I'm trans ... and i find this whole thing terribly embarrassing. Even with 4+ years of hormone therapy it was still undeniable that i had a HUGE advantage against biological women. And it wouldn't matter if i had done 40 years of hormone therapy, i would still keep that edge of size, wing-span, speed, strength, ect.. That this has gone this far is just embarrassing for trans people and is working against acceptance.

Sport is about fairness, allow Lia Thomas to compete in the women's swimming is unfair. There should be a separate category created for transgender athletes for inclusion. Time for common sense and keep the politics away from the sport.

I agree fully, but when will it stop? Although I agree with transpeople having seperate categories in sports. The anti trans conserve movement will then push to remove trans people from the gendered restrooms and charging rooms, which isn't about fairness, it's about unjust hatred. Once the remove restroom and changing room rights, they'll want to remove the recognition of trans people (this means removal of trans peoples rights to transition medically, socially and legally. And that is only on the anti trans side. Many transphobic women have decided to take arms with sexist men, sexist men who will take advantage of womens rights vulnerabilities whilst these women focus on trans women. (Not trans men who are also affected by the laws these women want changed). These sexist men are already stripping rights from women as these transphobic "femenists" focus on trans women. Think roe v wade.

@fulminisrecovery1264

@Dave Hanning I've played football rugby track volleyball and more. I'm perfectly aware men are often bigger due to testosterone. That can be accounted for if sports are separated by skill
@fulminisrecovery1264
@fulminisrecovery1264 2 года назад
@Dave Hanning no idea how you got that out of my reply. I'm saying there are some sports like wrestling boxing even rugby etc that some players have a clear advantage by being of a certain size or strength. Those can be taken care of by assigning size or strength as a skill and separating by that for example. Instead of gender which is arbitrary
@sfetcubogdan863

@@fulminisrecovery1264 dividing them by weight doesnt work, a 60kg biological man is way stronger than a 60 kg woman, lets divide them by strength then How do you measure it? Let’s say they are below a certain testosterone level, but a biological male that has gone through puberty and then transitioned still has some advantages like stated in the video. And what should we do with sports already divided into weight categories like boxing/mma? Should we pick another criteria just to allow transgender people to compete when they have a clear advantage? How I see it, the only way you can compete as a transgender without having a decisive advantage is if you transitioned in your early teens before puberty

Great interview with Riley Gaines. As part of the LGBTQ community and nothing against transgender individuals, I think it is an unfair race due to all the biological differences no matter how you view it. Nothing against transgender of any type, but the NCAA might need to consider creating a category where all female transgender swimmers compete against each other. This will create fair opportunities for everyone. We are living in a new world now where there are so many definitions of what individuals consider to be, and it is OK. We need more and more education, respect, and diversity inclusion should be included with fairness in everything. I wish the best for both athletes.

First off I know your not trying to be offensive but it does kind of hurt as a trans person myself because if there was a separate event for trans people that would feel like I’m being called out and not being respected for my identity. I think people are reading into it too much and should respect people for there identities instead of questioning them because that hurts. And even more so it hurts because people don’t question other customers people and critique there identity

@@tacocat2919 Hi Taco! This is not to hurt in any way any transgender identity. There are separate events for many things in life and within sports. For a sport such as swimming, when swimmers are within the age group, they are divided among age groups Boys/Girls compete - 10 and under, 11-12 and 13-14, and so on. The reality is that no matter how many hormone blockers after puberty or adulthood a person receives, there will still be some body parts and features that will not change. Among the few are lung capacity and strengths. It is a sensitive subject. It will have many different views. I am all about respect and fairness for all, but some tangible facts cannot be changed, no matter a million ways to look at them.

