A fine spring day to head out on the vintage Roger Riviere French bicycle and make sure everything is all good. We so a little gravel cycling, some bike adjustments, and best of all prove you can survive on vintage components!
Steel is real, flat pedals win medals, friction is fine, and we save the rim brake and front derailleur!

If only the disc brake ppl knew that look stop salmon pads handle the rain extremely well
@TimFitzwater

💯 yup quality of pads and brakes all matter. Not every disc brake is better than every rim brake.

@@TimFitzwater I beg to disagree vigorously; my SRAM Code R 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes stop/scrub speed/control the terrain feel better with ONE finger than Anything eraser-brake related. You use the brakes less or you lightly tap or feather the brakes more strategically and are faster. You can also brake later in a section of road or trail than you would with eraser-brakes. Even the Shimano V-brakes on the last rim-braked MTB i had back somewhere in the earlier 90's sucked in the rain and mud; you had to pre-brake before you actually hit the brakes. Also, on long, fast mountain road descents you run the risk of blowing your tubes and crashing from excess rim-heat. Additionally, the modulation and plush power i get from my Codes makes it easier to navigate tricky sections of the trail faster with less hand exertion. That matters when you're on the trail or any kind of long/fast descent for a while..! Lastly, adding 60 extra pounds to one's bike for Bikepacking/touring really shows the dangerous limitations of rim-brakes. Saw a video where a rim-braked touring type Nearly crashed really badly on a long gravel descent because of insufficient brakes not meant for the combined weight of the bike, touring gear, and rider. BTW, i started riding/mountain-biking in '89 (am 51 now) with V-brakes and they were good for their time but, once disc-brakes became more common, affordable, and i was able to test ride them, i Never looked back. Also, even if i had a road (or CX) bike, it would have disc-brakes. The speeds you can hit on a road-bike on a long downhill are slow motorcycle speeds and that Demand more powerful/safer brakes than glorified erasers rubbing against a rim...
@TimFitzwater
@TimFitzwater Год назад
So I don’t get it. I said not every disc brake is better than every rim brake. You named a specific disc brake. I had TRP Spyres which were mechanical discs which couldn’t hold a candle to my 9 speed Dura Ace rim brakes let alone what the modern direct mount rim brakes would do.
@virgilfulton4426

Forget about the consequences of precipitation and rim brakes... putting stem shifters on a 3ttt stem is probably messing with the space time continuum to a level that may threaten our existence in this timeline. (I love it.) Long live St. Paddy's Day, memories of old friends, bikes like the Roger Riviere, and the old souls associated with them.

I wonder if they make gravel tires for my Schwinn it's 27x1 1/4
@TimFitzwater
@TimFitzwater Год назад
There are some 27 inch tires out there with tread. I think Panaracer has some. To me it is all about how wide you can go without rubbing on the chain stays - which is why I like converting to the smaller 700c wheel size to get a bit more clearance.

Way Bro! Rim brakes work really good. Disk brakes work better in some ways, OK most ways but rim brakes still work. For reals, they still work. Just not as well as other brakes and stuff. . . Don't judge. LYB!

Rode rim brakes for years in sun and rain, no issues. But I bought a 1974 Schwinn Suburban just for fun, all original. Got caught in the rain and went through an intersection squeezing like a madman and doing the Fred Flintstone braking. It was like the brakes weren’t there. Before some tech advancement, or the shoes were old and hardened? And FYI I will never get used to headwinds.
@TimFitzwater
@TimFitzwater Год назад
Yeah / it really does depend on the pads and the brakes. I do have some truly bad ones. But usually an adjustment and a pad upgrade will fix most up to be “good enough”. I’ll tell ya - the 9 speed era Dura Ace brakes I have on an 1986 Schwinn are better than any mechanic disc brakes I’ve tried. Headwinds really can ruin a day - I prefer hills - those I know are going to be there…

Hey Tim! Just getting into cycling and picked up a 1980 Trek 710 which begged the question: you have any touring on your trek planned in the near-ish future? Love the channel, I have been binge watching it. Your style is sick!
@TimFitzwater
@TimFitzwater Год назад
Planning more tours but won’t use my Trek for them anymore. I love that bike but it just doesn’t handle well loaded - it wasn’t really made for it and I finally had to admit it to myself! I still ride it as a road bike though. Yours should do much better as I believe the 700’s has longer seat stays and are touring oriented. Thanks so much - I appreciate that!! 🥰

I always get nostalgic when you ride over the "High Level Bridge" between Akron and CFO. I miss the old grated deck - it made you feel like riding a green cloud over the Cuyahoga River. Looking forward to the tribute video to your friend. So cool that you ride the bike in his honor.
