This is a genuine live performance. He sang this live in front of a live band. He keeps you mesmerized with no background dancers, no stage antics, no stage lights synced up to the dynamics of the music; just a soulful crooner with total command of his vocal cords. At the end when he smiles and bites his lip, he knows that he's taking everyone in that audience for a ride and that all of us wish that it wasn't over.

Thanks for allowing us to appreciate your reactions without interruptions (as so many reaction videos do, and ruin the mood of the song). The lyrics about time going slowly for the man in prison and is expressing his anxiety that time has changed his wife's love for him and that it might have has faded, which is why the next line is "are you still mine." It is also why "lonely rivers sigh, wait for me wait for me." The Righteous Brothers were a duet and not brothers and this song was done as a solo.

Though not biological brothers this was a LIVE solo performance by just one of the duo (Bobby Hatfield) being performed on The Andy Williams TV show. My favorite song from the '60's is by the same group called "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" in which both "brothers" sing...and just by coincidence "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" was the MOST played song on American radio and Tv in the 20th century with over 8 Million plays!!

It was featured in the movie, "Ghost". Bobby had severe stage fright which had to have been worse as his parents were there during this Andy Williams show performance. Bobby had a *four octave range* . What you seeing her is complete CONTROL in his singing. He didn't have to *strain* his high notes. No strain or look like he's even trying. Bobby is 25 in this performance live on the Andy Williams show. Why no clapping or vocalizations during the song? In these shows (check out The Animals on the Ed Sullivan show) they politely ask the audience to *not* do this. Ever really want to hear a performance and you just really wish the audience would just shut up! I think that last sweet smile where he bites his lower lip meant he knew that he damn *KILLED IT* . Also Bobby is so damn fine! That outfit is just pure swank without being gaudy. Diamond pinkie ring without being outrageously gaudy big. Their song "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" holds the record as most song plays ever on the radio. If you REALLY want to listen to a true blue eyed soul listen to "I Just Want to Make Love With You". The ladies listen and get blushed.

Jay, have you ever heard a song on the radio that you really liked but didn't know the song title? You try to describe the song to others so you can find it, but no one knows what you're talking about. Then, years later, you finally find the song and it feels so satisfying. The Righteous Brothers are a duo who are really not related to each other as brothers. In the 1960's just about everyone bought their vinyl 45 RPM singles or their albums because they were so popular. Their music is wonderful to listen to with meaningful words of love. At parties, we would slow dance to these songs and sometimes fall in love. Unchained Melody was always played at least twice and usually the final song of the night. Still to this day when the older generation from that time go to parties their songs are pretty much always played. We love the Righteous Brothers!

This singer, Bobby Hatfield, was one member of a duo (the other guy was Bill Medley). This clip is from a TV show on which they both performed, but Hatfield did this one solo (he had made a hit recording with it.) Some clips on RU-vid shows the introduction with the host. Andy Williams, explaining all that. I've read comments that say the Righteous Brothers got their name when performing at a venue near a Marine base and a Marine in the audience yelled "that was righteous, brothers".)

I appreciate very much the fact that you admitted that you don’t know musical theory (neither do I), yet you gave an honest, heartfelt evaluation of the song and an emotional reaction to it. I’m an old person and enjoy seeing a young person be moved by a song of my era. When lyrics are meaningful, the melody is lovely and the performer sings beautifully, as Bobby Hatfield did, the song transcends time. You had a great reaction to this wonderful song.

