Ringdown is the event that occurs in the final fraction of a second of a merger of two black holes. As two black holes begin to orbit each other, moving faster and faster as they draw closer together, they begin to disrupt the fabric of space-time, sending out gravitational waves. Ringdown, this final moment as the two black holes merge, is detected as a massive gravitational wave, the frequency of which is mathematically connected to the mass of the resulting black hole. This piece uses data from GW190521, detected in May of 2019, which was a merger of two black holes that occurred 7 billion years ago.
