I've never seen a song bring out such deep emotions and joy in both men to a lesser extent and for sure to most women. Unchained Melody was written for a prison movie titled 'Unchained' (1955). It was first sung in the movie by African American opera singer, film and Théâtre actor Todd Duncan. The song was composed by Alex North with lyrics by Hy Zaret. Since 1955 this song has been sung by major recording artist from around the world. Making it one of the most recorded songs in history. In a live television performance on the 'Andy Williams Show' 1965. Bobby Hatfield of the 'Righteous Brothers' gave an epic performance that was one for the ages. His rendition has become the version every recording artist has used and uses today. Making it the quintessential version of them all. The rest as they say is history.
@richardzinno4909
@richardzinno4909 2 года назад
Todd Duncan did steal the show, in the movie “Unchained”, with his rendition of the movie’s theme song. He sings the song in its entirety during a live action scene, which depicts the tortured souls of the prison inmates. Duncan’s version was, necessarily, more restrained than Hatfield’s version, because of the intimate setting, of prisoners gathered, listening in sorrow. Todd Duncan would’ve been a much more famous singer (perhaps adding “recording star”, on top of his successful career in opera and stage); if the movie “Unchained” made it past the Drive-In Theater circuit.

Hello young lady. I viewed the airing of this song on the Andy Williams Show ( another talented singer ). The song had been playing for a couple weeks prior to this television program on " top 40 " radio stations and was already well received by listeners. I've carried the memory a long time now. I'm glad that Mr. Hatfield's rendition found it's way to RU-vid. I'm thankful to have seen your eloquent description and sense about this song. To me this is the definitive version. Subscribed.

Real honest to God TALENT. No electronic mumbo jumbo to disguise an inability to hit each note, exactly. Not only have I never heard it done better, I've never heard it done nearly as well. RIP Bobby Hatfield. Unmatched then and now.

@@glendirienzo1365 yup. But the Righteous Brothers (really Bobby Hatfield's rendition) is the best. But I loooove Elvis's version, it's incredible. Elvis had the unique ability to do a cover almost as good or better than the original. Bridge over troubled water, My way, and Unchained Melody are 3 examples that come to mind. Plus all his gospel stuff is incredible

I love your reaction to this fantastic song. Not breaking in too much. And your face tells it all. Lovely! Bobby Hatfield, half of Righteous Brothers, is 25 years old here. He had severe stage fright. And this was a live performance plus his parents were in the audience and it made him even more nervous. And he did THIS!! Watch how he bites his lip with a little smile at the end. I think he thought...."yessss! I nailed it". 😀

I really appreciate the reactions from a musician's standpoint. You give us an extra level of insight to things that we may not be aware of. Those high notes at the end are not part of the studio version, yet he apparently was confident enough to hit them on live television. As I am not very good amateur musician, I ran and grabbed my guitar (Sears Catalog - 1978) and discovered that the last high note he hit is the highest E on my guitar. As you explained, the fact that he looked so relaxed is amazing.

Dani - yes, Bobby Hatfield is an angel - no longer with us on this earth - some people are confused that this song was the "brothers" - but the "other brother" (they were not related) - Bill Medley did not sing on this amazing live version -- I've also heard that Bobby was nervous about this performance b/c his MOM was in the audience -- I'm sure she was proud!

I was senior in High School when this song first came out. My best girl and I used to close dance to this song every Friday night at the hop after the high school football game. I played on the football team and was stiff and sore, but it was so beautiful and breath taking we both cried every time. It was "our song". She had a cute little pony tail, long bobby socks, and pleated white skirt, and she wore my letterman sweater. I was so proud of how good she looked inside my letterman's sweater. She was the prettiest girl in the world. We went to different colleges. Time and distance ended our romance. 25 years later my daughter and I danced to that song at her wedding, and she wore the same letterman sweater, white bobby socks, a pleated skirt, and a pony tail. For some reason everyone cried. It is such a beautiful song. I am so happy the younger generation has discovered it.
