy and give me great joy. I am amazed at the excellence of your skills and thank you for taking the time to warm my heart and make me feel comfortable with your sincerity and hard work in watching the video.

You are right about the music being filled with feeling and they really put there hearts into the songs. You don't see it that much today unless it country music and that just isn't the same anymore either. Bobby Hatfield had a world of talent. His voice was so pure and effortless that it just flowed out and there was no strain to sing and hold the notes. They sang from the heart and you could tell that. Bill Medley was the same. They were an amazing duo and there will never be another like them. There version of Unchained Melody will never be done better.

In the months that have passed since you first reacted to this song, and Bobby's performance, have you heard any song or any artist to equal Bobby? I think not. because there isn't. This man raised the bar for every performer, and none of them could get over that bar.
