Hey everyone! Welcome to my channel and welcome back to all you amazing returning viewers. I'm so glad you're here on this journey with me. I truly, deeply appreciate you're interest in watching me create!
Today's video is my attempt to recreate a pour similar to a picture that caught my eye. I realized right away that I'd already done something similar but wanted to get more vibrancy and brightness so I'm going at it again.
FOr this type of pour, I'm using my normal fluid art pouring medium which is 1 part gloss gel medium to 4 parts American floetrol. You can use any brand and density of gloss gel including super heavy which simply makes your mixed medium thicker, not glossier. I don't add water to thin until I have my paint or pigment added and know what kind of pour I'm creating. It will be quite thick under normal conditions but, in the desert in August, it's on the thin side. You should know that this mixture creates fluid paints that move a little slower, dry slower and take longer to cure. If you have bubbles, you must pop them all if possible or the finished piece will show them. Torch carefully and often.
I apologize I seem a bit low energy and not super excited recently. As I spoke about in the video, I am struggling with a build up of toxicity from blooming with housepaints and varnishes. I'm detoxing and fasting to clear my system but it's currently sapping a bit of my excitement. Physically, I am slowly feeling better, mentally is a different story. I love bloom painting with Sheleeart recipes and styles. Being reintroduced to blooming brought me back to an artform Id grown bored with and lost interest in. As far as I'm concerned, the journey takes you as far as you want to go. For me, it's a hard pill to swallow knowing I can't continue. At least not in the capacity I have been at. I didn't cover everything in the video but I wanted to provide information for those who use housepaints and varnishes in their art. Symptoms can be elusive to connect and seem totally unrelated unless you can a thorough understanding of health effects and causes. I spent 35 years of my life entrenched in the beauty industry working daily with all manner of dangerous, volatile chemicals and substances. The exposure eventually built up in my body to the point where I was having severe reactions to things I once used daily without a care. You can go back and undo the damage, all you can do is avoid those hazards going forward but warn others who are currently on that path about protecting their health. I now live with hyper sensitivity to many many chemicals including laundry, household and art materials.
I have been working on a way to get similar outcomes from non-standard ingredients that won't make me sick so I can get back to doing blooms. Oddly enough, the recipe of floetrol and gloss gel was my first stop and best result. It's not the same but may be as close as I can get to blooming again. I cannot achieve the full effect and I am not sure the facsimile is good enough but I will keep experimenting. I know pretty quick if I'm going to have an adverse reaction to what I'm working with. I got great results with varathane triple thick, Josonja gloss varnish and my pouring medium mixed together however I also got an epic migraine, nausea and swollen, painfully irritated eyes! Before you ask, know that I have always been very careful to ventilate my studio well and use all other responsible precautions. Wearing a full hazmat suit and full face respirator isn't practical. I just dumped a pile of money into building a wall between my 2 front rooms, sealing off my studio from the rest of my house, upsizing my hepa air purifyer, installing a higher cfm vent fan and a more airtight waste disposal system. Keep in mind, once you take of your protective gear, the paint fumes are still there and your protection is not. The other people and creatures you live with also do not benefit from your temporary protective gear. The chemicals in paint and varnish continue to gas off for months after you consider your art dry.
Anywho, with all that being said, please exercise caution with your art materials. Learn to know when your body is rebelling and what to do about it. I love you all and want you to be safe and happy!
