Risky Purchase - Buying a Range Rover from an auction sight unseen.

This time I've really rolled the dice. I saw this Range Rover on a Copart auction and thought "What could possibly go wrong?" I bought it, sight unseen and had it delivered. This is the story of my latest idiotic idea! Will the gamble pay off?

If we were in a world of honesty, instead of the BS world we live in, I think it could be proved it is far more environmental to buy an old Range Rover and fix it, than to send it off the scrap yard and buy a Tesla.

Great review. I have owned a Td6 Vogue for 10 years and now upgraded to a 2011 TDV8 4.4 Autobiography. They are truly great cars and with such a support network on the forums and youtube most issues can be tackled relatively easily and affordably. Just avoid the main dealers.

Might be a good move to watch LR time on engine oil choice and oil pump issues. The benefit of a fully depreciated vehicle is hard to argue against and there's also a lot to be said for having another identical one for spares ! Best of luck with this project.

This sounds a lot like the voice of experience! If I take your advice I can't continue to be blissfully ignorant can I? There was an identical one not far from me and the MOT ran out two months ago. It's just sat at the side of the main road on a verge, slightly sagged at the front. I decided to go and see if I could find out more about it but it's gone! It was there the day before. Still no MOT and nowhere to be seen, I wonder what became of it; perhaps its blessing in disguise but also it would have been an excellent source of parts. C'est la vie.

hi mate. Loved the video. Have a 57 plate 2008 vogue with a very similar problem - passenger side cam cover crack which came to light after purchase. Cars' done 100k miles and cost me £6k pre fuel price madness. I have found an ebay cam cover for £150 which I have been fitting for 6 months lol! (involved a broken arm mid process!) I have done a gearbox refresh which cost me £200 for oil and filter and sump kit - not a too bad job if you have any skills - got oils to do transfer box and diffs (I'd recommend these jobs to). Good luck and I hope you keep it long term. Might want to look at replacing the air tank - I've got that in the boot ready to do at some point. My view is - got it cheapish and if it costs me £10k to get it well sorted - it's still cheap motoring. Depreciation on a £50k +car is the real killer IMO. If I were tempted to change - I'd go for a 4.2 supercharged - but that depends on your mileage!

Brilliant review and commentary on the RR ownership. I have had an L322 4.4 for just over a year now. Unfortunately, I encountered a problem related to the boost turbo, which cost a rather large chunk of money, but it was worth it in the end, love the car. It was good to hear comment on some of the things you have noticed as I have also noticed some of these, oh and welcome to the dark side. I maintain that ALL cars break and they all need some fixing, obviously some more than others but as long as you remember these are 70-80k cars new and the parts/maintenance doesn't depreciate like the car does and you can make peace with that, I'm sure you'll love it. Keep at least £1500 aside per year for repairs and with any luck you' won't need it all :-). Preventative maintenance is key though, spend the money up front on these and enjoy it. Best of luck and keep us updated if you do buy one.

What a great video and really well told. Cars today are so boring, they all look the same and even the electric ones are uninteresting and also very expensive. Character is so missing. I owned 3 Saabs and I loved them. They all had character and little quirks. I sold my last Saab 95 a few years back and I have to say I have never seen a car that I thought, now that looks good....until looking into the Range Rover. Now I'm addicted! They really look like they have character and presence. I think you had the right attitude. By one and have the about the same cash again for repairs. What car today could you buy for 6K with such style and opulence. I think the key to owning a used Range Rover is find one that has been serviced, looked after, one owner and then have a a local garage who can look after you and also put aside a couple of grand a year for the repairs . Great car and really good video by you 🙂

Unmatched tyres for me can be a deal breaker because without doubt the car owner or dealer are not prepared to spend money on it .That might sound stupid to some folk but its just what I think and without sounding like an ass hole I have not lost money on many cars to date. I am not a trader I just like the idea of buying a car using it improving it and then selling it on after a few years knowing its an ok car but I never ever undervalue my cars so they are never the cheapest but they are always an honest car I have never sold a car with a falt that I was aware of !

I just got an 06 RR Sport. Immaculate condition, huge stack of history and only 100k on the clock. Paid £4,000 for it. Personally, I prefer the sport to the vogue but I’m sure my opinion would change if I tried the vogue. You did good with that one and with the newer front end and the dash, it looks much newer that an 09! As long as you maintain it, it should go strong.