Unfortunately, we are really far from that. The only reliable way to know if someone is trans is if the individual has undergone puberty and has identified that they are trans, with the help of a professional therapist. Having children make such drastic decisions in such a young age is very, very risky. Yes, some changes like hormone blockers are reversible, but I don't know if I can trust a child with deciding on transitioning... So I totally get it. Thank you for having Riley Gaines on your show. I truly believe that no transgender people should be in any sport if it's not the gender you are born. It doesn't matter how many hormones you inject it will not make you a man or woman. The muscle mass for a man is much different then that of a woman and it doesn't change by use of hormones. It is wrong and they do this because they couldn't win being a man so they changed just to win nothing more! By the NCAA is doing is setting us backwards not forwards. Women fought so hard to have their own sports and rights and they are gone and Women have to fight again for their rights because of these men that are sick and confused same as the women that think they are men.. At least they aren't taking sports away from men as these men are taking sports away from young women. Since the day this behavior gets enabled, roughly since 1.5 years. Media and such make this whole Trans thing so big that a trans athlete winning in a women tournament is marketed as something right, fair and wonderful. While most people know that this has nothing to do with fairness, but today you have to think about actual consequences if you speak out, like, look at Riley, she got so much backlash and people tried attacking her, just for speaking facts. Also this whole Feminism debate went completely out of control, Feminism slowly but surely transforms from enabling women to be made on par with men, to make women feel bad if they don't accept others wills and thoughts as well as holding back, this evolves backwards. In my opinion most of this media trans debate actually makes people hesitant and none accepting about trans since we only see those extremes, things got too easy, trans people from before that law changes were like completely different, now Trans feels like a hype and not like an actual mental disorder, which should not be said nowadays, while it was fully accepted a while ago...

I totally support lia as a trans woman but not as a swimmer. We make a lot of sacrifices for swimming, and *part* of your gender identity might be one of those sacrifice. Wear a women's suit, have your preferred name on the scorecard, but trans women need to be scored with the men. trans men on HRT also should have to see with the men. Given the complications of the situation, we should change the categories: women's and open, instead of women's and men's. Anyone can "swim up" (I mean, ledecky would probably go in the open and win just because she can) but only cisgender or female at birth people who have never been on testosterone can compete in the womens. I find it incredibly frustrating that biological men or even the effect testosterone has on your body makes such a big difference in swimming, I want to say it doesn't matter, but unfortunately the difference is massive.

It is very discouraging that UPenn and the Ivy League slandered as a transphobe or homophobe any woman who questioned the specifics of the rules that the NCAA came up with to approve competing in the women's category, like 10 mmols of testosterone or 2 years or hormone therapy. They should simply engage in debate about the pros and cons of different thresholds to make the thresholds fairer over time. Swimming gold medalist and women's rights attorney Nancy Hogshead-Makar wrote a great article about the reason for a separate women's category in the first place and about how it seems wrong to allow Thomas to enter that separate women's category when top men are 11% faster than top women in most events and Thomas only became 2% slower after 2 years of hormone therapy to lower testosterone. One other observation is that in the Olympic year of 2021, there were 300 men who swam faster than the most dominant woman swam in one of her best events, according to the FINA website's list of top times for the year. If even 1 percent of those 300 men decide to transition, and it makes them only a couple percent slower like Hogshead-Makar says it did for Thomas, then the chance for born women to hold world records may go away. One can support LGBTQ rights strongly and still question the thresholds to compete in this women's category. It is tragic that UPenn and the Ivy League are aggressively shaming women for simply asking these questions. www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/nancy-hogshead-makar-explains-problems-with-lia-thomas-situation/

We are being insensitive to trans people because we are standing up for women’s and men’s rights? Well you are being insensitive for standing up for trans rights then!! This is to make it 100% fair for EVERYONE!! So while you’re crying like a baby, screaming “we have rights”, these two separate categories were created long before any trans person tried to compete in these world sports events. So no, no one is discriminating. It only makes sense to make a separate category to make it fair. A trans women category and trans men category.