Part of what you're hearing as a difference between older music and today's, is that singers now are chosen for their looks more than anything else. Back then, looks certainly helped, but talent was the bigger criteria. Generally, modern acts cannot duplicate onstage what they do in the studio without relying on the same studio trickery and autotune propping them up. Older acts honed their skills with years of performing live and working hard to hone their craft. If you didn't sound good to begin with you weren't offered the chance to record. Plus, there were so many others trying to make their own names that competition was fierce to make it to the top. It's very expensive for a record label to record a new act and then spend, literally, millions of dollars promoting them. For this reason, they stick with the same singers we've been hearing for years. Back in previous decades, there was always a new sound coming up so record labels had to pay close attention to what was new and exciting. It doesn't mean that modern singers are necessarily bad, they just don't have to be as good. In addition, what you hear in this performance are real instruments - also something missing in most modern recordings. Computer generated sounds are fine, but they cannot reproduce the same 'feeling' that a real instrument brings to our ears. There's one more aspect that is incredibly important. Almost all of the older acts were raised on a wide variety of styles and all of these could be heard in their music. Early Rock 'n' Roll was a blend of Blues, R&B/Jump Blues and Country Swing. When The Beatles arrived, they added Folk chords to the mix. The British bands that had embraced Blues as their root sound gave recognition to the original black Blues artists and gave newer groups the thought to add the style to their own music. Bands such as The Zombies added Jazz and Classical roots. Surf music was a mix of western guitar instrumentals blended with Spanish and Middle Eastern sounds. Each new style gave inspiration to others to follow and adapt their own stamp to the blending. With modern music, most artists have grown up being exposed to only one or two styles and that's all they know. It becomes very limiting, very quickly. This is why most music from 20 years ago sounds much the same as music released now. There's nothing to make them try something new to compete with another new sound.

Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher counter tenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song. In 2003, Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63. *The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side. * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and he left. He said, 'No, I can do it better.' And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song." * This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof."

The song was written for a 1955 movie called Unchained, about a guy in prison who couldn’t wait to get back to his girl. The guy who wrote the lyrics refused to put any of that stuff into the song so it became a general love song, sung by many before the Righteous Brothers did it .. but nobody else did it like this, altho many other singers covered the song later (including Elvis) and based their versions of it on this version by The Righteous Brothers ... It is a solo song, but the Righteous Brothers were a duo so they flipped a coin to see who was going to do it, and Bobby Hatfield won. The other member of the duo was Bill Medley who arranged the music for the studio version as well as for this performance AND he played piano while Bobby was singing .. so it was still a team effort. Bobby sang another version for the movie “Ghost “ and this revived interest in the 1965 version (this one) which was then re-released. The Righteous Brothers and this song made history by having two different versions of the same song in the Top20 of the charts at the same time, competing against each other!

There is a reason that you think that the music from those times was more emotional, sung more with feeling, and with excellence of performance. Much of that is because time has filtered out much of the crappy music from those eras and then music like this, a truly amazing performance sung by an extremely talented, trained, and practiced performer is still being played today. I am in my mid-70s now and I remember those songs that we all thought were wonderful back then, and they were wonderful. Then when I go through some of my old music I hear stuff that was not memorable, not wonderful, and mostly forgotten, and that's when I realize what time has done for us, it has saved the best and let the rest slip away. Thank you for playing this song and for introducing it to many in your audience who have never heard it before. I hope that your generation will produce some good music that will still be played 50 or 60 years from now.

Bobby Hatfield has been melting girl's hearts for over 50 years with this song. Music back then was more about touching the heart than today's music.

It was a duo. Not brothers, but in the "black" clubs, they thought that these guys were African American and would say "Play them Righteous Brothers". His partner, Bill Medley was late for the recording session when they laid down this track, so they went ahead and recorded Bobby. The story goes that when Bill got there, he heard what Bobby had recorded and thought that it was perfect the way it was. They were amazing vocalists, but not businessmen, and when they broke up for a few years, Bobby was living in a one bedroom apartment.

As I've noticed other posters have given you info about who The Righteous Bros were, etc., but as all-time great as they were (and still are), their absolute highs were met with VERY low points, as well. Bobby Hatfield was one-half of the original two (Bill Medley the other), and Bobby's version of "Unchained Melody" was/is BY FAR the greatest version (the song is so iconic that over 700 artists, including Elvis, sang it). Bobby was said to be one of the nicest people one could ever meet, great athlete in high school, seemingly had it all, but for whatever the reason, Bobby discovered cocaine, and that became his downfall. In 2003, Hatfield and Medley were to perform that night in Michigan, when Medley and Bobby's manager went to Hatfield's hotel room to see why he didn't make it to rehearsal. They discovered Bobby had died in his sleep on his hotel bed, and the toxicology report found that Hatfield had a fatal heart attack due to cocaine use. He was only 63.

