+deezynar you got that right, and he wrote a ton of his own material. Photograph is an unintentional reference to George Harrison. He had a brilliant solo career and his vocals are unmistakable, a true legend on his own.
+Sweet Heart obviously you didn't listen to the isolated drum tracks. He wasn't a polished player. He was a simple player. Also, he even admitted in an interview that since he was left handed, when he played fills, he would hesitate and he never overcame that obstacle in his playing. So, if you listen to the isolated drum tracks, he would many times hesitate when he went from the beat to the fill. Also, his little drum break/solo that was on the song The End was a complete rip off of a snippet from the Iron Butterfly drum solo,, but what ringo played worked, but it was a simple solo in a 2 minute song. I think what Ringo player, at least what I THINK he played, was simple and it fit the music. Was it great? From a "it fit and worked" yeah, but Ringo can't really do much more than that since he didn't know his rudiments, he couldn't really do anything more complex, and that's why he pretty much didn't work after the Beatles and do anything more advanced. He wasn't getting calls to play on other people's albums. So top musicians weren't calling Ringo up, instead, they would call other session players and drummers that were more capable. Please don't be delusional and brainwashed by what is being marketed. He really wasn't that great of a musician. Most competent drummers can easily play what he plays and can do a lot more than he could ever do. He never advanced himself as a drummer and in order for him to play concerts, he typically has to have another drummer playing at the same time because he simply can't really take control of the band. Look at his All Starr Concerts, he's always got someone else playing drums with him.
Doug Zander Wow, that's a lot of F words being used. Sounds like you got your panties all bunched up. Yeah, I have played for many years and yes, I can play in the pocket. especially if the bass player and the rest of the band can also play in the pocket. Ringo makes weird hesitations, he even ADMITS to doing that because he's left handed and he's playing on a right handed drum set and he really never took lessons or does much in the way of practicing to figure out how to NOT play those hesitations. He even ADMITS to it. He's a basic drummer and the music he was playing didn't require anything more than what he did. I don't tailor my playing after his as there are a lot of other great drummers that I would rather learn from. I haven't had the need to play like Ringo since I never played in a Beatles cover band. If I did, then I would have to copy his playing, which isn't that difficult to do as long as I have the same setup and tuning. But it's not something i really spent a lot of time with. Can I play basic beats and fills? Sure. Some gigs require it and some gigs don't. There are other drummers that play simple beats that have, IMO, a better groove. There are a TON of R&B albums with essentially simple drumming that has a great sense of groove to it. Ron Bushy sucks. I listened to his pathetic drum solo and I got sick of listening to it. I was around 12 when I started to learn how to play the damn thing and it wasn't that difficult to play it, I just got tired of it after playing the solo essentially note for note after about a couple of minutes. It's simple shit. Ringo's little solo on that one song is essentially a snippet of what Ron did earlier. Ron's solo came out before Ringo's did and I kind of laugh at how similar they are. But I've moved on from that style of playing soon after that shit came out in the first place. Soloing was never Ringo's forte. He's just a basic beat player that has weird simple fills. Nothing much to them and the music didn't require anything more than that. Some of us have moved on to learning how to play from other drummers that are far more interesting from a soloist perspective or from playing different types of music. I don't typically listen to the beatles for the drumming, I listen more for the melodies. Now, as far as your name calling and other immature comments? sounds like you have a personal problem. I've been listening to Beatles music since it first hit the market. They were my favorite group until I started listening to other bands and I only revisit their music every once in a while when the mood hits me. But he's why Ringo is overhyped. Even when he plays a concert, the guy has to hire other drummers to carry the gig since he's just there for show. He always has another drummer doing the actual playing. Not my idea of a great drummer and he hasn't progressed any since the 60's. He does the same schtick.
+Oneness100 ----well, i give you your opinion. What I failed to say is I think its Ringo's musicality that always struck me as great, appropriate, inventive. The left vs right thing...he said that I think because it was an easy, plausible explanation as to the 'sound' of his fills or the tom that got played for an extra 1/8th note in a fill. That has absolutely Nothing to do with his drumming, his groove. Go listen to What Goes On? and hear that fast hat shuffle. You cant do that stuff, nobody can. Then listen to the way he pulses the bass drum pattern. Perfectly. No fills all groove, all dynamic. No fucky volume control knobs. All handsewn! Go. Go now! Run and play that thing.
+Oneness100 ----and regardless of your drums tunings, you, could never ever play with his feel. Savoy Truffle, She Said She Said, Strawberry Fields Forever. Never do it, not in your lifetime, mot in your dreams. If you think differently, then you're not listening properly.
