He was the finest, singer, musician that I know, certainly from my generation. I’m 70 and I loved him then and now and I think his voice is as rich and soulful as any voice you can find even through 2023.

Ahhh...the late Bobby Hatfield. This guy owns this song. I was 15 yrs old when I watched him sing this beautiful song on the Andy Williams show in 1965. I will never forget his performance. He owns this song and no one sang it like he did. RIP Bobby! We miss your beautful voice. ❤❤❤❤

Glad you reacted to your 2nd Righteous Brothers song. Bobby Hatfield's live solo of Unchained Melody is one of the very best TV performances ever. It was rerecorded 25 yrs later after the 1st recording was featured in the movie "Ghost". His partner Bill & him had just sung a song together b4 this solo. Looking forward to your next reaction to the incredible Righteous Brothers. They do not disappoint with their amazing vocals.

This great song was written for a 1955 Prison Movie titled "Unchained." It was Composed by multi-Academy Award winning Composer Alex North with Lyrics by Hy Zaret. Ten years later in 1965 on the "Andy Williams Show." Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers gave a performance that was one for the ages. Never has an Orchestra and a Singer were so in tune with one another as when Bobby Hatfield and the 'Andy Williams Orchestra.' Perform what many in the music industry consider as one of the greatest (Live) television performances ever in the history of live television. This was 57 years ago with no Auto Tune...Brilliant!

This song was a prison song, the subject was in prison nearing the end of his sentence, he loved his wife so much he couldn't get her out of his mind, he contemplated escaping from jail, he was so desperate to see her, eventually he realised if he did he would get more jail time if he escaped, he told his friend about this, and he wrote this song. Early 1950s, this performance is better than the recording, it's one of the best live performances l have ever seen. 💔♥️

Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher counter tenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song. In 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63. The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side. * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and he left. He said, 'No, I can do it better.' And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song." * This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof." Hatfield’s rendition of “Unchained Melody” although not the original, is the ‘gold standard’.

Since you were in the audience during this taping of "The Andy Williams Show", I have some questions. Did the taping take place in New York, or in Los Angeles? Did the show's staff instruct the audience not to give a standing ovation for this or any other song sung on the show? Was the orchestra performing the music for the song a large one, or a smaller one? Was the orchestra on the stage area, or below it, below the level where the audience was shown on camera?

I was sure the other Righteous Brothers' hit was You've Lost That Loving Feeling, but your previous RB song was Soul and Inspiration (most excellent also) but you REALLY need to hear You've Lost That Loving Feeling - the number 1 recorded song in the 20th century. Personally, Unchained Melody is my favorite by a small margin, but Loving Feeling is superb also.

I sang this to my wife at our wedding in 1983. She, however she said I murdered it. I'm guessing it's not a song for a baritone, she told me I was of better sticking to my drumming. I thought it was an appropriate song as I was in the Royal Marine Commandos, I had returned from the war for the Falkland Islands when I proposed, and now was shipping out to Sierra Leone two days later, so much for my attempt at being romantic. On the upside she liked me in my Dress Uniform, and having my comrades forming the sword tunnel helped. I must have done something right because we're still together. With 4 children, 7 grandchildren and a great grandson, we got busy on baby's when I was home. I served on active duty for my late Queen and Country for 34 years as a Royal Marine Commandos and in the British Special Forces, and then 3 years in hospital, and she stuck by me even though I'm wheelchair bound now. We do actually have a song by Queen called "Your Me Best Friend", a very apt song as she has been my best friend since we were both 15, and that's when I fell for her.

An unexpected, beautiful, powerful, OPERATIC closing phrase, would you say, Nomee? I've seen reactors in tears at the end of this rendition by Bobby Hatfield. The song was actually 10 years old when Bobby sang this on The Andy Williams TV Show live. "Unchained" was the 1955 prison movie; an inmate sang this song (with less dramatic effect) asking if his woman would still love him when he got out of stir, would she change her mind because time plays awful tricks on people when separated. A Bobby Hatfield studio version of "Unchained Melody" can be heard in the background at a couple of points in the more modern movie, "Ghost" (Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg).

I am 81 and have heard several artists before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of their albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we know. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.