I was a big Elvis Presley guy in high school. If you want, his version of Frank Sinatra's "My Way" or "Always on my mind" or even Elvis "An American Trilogy" song. So soulful and it really does clear the mind. Others if you ever show interest in. Cast no stone - Cody Jinks Dust in the Wind - Kansas Dirty Water- Rock and Hyde Tempted - Marty Stuart My Girl - The Temptations Heartache Medication - Jon Pardi Runaround Sue - Dion Take me home, country roads - John Denver Sweet Caroline - Neil Diamond

Righteous Brothers was a duo. You see Bobby Hatfield in this video. He sang this song solo. But the two of them (Bill Medley is the other "brother") usually performed together. It just so happened that the arrangement of Unchained Melody really worked best with just one singer. To hear the two of them together, check out "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," which became the most-played song on American radio in the 20th century. Bobby did a few other songs solo, including "Ebb Tide." There's really no quality recording of him performing it live on RU-vid (don't be fooled by the version by Paul somebody who looks a bit like Bobby and even sounds a bit like him...he ain't Bobby). But the studio recording of Bobby performing "Ebb Tide" is on RU-vid, and is a powerful song as well. "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration" is another good one. Their debut hit is a complete departure from these. Check out "Little Latin Lupe Lu" by the Righteous Brothers. It's one of those rock 'n roll songs that every cover band in America had to play back in the '60s. Bill Medley wrote it. And speaking of Bill Medley, he did a solo hit (under his name, not the Righteous Brothers) called "Brown Eyed Woman," which was about the taboo subject (at that time) of interracial love. (Released right after the Loving v. Virginia Supreme Court ruling that opened the door to interracial marriage in America.). Bill Medley also recorded a duet with Jennifer Warnes called "The Time of My Life" that was a smash hit. The Righteous Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. That night, the two of them performed their 1964 hit "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," and while Bobby's falsetto was mostly gone by then, it was a solid performance with an awesome band (led by David Letterman's band leader Paul Shaffer) that did a phenomenal job of recreating the original arrangement. Sadly, Bobby died a short while after their induction in 2003. But Bill Medley still performs to this day under the name The Righteous Brothers with another partner, Bucky somebody, who sings Bobby's parts. It ain't the same. But on some nights, you'll hear Bill Medley perform his version of Unchained Melody as a tribute to his former partner, Bobby Hatfield. It's a completely different song when Bill sings it in his bass baritone register. By the way, "Unchained Melody" was a cover when Bobby recorded it in 1965. The song was written for a 1955 movie called "Unchained," about a prisoner who was torn between serving out the final months of his long prison term and breaking out to return to his lover. The song actually made it to the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart by THREE DIFFERENT ARTISTS in 1955, including one instrumental version and two different vocalists -- one by Ray Hamilton and one by Al Hibbler. But when Bobby covered it in 1965, he made it his own. The Righteous Brothers version of the song is the one everybody copies whenever they cover it today. Much the same way anybody who covers "I Will Always Love You" always covers the Whitney Houston version, not the original by Dolly Parton (who actually wrote the song). Sometimes a singer performs the song in such a memorable fashion that from that time on, they OWN it. Such is the case with Bobby Hatfield's rendition of "Unchained Melody." Incidentally, this video of his performance cuts off the beginning where you see Bill. Here's the whole thing, restored with the color properly corrected so Bobby doesn't look like he was using Donald Trump's bronzer: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m0EBs6uRgtw.html

Ja, I can much agree das "passion" of music then we may never experience again. My first time hearing this I was very young. Mum was playing this with her other Rock tunes as she often listened while she was cooking. She said every girl in das world fell in love with this song when they first heard it...I did too. :-) I like your reaction much...Liked und Subbed. Auf Wiedersehen aus Wiesbaden :-)

That was Bobby Hatfield singing the best live version of, "Unchained Melody" ever recorded. In the days before pathetic and lazy singers used autotune to 'hide' their mediocrity, lack of practice and lack of talent.