Doug Zander Why should have to worry about playing those songs? I haven't ever needed to play those songs for a gig, so why would I need to? I'm sure I could figure it out. I've figured out far more complicated stuff before. I'm sure I can play a lot more than a couple of beats for a couple of Beatles songs that Ringo will never be able to do either. I don't have to try to figure those beats unless I have to play those songs for a gig, but I don't get asked to play beatles songs since most of the gigs I've done aren't Beatle song related gigs. I'm not worried. He can't play 90% of what I can play, no matter how hard he tried, so as far as I'm concerned, I can play more than he can that he'll NEVER be able to do, so I'm ahead of him. I may not have his money, but I don't have to do stupid commercials to continually have an income, so I don't have whore myself out to these companies who's products I don't use. hahahahahahahahhahahahhahaha. :-) I was never going into these discussions from a standpoint of what I can and can't play vs what he can and can't play, but you seemed to turn it into that. I was just commenting on what i hear and it's not that big of a deal since I have NO FUCKING DESIRE TO PLAY BEATLES SONGS, to get my rocks off. You obviously think that's what every drummer wants to do? come on. There's a whole big world of other drummers to listen to, enjoy and learn from that aren't Ringo. But maybe you haven't progressed passed that. Ringo's playing style is because he never took lessons or really practiced, so it sounds little on the naive side. He obviously didn't get a ton of other gigs other than that type of playing. He certainly can't play various forms of jazz, or funk, or many other styles of music. Oops. He's just Ringo Starr. BFD. The novelty has worn off dude. I guess maybe you are still a young teenager still starry eyed. Eventually, you'll grow out of it.
The kids in our family heard the Beatles growing up, just like we did. Now they are having kids and theirs will know and love them, also. Beatles 4 Ever! Ringo is a wonderful man, they each are, in their own way.
I was backstage as a 14 year old during this taping. Talked with him behind the curtain for 10 minutes while some comedian warmed the crowd. He couldn't be nicer and my mom was too excited to speak. Very nice, very nervous guy. Knowing sports far more than music at that age, I had no clue who he was :(
Uh...I 'officially hate you!' (you spent time with 'me Idol' and I've never even seen him in-person and up-close) And i knew nothing about 'sports' at 14...just motorbikes-books- 'and how can I get some girl naked?'
Listen people, Ringo Starr was a very good drummer, but people like to compare him to others great drummers in rock history, but the great thing about Ringo was that he was a complete band drummer and a orchestrated type of drummer who would put the right sound to the right song base on what type of song the Beatles would play and those unique type of drum sound he would put on the song so they will come out perfect and that why all the Beatles sounds was great, that is the number one reason why Ringo was a special drummer no question about it if you know music, you will know what I'm talking about.
+John Thomson I dont know why there is some negativity towards this guy .. The beatles wanted the best drummer in Liverpool to be in their band.. and they got him.. its that simple.. .. and it obviously worked ...
I dont understand why some of these comments disrespect Ringo. Hes a proper drummer and hes a funny loyal guy...The Beatles were packed with creative talent but they needed Ringo to keep em from exploding.
John, Paul, and George picked Ringo to be their drummer to fill out the band. Read again what I just wrote, that is critically important to their history. He is a brilliant drummer. i know because I have been a drummer for over 40 years. He inspired more people to play than ANYONE who ever sat behind a kit. More drumsets were sold because of Ringo than any drummer in history. At the Beatles peek, 3,000 drumsets a month were sold at Pro Drum in Hollywood. Listen to the studio out takes. The only guy in the band who NAILED IT EVERY TIME was Ringo. Lennon was always caustic. He later apologized for that remark about Mr. Starkey. I could go on, but if you don't know about sitting behind a drumset and playing with genius musicians, shut up. Ringo was once confronted at a news conference by a guy who railed him for not doing this or doing that and all these wrong things in music. Ringo responded, "Are you in a band?" The guy said, "Yes" "What's the name of your band?" Ringo asked. The guy resonded with the band name. Ringo said, "Never heard of them…..I was i the Beatles." End of story.
Kenneth Austin Ringo himself said his quirky style was due to his being left-handed but playing a right-handed drum set. That really doesn't explain or diminish his inspirational qualities, of course.
He had a style that will never by duplicated ... because he was a left hander playing a right handed set. That is the way he learned how to play - which resulted in a swing type rock style. Love Ringo.
Richard Starkey.
Is Ringo the greatest drummer ever? No but at one point he was probably the greatest drummer in rock (pre-Keith Moon). Listen to him on early Beatle songs from 63 & 64. He kicked the band in the ass, his tempo was rock solid, & his fills were amazingly inventive. He was arguably the most accomplished musician in the band at the time (along with George). And even after (66 to 69) he has a style & a sound that is still emulated to this day.
