There is an issue that Riot has to think about that I have not seen many people touch on. I feel like a big reason of why new MMOs fail is because in the past people did not have access to guides and other information about the game, so it took them a while to figure everything out. These days a game gets figured out within days. People rush to end game, realize they've done everything in the span of a month and complain about there being no content. Riot has to figure out how to keep people busy without making the game too grindy
If you want MMO to work you need : 1) Dynamic punchy fight 2) Have a possibility to follow the main storylines in short chapters 45min/1h max 3) Have occasional gamer and competitive gamer option. 4) Have clear vision of what you want & commit to hit 100% 5) Have fast quest of 20 minutes with quick connection for most LoL base comunity is 40 now MMO"RPG" players are the same. 6) Easy with to group with friends and eventualy have bonus or at least feel rewarded for it. Understand that if you are not ready to give that people will stay on LoL, PoE, WoW, Fornite,FF...
The problem is the new generation sucks though... most of them are ipad kids. They can't use a keyboard or mouse, they can't use controllers. All they know how to do is play gacha and inhale literally garbage games
Well to be fair, they would get garbage games anyways. Most games are incomplete at launch, content is ripped out and later readded as DLC, they then tie updates to these DLCs, but some of these updates further break the game. When I was a kid, I was wondering how good it will be in the future to play games, so many factions and units for RTS games, so much customization options, abilities and places to explore... good shooters with greater depth. These things may slowly come yet, for now its only beautiful graphic, and ironically many stuff, which I wanted have not increased, but have been reduced. Boring small amount of factions and units for the sake of "balance" (which is anything, but balanced). RO2 and Arma 3 was great, but I am yet to see shooters evolve from there (or even reach that level). Today games are terrible, but that is what the market demand is, so that is what the players get. The new generation does not suck, which good game should they buy? Should I gift them old stuff wc3, dow? There are not many good games in sight for them.
Hopefully Riotcan step away from the hardcore MMO players and really embrace a design that will attract the masses. Unfortunately WoW is so endgame heavy that it is great for hardcore MMO fanatics, but they really need to dial in that leveling experience and the side content like professions. I hope Riot goes for something more similar to a Runescape skill system where one character can do everything. Allow the hardcore gamers to have their section, but allow non-combat skills to shine. A lot of MMOs make good fishing systems, and every other non-combat skill is forgotten.
