Tondo is Manila's biggest slum and some residents survive on just US$400 a year. Food vendors like Loida and Rado have come up with clever ways to make food that even the underprivileged can afford. These innovative cooks create crunchy and spicy chicken from leftovers, flavourful soup using unwanted pig intestines and affordable fried pork belly treats.

=====================
About Slumfood Millionaire: Embark on a mouth-watering journey through the slums of Asia, the last places on earth you would expect to find delicious foods. This unique documentary series celebrates the flavourful, and often unknown dishes made by talented cooks in the slums of Manila, Bangkok, Mumbai, Jakarta, Phnom Penh and Kota Kinabalu. Using cheap and overlooked ingredients, they cook up scrumptious dishes that are famous within the slums. Their passion and resilence prove that good food need not be expensive.

@Vice Vice because rich don't need to ask... They take. Money gives power too. That's why 99% of politicians (worldwide) have no worries about daily life issues that faced 70% of the planet population. Why to stay far from people who ask? A simple no is acceptable and respectable. Better to stay far from people who takes without asking, even if we forgive them because they are stupid ignorant.

You know what I just realized? That being vegan or vergetarian it's only for rich people or people way about the poverty line. Ofcourse you can live without meat or milk or eggs etc. when mostly you sit on your ass and don't do much hard labour , But people like these ones need that meat to survive , it's their only way of getting enough energy to survive. Look ,I care about animals and It breaks my heart knowing what they are going through ,but also It breaks my heart seeing people like this who's lifes are literally saved by consuming meat. And it truly disgusts me that some of us 1st world people shame other people for eating meat ,but we really don't realize how ungreatfull we are that we even have the option to be vegans or vegetarians.

I sincerely hope that the docu people also gave this kind lady some kind of financial royalty in exchange for the time she has generously given them. A lot of media people are so stingy that they don't compensate the subjects of their docu. An ABS CBN TV News crew once did a docu about a well-known vendor in PUP Sta Mesa in Manila. They documented the day-to-day activities of that vendor. After the docu aired on TV, the said vendor complained that the crew did not even bother to give her any amount as compensation for all her and her family's troubles during the making of the docu.

I like it when she was giving her advice to her nephew, "You have to study hard so that you will have a good future". Unlike majority of parents or guardians in the Philippines, they send their kids to school to study hoping they'll be the key to get them out of poverty. She's very kind and madiskarte.

If u know a little bit of tagalog and spanish you can easily use it with a mix of english. Pure tagalog now is just reading a poet with deep words that today's filipino forgotten but you can use tagalog, little bit of spanish and english mostly in metro manila but in other provinces they speak different dialects other than tagalog/english

There's also this dish in the slums called "pagpag" which roughly translates to "to dust/ shake off". It's left-over foods from restaurants/ fastfoods, usually chicken, that has been thrown away in the trash. They sift through it from the garbage dump, take up the edible parts, and cook it again into a new dish, served for very cheap prices, usually for the underprivileged. Those who serve pagpag are open that their dish came from "pagpag", and many still eat it because they are usually cooked very well, with the intention of killing off any bacteria in the heat. I personally haven't tried it yet, and I'd probably won't mind trying it out as long as I get to witness how it's prepared and deem it safe enough for me 😅

This is the proper way, more restaurants and businesses should get involved and donate or sell usable cuts. Could feed pigs and livestock, could be used in soup kitchens... a lot of food waste in fancy restaurants is because it isn't pretty enough. they can only use so much for soups and stocks, so it gets thrown away. Perfectly edible and safe food, thrown away because it cant be used in that particular business. Day old bread is another thing, maybe not the most nutritious and tasty food... but hungry birds in Winter wouldn't mind eating it, and croutons... but especially in places where people are hungry in the same neighborhood.

I have been lucky and blessed enough to visit the Philippines three times, and I have never in 26 other countries witness such super nice people that genuinely care about each other and even us dumbass sailors when we came into town and wanted to have a good time for a few pesos I mean it was ridiculous you know I could spend $20 and party all freaking night and eat, and the people were always so freaking nice it was amazing there's no other place on Earth that I know of like it, some would say there's other countries and they're probably is but I've only been to the Philippines as far as Asian type hot spots if you will all the rest for over in the Mediterranean or in the Caribbean and one down in Central America.

I’m glad hotels are allowed to sell meat they don’t need anymore. In the US, food establishments are required to throw out excess food at the end of each day. They’re not even allowed to give it to homeless shelters.
@CleverCreatives
@CleverCreatives 4 года назад
The same standards apply, the difference here is the boiled flavourless chicken carcasses are brought out of the hotel by someone who works or has a connection with the hotels. This actually isnt extreme, search for pagpag food, that's food literally from meat thrown in rubbish dumps.

@@TG-vk5uy Good point... i typed too fast... The approach to this show really bothered me. Cooked food also has a limited time period for consumption or re-use; it has to be safely stored and handled properly to minimize bacterial growth. The show really bothered me bec it lacked stewardship altogether. We're going to have a bunch of people going out there thinking re-cooking 2nd hand chicken is okay as a business model or thrill seekers going out to Tondo to try out Monok.
