I came across this video earlier this week because we were concerned about our dove, Molly, as she was limping a little around her cage, wouldn't perch, and most noticeably, had stopped cooing. She turned 21 this year, and we've always kept her in a large cage my father built, indoors. Years ago, she clipped her foot against a ceiling fan. We took her to a vet, who said the injury was minor, but the xrays told us Molly is actually a HE, but we still always used feminine pronouns in reference to her. Over the past few years, she began limping, as the vet said would likely happen. But otherwise, she's been happy, vocal (cooing, "laughing," bowing) and affectionate. When she grew quiet recently, and didn't seem well, I checked with a vet who said to wait another day, but as long as she had her appetite and was drinking water, not to be too concerned. Her behavior was probably due to age, and the aches of the old injury. Thankfully, she's back to perching and cooing her heart out.

Hi Frank! Pardon me. Since you have a lot of experience with Doves, what would be your advice for me. My dove is not really moving or making sounds since yesterday. She looks sick. I don't have a vet around. What do you recommend me to do to help her? She could have gotten a cold since two nights ago it was freezing. She is indoors at night, but we have no insulation. Any recommendation would be greately appreciated. Thank you!

I have 2 doves. A male ring neck dove named Della (thought girl at first and my first dove was Perry Peace hence Della). And my other dove I believe is a Eurasian Collared dove named Peetie. I inherited her from my mom. Perry Peace lived 10 years but got some sort of tumor twords end of life. I seldom let my doves out together because Della bites at Peetie hard. However I have 2 cockatiels too. The younger one loves to snuggle with Della and preen his feathers! Its very sweet to see.

I own four ring necks. My pair mulan (brown) and mushu (white) were sitting on an egg and I didn’t notice after 6 days. I was about to chuck out the egg because they usually lay infertile eggs but I decided to candle it and there was a baby growing! so ya know I put back the egg and am waiting for a baby to hatch :)

I got my two doves 11 years ago from a friend who got them at a flea market for my 10th birthday. I'm not exactly sure what their ages are since they were already big in size when I got them. One is gray with red eyes and the other is light brown with honey brown eyes. They are sweet to me but they fight with each other so much that we had to put them in individual cages. I have high hopes they will live another decade or so. They are so energetic and adorable little guys. :)

A couple of those come visit me every day at lunch, i give them bread or rice. Should i feed them so often? I'm aftraid they might become too dependent and stop searching for food by themselves? I had a diamond dove who was born normal. But after 6 year's her top beak started going to the right and her bottom went to the left. She died because at that point she couldn't eat her food no more. I'm curious if it was the seeds or a health condition. I'd love your opinion on this!

Doves are naturally calm and make fantastic pet birds. I do let mine free fly. I keep mine outside in a avairy during the summer. I would say they are the easiest bird to finger train because they are not nervous like parakeets or lovebirds.

16 years ago I found one out in my horse corral , it must have been attacked by a Crow because it had a broken wing and under its wing it had been badly bitten. I used neosporin under the wing and the bite wound healed up good , but the broken wing did not mend well , so I've had my little friend 16 years , not sure how old the ring neck dove was to begin with. Really good bird , it finally let's me Pat it on the head and gently Pat it's back. I named this little sweetie 》 Dover. Not sure if it's male or female. It doesn't matter.

Eurasian collared doves are not native in the U.S. In Colorado it is open season, kill as many as you can as often as you can. They were introduced in the U.S. in the 1980's according to WikiPedia. They are aggressive to native species and they have an irritating, annoying call. They are an Asian species, right along with the Ring Neck Pheasant.

Nice video for those considering getting a Dove. Minnesota? Me too. I keep my 3 in an indoor Aviary 3D x 4H x 6L. I try to let them out everyday. They love to stay in my home office, on my keyboard, desk, shoulder, my hand, etc... always near me or on me. They are about 8 yr now. I also have Pigeons and Chickens. One Pigeon, Simon, 13 yrs old Modena (retired), now gets to permanently live in the house loose in the Family Room. He is a important member of our family, my constant companion, even goes camping with us. The Pigeons and Chickens have an outdoor solar heated Aviary, free to roam the yard. . . You may? be interested in an indoor Dove Door I made? I will post it here soon. I also made special perches for the birds to be free in the house. Easy to clean.

we have a wild population in my garden it is backed onto over a hundred 5 acer plots so it's a safe haven in a populated area I live in ireland there's at least 4 breeding pairs with 3 healthy chicks from the pair in our garden and iv about counted 8 other youngsters we had a magic view from my room into there nest and saw them hatch,grow and fledge and seem to be doing well it's hard to know who's who now cos this year's chicks feathers are in, im unsure if they stay around all winter I put up boxes but anything could take up residence in them..I read there's only 500 coated breeding wild pairs between Europe and Asia, none of these birds have rings.

Thanks for the video! this was very helpful. I plan to get an Orange ring neck dove in just a few weeks, and I was curious: Is there any difference in the attitude, from white to orange? Also I live in New England, and was a little concerned about the cold weather, Are there any tips you can give on keeping them comfy during the winter season?
@DaveSherva
@DaveSherva 7 лет назад
There is no difference in personalities between colors. The key is spending time with them and gaining their trust. It's easier if the bird is young. You can not keep doves outdoors during the winter. They must be brought inside once it gets below 50F. Pigeons are a different story and can be kept outside but not doves.

I'm thinking about getting a bird, and doves seem like a good way to go. My question is, since I am starting college soon and will be out of the house 6-8 hours a day, should I get two birds instead of one? I've heard they will bond with each other more than me if I do that, but I'm more concerned about the bird's health than how close it is to me. If I have two doves, will they still bond with me? I definitely don't want them breeding, so should I get two females or two males together? I only have the room for one cage, so I'd prefer if they are able to be housed together. While I would prefer males, would they fight? Very helpful video, by the way.
@DaveSherva
@DaveSherva 10 лет назад
Thanks for the comment. Doves are fantastic pets. If you get two then go with two females. Males will fight. You will want to handle them and give them attention. If your going to be in a dorm they may be a little noisy. I keep mine outside for half the year in a outdoor enclosure. You can see it in my breeding ringneck doves video. One bird would be fine as long as you gave it daily attention. They also shed a feather dust and their feathers during moult. Not the cleanest bird but probably the calmest and easy to train pet bird around.

If they have 50 they should have some that have paired up I would think. It's the behavior and sounds or lack of sounds to tell the difference. Females are quiet and generally more mellow. The males will be louder and act like bullies. My males feet were a little more purple in color than the females. You really have to watch them act with each other.

I have never owned a bird, on this level, in my life! I've always owned chickens and since last march, I have become an owner of two lovely, but ridiculously easily shy and fearful male ducks! LOL! But, with that said, I am really, REALLY contemplating getting a ringneck dove. Now, I know they are illegal to have, but I would rather have a mourning dove. But, since they are protected by federal law, a ring neck doves seems right up my ally! However, again, I've never owned a bird of this magnitude and level before. I've been reading up on the care and all of that for a few days now. I believe I want a female ringneck only because I feel like she would be quieter and easy to train (I gotta learn how to train an animal period! LOL!), and easy to bond, clean after, all of that. So, are there any tips for a newbie like me that I may not have read up on?
@DaveSherva
@DaveSherva 10 лет назад
I like females because they are not as loud and vocal. Doves are not like a screaming parrot but do laugh and coo. As far as temperament both males and females make great pets.