Sir Ringo was the essential music parts w/out the beats of the drums the music was just unhappy, the saddest of all you don't deserved it.....take note
Good questions Carson. Carson and Colbert probably are the best question answerers in Late Night History. Letterman had Starr on during this, & his questions sucked.
In any other band, George would have been the leader. John, Paul, George, and Ringo, way too much talent for just one band! The Beatles. Never before and never again.
my let ear enjoyed this interview and then my right ear liked it more, however, when i joined them together they had problems with both so i stopped and dd it backwards and had my left earbud in my right ear and my left ear bud in my right ear and it worked fantastic. NOPE it was only in ONE speaker. Still liked it
I just want to know what this obsession with ringo's looks? He is strange looking, yet everyone goes crazy for him... am I missing something or is it just that rockstar persona that makes him sexy?
After Ringo had already told Carson who was in the band including Jim Keltner and Levon Helms, @ 2:40.... Carson didn't even have a clue who they were. lol!
Ringo seems like a very amiable humble and likeable fellow. and Johnny Carson seems to be very much at ease with him. maybe Ringo wasn't the greatest drummer in history - just very COMPETENT and a very good TEAM PLAYER (with no unwieldy ego problems). and that translates to amiable humble and likeable.
charles ranalli maybe Ringo wasn’t the greatest drummer in history? Yeah, literally that’s true but not in the way you use it. This guy was a top notch drummer. Just listen to some of the early concerts they did with some of Rock N Roll songs for the 50s.
Johnny didn't know one name that Ringo was reeling off. His generation was scared stiff of Rock Culture. They didn't like it, they didn't understand it, but they couldn't ignore it. Only George Burns stepped up and delved into it. He bought SGT. PEPPER and analyzed the lyrics..........Go Georgie!
The 1999 rows parade on New Year’s Day the theme of the parade was called echoes of the century and I was going to be driving a satellite float of the Dr Pepper float and Ringo was going to be on that float I was driving and since Dr. Pepper is a British company when Ringos agent got wind of it that he was going to be on this float he wanted $150,000 appearance money and that squashed it they ended up re-designing a float and I didn’t get to meet Ringo Starr
NO! He came from skiffle which involved the minimal drum kit and a steady beat. The sound he added to The Beatles recording with that style of drumming (simplistic as some may think) was an essential. He rhythmically changed the way rock and roll accents to the one and three beat. Listen to everything before him and everything after. The Beatles would have been a different band and not as successful with any other drummer. All three of the others probably would have surfaced, though not to the heights they achieved. I realized that when I watched the Ed Sullivan dvds.
Lennon was asked in 77 if Ringo was the best drummer in the world ,he replied Ringo was not the best drummer in the Beatles Lucky guy should be more humble why do you think his current band has two drummers bring back the rope
Lennon was joking. If you knew anything about drumming, which you obviously don't, judging by the fact that you can't tell with your own ears, you would have no problem seeing how Ringo is leagues beyond Paul as a drummer. All of the people who matter have said Ringo is great. (Guess how much your uneducated opinion matters?) Only a handful of times was it a Ringo mistake that caused the Beatles to have to do it again. As far as the two drummers thing, that's actually a choice. Ringo likes playing with another drummer. That's not exclusive to Ringo, and it has nothing to do with skills. Again, if you actually knew anything about drumming, you would have been able to watch all the youtube videos and would quickly be able to see Ringo playing the songs, with no evidence of messing up, stopping, or being off time. Quit talking out your ass.
+Lynn Turman Actually Lennon did say that. You can find him saying it on video here. And he was not kidding or joking when he said it. That being the case, it's quite possible that John then turned around and praised Ringo, because John contradicted himself frequently it seems.
Barry richman where the F did you hear that ?! Anyone who has researched the beatles knows that when tensions were high , the other 3 counted him as the peacekeeper . Loyalty is his middle name ...
@barryrichman9424 he was known as always the least argumentative. The “ peacemaker” everyone valued and loved in the band. I’ve met , and heard Richard preform from less then three feet away from him. He has more talent than you will ever know. A quite brilliant, and exceptionally kind human being. Who always spreads peace, each and every time he speaks. Your shit talk, makes you look very stupid. So perhaps strive to be more then an uneducated judge and jury, with no evidence, simply the wish to spread hate, when evaluating another human beings character. Otherwise you will live a life alienating the kind, aggravating the intelligent, and eating all the words you said. If shit is to your liking, then by all means eat those words. If your fulfilled by informed, mindful, compassionate love, then I’d come from that place on my comments to others in future. Especially someone as exceptional as a 1 in 4 member of the greatest band of all time. Perspective I hope you grasp and spread in future days to come. For your own good.
