Fifty years from now, one in three people worldwide will live in slums like Tondo in the sprawling megacity of Manila- built without proper sanitation, lacking medical facilities, and packed to capacity.
Ricky Fuertes makes his living sorting through rubbish- tonnes of it, every day. He earns $2.50 a day scavenging so he can feed his family of five. But he faces his biggest challenge when his slum is burnt to the ground.
Nearby, Chito Barquin dives for his money. He normally makes a living working salvage jobs, but times are tough so he now dives in polluted waters for old tyres he can sell to feed his wife and children.
This six-part series follows residents of Manila's Tondo slum as they live, love, survive and aspire in some of the world's toughest living conditions.

Child mortality rate is obviously higher here. You can have one kid in developed nations and that kid will live to the age of 80. In the slum, that kid will not live beyond 5 yrs. That explains why poor people have more kids. Also you have to take into account that they cannot afford contraceptives like folks in the developed nations. If you earn less than a dollar a day, do you use the money for contraceptive or for food?
@ezpainful
@ezpainful 8 лет назад
Abeidy M. Contraceptives are given to them.. They choose not to use them because their religion does not allow it.
@WariorKitty
@WariorKitty 7 лет назад
Yeah but they are incredibly hard to get , you are looked down upon for getting them ; and often they are not good quality.It's not just their religon , getting effective contraceptives in Slums are increadibly difficult.You have to remember not all sociaty's are like 'ours' , they probably have a high rape rate too. Lot's of factors as to why people in poor countries have a lot of kids ; but at the end of the day who is more likely to survive , a baby here or a baby born in America?That's why people have 5 or six kids , because at least 1 will die.

I don't understand how rich people can just sit around and do NOTHING to help their fellow human beings. There is absolutely NO REASON/EXCUSE at all for this crap! These people didn't ASK to be born into these rotten and HORRIBLE circumstances....they just WERE and have every single card in the deck stacked against them!! There is PLENTY of surplus food and materials in this world to assist every living human being alive! Geez...what I throw away out of my fridge each week is appalling when people are STARVING! It's insane that some people have Millions and even BILLIONS and live like Kings and these people work their asses off and have absolutely NOTHING. So unfair!!! This world sucks sometimes!! So freaking sad and frustrating! I vow to help if I ever can!!!

I agree with you, here's the issue, nobody, absolutely nobody knows where to start, how to put something together. problem 1, every single one of them talks about food, money for food, rather then just give food they must do a few things, there needs to be an understanding that the main problem is too many are having too many kids and offer incentives for not having more then 2 children per household, this means they need to understand that contraceptive are not against God. 1. organize. 2. they can get a pound of rice for every 10 pounds of trash they bring per household 3 times a week, get the people to clean up the place. 3. get a way to recycle everything including organic materials to be used as compost. 4. build raised bed farms in the area, but heirloom seeds and plant food. 5. use mason jars to store food to keep it fresh, if possible teach them to can foods, extra fish from catches can be canned as well as vegetables since it didn't look like they had lot of refrigerators. 6. women can do canning in a community cannery. 7. men can be taught how to build things, fish, farm, and one at a time build proper infrastructure and fix homes and streets 1 block at a time. 8. change the education system to include trade schools, and other professions. 9. get local made products such as clothing and other goods made and bought locally. once you have food, and a way to keep the streets clean, better health means less problems. teach them to plan, without an understanding of how to plan there is no map to understand how to get where you want to be. make a free local bus service, a peso saved is a peso earned. there is much more, because as things grow there's always new jobs that come out of it, like a snowball effect.

+Joy Vradenburg So sitting and praying is going to solve this? These poor are obviously not happy. I'd be curious to see what the direct translation from the oldest scriptures really is. Sometimes the translation gets twisted. And in the original texts, there isn't a Devil. Through history it evolved in re-written versions derived from an angel sent down by "God" to collect dirt on people. Later the "Devil" was enhanced. There's a documentary on RU-vid that is very detailed about this. The governments could encourage fewer kids and more opportunity etc. etc. but they don't.

I've searched for the Barquin family through Facebook because I was so eager to know how they have been doing right now. Sadly, I have learned (based on what Evelyn/Weng posted read) that mang Chito died and his wife had another man (or was it the other way around). And Evelyn, which is probably the same age as me, 18, or a year older now-has a child of her own and is living with her boyfriend. This is truly heart breaking for me. And it's just so sad to think that there are a lot of people who work so hard but their pay isn't enough and there are those people who are only slacking their butts off and waste good money on things they don't necessarily need. Apparently, I am also a bit guilty about this, however watching documentations such as these made me realize that I should change my spending habits and learn the value of every penny I spend.

the trick is getting secured $ to someone you can trust so many miles away..I was able to help many of the victims of the Peruvian flood a few yrs back because I befriended a family that lived in a poor part of Lima..I've stayed with them on many occasions..so when I sent over $1000 with the help of my friends, he went to the local mercado's to buy at a further discount ( based on helping the flood victims) food, water and space blankets and were hand delivered to those people.. even then they had to be covert as the police and street thugs tried to take it from them... it's really difficult but with if the will is there and a local, trusted contact is on the ground, a lot can be accomplished ...

Worked 7 days a week at our Gastric station n my two brothers were mechanics working with our father. My father worked 7 days a week bought a house n settled . Lord always blesses his followers. I pray for all the hard workers of poor families 🙏🙏🙏🙏

+John Doe Africa is a continent and not a country. One country may be totally different from what you saw in the country you went to. Yes there is poverty in Africa and I have seen it first hand but this is of another level. In my country of origin they scavenge through copper ore slags and definitely not that rubbish piles. Neither are there dirty water walkways as soon as you leave your house. I have seen people that live in thatched roof houses and may survive on very basic standards but not the level I have seen in these videos. By the way they have three square meals consisting of breakfast which may be corn or cassava porridge, pap with vegetables or with fish and an evening meal of stuff they grow from their fields.

This is not just bout contraception. Many poor families have a lot of children because so many of them do not survive into adulthood. The whole situation is a lot more complicated than we know. It certainly is a vicious circle, and is extremely difficult to get out of, but not impossible.The spirit of these people is amazing, they don't have much to begin with, but even when this is destroyed such as in the fire, they still manage to look on the bright side.

My mom grew up in Tondo and knows first hand the experience of living in nightmareish poverty. I actually asked her the same question when I was a little girl while driving by the slums. She said she never smoked herself but cigarettes are so cheap and will leave your belly feeling full. While buying an actual meal will set you back a lot and what little you get to eat will still leave you feeling hungry.

@hal9000xxl
@hal9000xxl 8 лет назад
Give me one normal person anywhere int he world who wouldn't do that. Even the most cruel people who ever lived were willing to sacrifice everything for there offsprings. Generosity is when you help someone that is nothing to you. When you help him just because you want to and not because it is your son, daughter or grand child. Generosity has nothing to do with it. It is normal human reaction to sustain its own gene pool.
@kulupingerzi