Great video, only thing is that the original bid is the market value by definition. At a regular auction when they say its worth more I point out that we have just proven its worth on the block. This has worked for me sometimes. I'd be interested in your thoughts. I wonder if you'd stuck at 1800 what would have happened?
@FatNFurious
@FatNFurious Год назад
It was my first time buying an auction car (successfully) so I don't have the experience to be able to impart any real knowledge on the subject. I did have the option of sticking with my original bid of course, however, I was also bidding on another older one that didn't make it's reserve and that particular car went through about 4 times before it sold so I doubt the seller of mine would have accepted the offer and just put it through again. I know I wouldn't have accepted that bid if the shoe were on the other foot. One of the beauties of this auction buy is that we will never know what the seller's situation or motives were, someone going through a bad patch may have had to cut their losses and accept a low-ball offer if pushed. If that had been the case then I'm glad they stuck to their guns on it for a while instead of taking another kicking. Whatever happens, I'm happy with what I paid overall for the car, I'm loving the RR experience and I'm glad to be able to say that I saved another old car. Your point about the market value is a good one and to an extent I agree, I've always maintained that they are worth whatever someone is willing to pay for them so in this case, I was willing to pay £3k and that also defines it's value. I suppose that by applying this logic, we are both right as my willingness to pay more than the hammer price couldn't be exploited at that moment. One day it was worth £1800, after the weekend it was worth £3000 and now I've fixed loads of issues it's worth £10,000, Ha, I WISH! I think there's loads of mileage in a debate on the values of all vehicles, for me personally it's about value for money and value doesn't just mean financial, it's about the experience overall too. Thank you for watching and commenting, I cannot believe the reception this video has received, it's very humbling.

Most likely problems you might incur are EGR valves front lower wishbones and air suspension issues? But all fixable if like me your going to own for the foreseeable future because as you pointed out, until you’ve owned one there’s just something about a LANDROVER, enjoy your new toy 👍

This is interesting to read as I actually found it quite a daunting car to work on to start with, I've never really been apprehensive about digging in but this one felt different. Yes it is a big heavy thing. There are lots of following on forums so nearly every job has a write up and there's a few aftermarket supliers of parts so costs can be kept lowish. Just remember if changing oil yourself there is two drain plugs on the 3.6.

Its AWD system so yet again more things to go wrong compared to normal cars. The fixes you have done seem fair play to me, good you sorted out some yourself. So I put a new battery on it, and I have never looked back. I’m now on my second new battery , and whenever spurious codes flag up, I just bung the battery on charge. I brought it for £6.5k and other than tyres it has cost me very little.

Personally I'd get it proper detailed/paint corrected/polished/ceramic coated/etc... If you choose to keep it, you'll have a car looking even better than now and easier to keep clean. If you choose to sell it, it will likely increase its value or at the very least make it easier to sell compared to cars still sporting the original paint with no love thrown at it. Only other thing I'd do would be to add the Android Auto/Carplay module thingy to the stock system as I appreciate the comfort it brings.

Check that the air suspension runs through the different ride heights without issue, paying attention to any undue noises from the bags or compressor. Just about everything in these is electrically controlled, so make sure it all works how it should. Budget time and money for anything that doesn’t. Check for engine leaks, and the condition of coolant and oil. Radiator expansion tanks can let go, look for tell-tale white streaks of coolant. Check the gearbox operates smoothly and shifts cleanly. If it doesn’t, it could indicate a big repair bill in the not-too-distant future. Ensure it has been serviced at some stage, as well. Check that low range engages and drives, and Hill Descent Control works. Rust isn’t generally a problem with these cars (aluminium panels), but look under the wheel arches and the rear tailgate. In our books, the most important thing you can check is the service history. Look for a complete one, done by either Land Rover dealerships or specialists. Old Jimbo’s local garage probably won’t cut it, unfortunately; these vehicles need fairly specific knowledge and skills to remain properly maintained. Pixel displays on the dashboard are notorious for letting go after a few years. DIYers can fix this for cheap, or expect to pay a fair bit of labour for somebody else. M62 V8s can leak a lot of oil from a dodgy valve cover gasket, and the diesel engine might need a replacement turbo. Check if it’s making excessive noises.
@MRFUCKOFF202
@MRFUCKOFF202 Год назад
Bizarre comment... He said he's servicing the gearbox, rust IS a problem, it's literally known for rust, pixel issues are known on pre-facelift cars, he doesn't have an M62. Do you literally just search "range rover" into RU-vid and paste this comment on every video without watching it?
@FatNFurious
@FatNFurious Год назад
Thanks for taking the time to write all of this, I think I've got it all covered (for now 🙂) Coolant leak is repaired, doesn't burn a drop of oil or drip it anywhere. Had the gearbox serviced and though I thought it was good before, it's like butter now! I did have the pan and filter replaced as well as a full flush which was almost £600 total but absolutely worth it for longevity. If I get a pixelated dash, I'll be crying in my beer as it has the full LCD/TFT or whatever tech is actually behind it. I'm not worried about the turbos, if they need replacing they'll get replaced, that's just part of owning a TD car I guess. All cars break and they all need servicing etc. but I do feel that people soon forget that although the car has devalued, the parts and maintenance doesn't so the expensive stuff quickly gets neglected.

