The reason why Hijab is prescribed for women is mentioned in the Qur'an in the following verses of Surah Al-Ahzab: "O Prophet! Tell yours wives and daughters, and the believing women that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad); that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested. and Allah is oft-forgiving, most merciful." (Al-Qur'an 33:59)

Why do everyone think that man can marry up to 4 woman?! Allah swt said : to 4,only if you're able to treat them all the same. And there is also a vers telling : you'll never be able to treat them the same no matter as hard as u try. So it means: habibi forget it, it's not possible - so only one! Why does everyone ignore that vers???

Thank you very much for your beautiful lecture! This patriarchal culture that was brought by middle eastern culture is giving Islam bad reputation. Here in Indonesia (where the muslims are +/- 85% of its total population) where we have our own culture, even though indeed Islam was brought by arabian merchants long ago, we really practise Islam without the cultural baggage. Women here can do anything they want! We even have former female president, subhanallah. This bad reputation and conception about Islam that heavily associated to middle eastern culture that makes people want to kill and hate muslims.

It was interesting to see the resistance to these two ladies' message both from men in the audience and from comments here.. Claiming that a religion like Islam - that rewarded women like Asia (the wife of Pharaoh) and Mary (Mother of Jesus PBUH) with praise that has been and will be reiterated for decades to come - is "patriarchal" is not an insult to the message of these women, it's an insult to the ignorant person who makes that claim. It's really up to you to live with your beliefs, but here's the thing: These women talked about the wives of the Prophet, how he treated them and how they lived their lives to do as much for Islam as men have done. It's a fact that a secure and honest man will say as loudly as a free woman would. You don't like how that makes you feel about yourself? That's your problem. Deal with it, instead of hiding behind a screen and bashing a dead woman and Islam and any thing else you can bash to hide your insecurities.

PolyRising I think the issue is that women are revered in Islam as mothers as wives. Their roles and rights are based on their gender, their adherence to a social role and their status in relation to men in some form. It’s great if Mohammed or others decided to treat women well, but this treatment does little to change the “rights” of women in Islam. Women are actually free when their rights are not dependent upon being married or single, being freeborn or a slave (as slavery is in Islam), or being a son or daughter. Maybe we should ask why are evaluating whether religion “allows” women to have rights such as an education - who cares? Let’s just do the right thing by women and girls and give them opportunities to thrive in the world.

Sister Amina says that the wives of the prophet s.a.w. were not shy, quiet obedient women, these women were not just any ordinary women and to speak of them like that is highly disrespectful, to say the wives of the prophet never obeyed him.

Actually she's correct. You just understand what she said the wrong way. Some of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ had personality, but that wasn't a problem because the Prophet ﷺ was a real man. Many inferior males nowadays are afraid of women having strong personality. Having a strong personality and being a feminist are two different things. A woman can have a strong personality and not be a feminist, while another woman might be soft and shy but also be a feminist. I hope this is easy for you to understand.

Aminha was a very convincing knowledgeable and self convinced speaker. She was also a conveniently and no doubt phenomenaly deluded one too. About the subject of Islam and much more so about the current place of women in that faith. The ideological and political practices in Islamic countryes are concurrent with religious ones and are NOTHING SHORT of TYRANICAL. Violence, repression, wanton killings, violations, and dictatorship are the everyday of citizens in the Middle East. Backwardness is the mark of this human tragedy. Aminah ment well but was wrong. The people's of the Middle East will eventually be free of the yoke imposed by corrupted Theocracies.