Everyone always says that there wouldn’t be enough people to make an open category, which kind of make sense for team sports, but swimming is an individual sport. Who cares if there’s 1-2 people in an event, they could totally still do it. How much time would that actually take up? Swimming events are timed, like that’s the whole thing. They could compete against their past times or other people’s times.
@TheRisky9

@@TheRisky9 yeah that’s true I recently learned that the International Olympic Committee is working on rule changes for each sport that will give guidelines for accommodating trans athletes. Once those are announced, surely the professional athletics associations and the NCAA on down will implement those same changes. I’m glad that they’re actually acknowledging the issue and doing something about it, it does take time though.

So, just some thoughts after watching the interview: Firstly, I think it's important when discussing lgbtq topics to use respectful vocabulary. I think misgendering Lia Thomas and using the word transgender as a noun instead of an adjective undermines any valid concerns one could have on topics such as trans swimmers' inclusion in higher level sports. It gives the sense of a lack of proper understanding or compassion when deliberating on such a complex and sensitive topic. Secondly, I feel badly for Riley Gaines because she went into this meet believing Lia Thomas was out of her league. Seeing as they tied in an event where Gaines was seeded much lower going into the final, I would have hoped she could now recognize that (even if she feels Lia had some sort of advantage) that it didn't mean Lia was faster than the girls competing there, including Riley. I also feel badly for Lia Thomas because external forces have turned many in the swimming world against her personally. Denying her credentials as an athlete while competing on the men's team or the women's team at UPenn would be a fool's errand, and yet her accomplishments in both fields have been tarnished to promote a dubious narrative surrounding transgender women athletes. And lastly, there have been several cases of cisgender women failing to meet the testosterone level requirement for women's sports internationally due to their naturally high testosterone levels, so the point made that trans women are somehow competing at testosterone levels far above that of cis elite women is erroneous. The biology of gender is complicated, and I would advise anyone citing the science around gender to really make a good effort to understand the facts behind it before leveraging it in debates of this magnitude. I hope Riley can eventually come to see that this experience in no way affected her magnificent swimming career. In fact, since they tied, Riley would have finished 5th in the event even if Lia wasn't allowed to swim it, which is the tragic irony of it all.
@carrietremble
@carrietremble 2 года назад
You clearly don't understand the difference between sex and gender, as evidenced by your "The biology of gender is complicated" statement. There is NO biology of gender, as gender is merely a social construct. SEX is what has biology. In sports, bodies compete against bodies. It is not a competition of identities against identities.

@Mandala30...Very well-spoken, although I admit to being in the camp that believes Lia has a biologically unfair advantage swimming against biological females. That being said, Riley's concern was not her own finish, but with the 9th and 17th place girls who failed to even qualify because Lia Thomas bumped them out of the top eight spots in each category she - as a biological male, remember- got placed in. JMHO.

She should have competed in her biological gender then to avoid all this chaos but NOo.., SHe was getting 200 or 400 the place there so to feel better about herself she played in women's team.. So we should only consider Lea's feelings and invalidate all women who feels injustice that they are competing against a biological male who obviously has more lung capacity, RBC count, larger heart and more body mass..?

I can see both sides of this debate and while there were some good points made and the tone was generally respectful, there were some uncomfortable moments that reflect a lack of education on this topic. I suggest you carefully consider if and how you decide to devote more of your channel to this topic. Riley and you both referred to transgender people as “a transgender” or “transgenders” which is not correct used as a noun. You asking Riley to talk about the “appearance”, “size comparison”, and “anatomy” of Lia when standing next to her was a bit strange; Lia isn’t a zoo animal.

Because no matter how much you change your outward appearance to more resemble mine, it does not change the rest of your body, muscle mass or density, lung and heart size or capacity, bone strength ect which remain that of a male. It is not equal or fair, title 9 gives women a place to compete against each other without males competing against us. Also let me point out male sports isn't having an issue with trans men competing because no matter how many hormones or surguries they get they won't be setting records in a male event.