I just picked up a 2007 3.6 TDV8 for £2500 , 6 speed auto box is slipping especially in 1st and slow to change up . EML is on and terrain control fault . I’m hoping a transmission flush and or fluid change will improve things . Everything else seems fine, air suspension , air conditioning , blower, seats , windows, central locking etc etc .wish me luck . I suppose worse case scenario is torque converter/ gearbox replacement .

I just bought one RRS 3.0 2011 and the only thing I can say - I love it! It looks fantastic, and driving with it is a true joy. Before I bought this one, I already made my decision on buying BMW Series 5, 2017, but... You know, the feeling is not comparable. RR for me is the winner and BMW, most likely will leave it for some time later. The RR I bought had many things done including a changed engine and many other things that were documented through pictures, but the worst thing here - it was done not in dealer service, so no service book. But anyway, I decided to trust the seller. Something to mention, the bottom of the car has quite many places and parts where it has rust, so I got an appointment already to treat these areas. Did you have rust at the bottom of the card? I hope to have a good experience with it as it is my first RR and feel like I will drive it for like a year or something and sell it. But who knows, maybe I will drive it much more?! :)

Don't the seats have electric heating - I think. It's a fine vehicle, looking for a 322 myself now but with the bmw engine (BMW diyer fanatic) and I know these cars and engines. Still will always spent money on them- yes. But go drive a Toyota or a Polo and see how happy that makes you feel 😅

I have the 4.4 with the 8 speed... I reckon it's a lot less growly from your description. Reference reliability, there are lots of high mileage examples and there are a lot of poorly maintained examples, without cursing myself I reckon I know which ones give the poor reliability figures. As a Range Rover owning colleague says, you've now got nowhere to go, you're in a full fat RR for the rest of your life!

Hi Fat And Furius, got the 2011 vogue se, love it. How did you remove the tint? Thanks
@FatNFurious
@FatNFurious Год назад
Fortunately (?) for me, the previous owner's dogs had scratched through it so I had a few places to start! Sadly, I don't know an easy method, personally I use a hairdryer or heat gun on low power to soften the glue a bit and peel it very slowly. If the weather is warm that will help and you can also use a mix of isopropyl alcohol and water to further soften the glue but of course the heat gun evaporates the alcohol almost immediately. Once it's off you can use a single edge razor blade and the water/alcohol solution to scrape the residue away. Rear door windows are really quick and easy but sadly the rear and rearmost side windows have the heater elements and antennas that mean you can't use the blade safely (at least I can't) so it's a scotch cloth if you're feeling brave or a lot of time with alcohol or brake cleaner and tissue or cloths to get the rest off. I did it on an ML320 and it was pretty easy, the RR was a lot more tiresome to do but I couldn't live with the scratches and once you start you are committed really aren't you? I expect it is down to the quality of the tint film that went on in the first place and of course assuming you haven't got factory privacy glass which of course you can't remove the tint from (not sure that really needed to be said, sorry).

They stick to their terms and conditions. Read them carefully would be my advice. My experience wasn't too bad overall but I have heard of people having issues when their expectations are different to the reality. It is a trade sale, things are cheap and they are that way for a reason.
