Somestimes the crowds attending these games are the story in and of themselves. The Rangers and Islanders certainly have a strong rivalry which I hope we see in the playoffs again soon.

What makes the Rangers-Islanders-Devils rivalry so intense is that the fans live among each other. In other rivalries, fans don’t really interact with the other fans in a day-to-day basis

There's really no rivalry between isles and devils fans. We usually get along pretty well although I have seen a couple fights at isles devils games. But other than that, both fanbases do the rangers chicken dance and the 1940 chants

@@takodahager4165 Yeah the Isles and Devils never played a super intense series like 1979 or 1994 which are needed to create rivalries. When one is good, the other is bad. Isles were a dynasty, when the Devils were a “Mickey Mouse” team. While the Devils had a generational goalie in Broduer, the Isles traded a generational goalie in Luongo. Even now, Isles are in a renaissance and the Devils are 🤷‍♂️

I'm from the Midwest, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I don't hate Rangers fans. I hate the Rangers more than any other hockey team, but not necessarily the fans. The Rangers are always treated like this venerable old Original 6 team worthy of the utmost respect, despite the fact that they've had by far the least success of the Original 6 teams, don't have anything close to a dynasty and when you bring up "great" Rangers, they're mostly skaters that primarily played for other teams. But still the league, the media and most hockey fans treat them like they're one of the most important teams. The Isles, on the other hand, were pretty much born by accident, but have one of professional sports greatest dynasties and all of their memorable "great"s are all home grown. The Rangers crowning achievement was having Gretzky play with them for a few years, while the Isles crowning achievement was defeating Gretzky's team for the Cup (yes I know they took it from us the next year). Yet, most people treat them like a joke, or worse, like they had no impact on the history of the NHL. Sure, the Isles have been lost in the woods for a while, but if we're being honest, most sports franchises who live long enough have a dark age that lasts a decade or two (or longer, just look at the Blackhawks and how they've rebounded). That said, none of that is the fault of your average Rangers fan. They were probably just born in Manhattan or got into hockey there or were introduced to hockey by a Rangers fan. And if there are asshole Rangers fans, they would have been asshole Islanders fans if circumstances were different.
@AweShiyte
@AweShiyte 4 года назад
Shannon, what I'm about to explain to you is the epitome of a New York Sports rivalry. Concerning your question on if this is all fun and games or is it that we really can't stand each other, it's the latter. You cannot play "Why can't we be friends?" throughout this rivalry without someone taking the vinyl record, or whatever kind of physical media device the hipsters are into today, and throwing it into some dumpster fire in an alleyway! I'm going to say this as an Islanders fan, we really don't like the other fanbase, and team. I don't want you to have these reasons in mind to hate the Rangers, in fact I like you being very neutral with this, however we have the impression that the Rangers are overrated because 1. They're an Original Six team, 2. They play in what is essentially a tourist attraction in Manhattan, and technically they're owned by that tourist attraction! We also have the impression that whenever Rangers fans chant "Potvin sucks!" (they still do it to this day) most of them don't even know who Denis Potvin was! Hell, I doubt some of them ever heard of Ulf Nilsson before, but I digress. Then there's the fact that it's the nature of New York Sports! How many Red Wings fans have to deal with Avalanche fans in Detroit on a daily basis in Detroit in the 90's and vice versa in Denver? Or how about the same question with Pens and Caps fans? I doubt that they have to deal with each other as much as Islanders and Rangers fans have to put up with each other. When you live in a densly populated area where there are two teams per sport, you're bound to have fans of both sides end up being neighbors. Even families are torn between fanbases. I'll go a step further. Despite many people in the media wanting to spin relations between Isles fans and Devils fans as "rivals", the truth couldn't be any more different. Because of the elephant in the boroughs, Islanders and Devils fans are very often sympathetic to each other. So to summarize it, we REALLY don't like each other.
@GregAllenF1
@GregAllenF1 4 года назад
The funny thing is that it is the older Rangers fans that feel this way towards the Islanders. Us younger Rangers fans tend to hate the Devils more and even Flyers. The Devils and their fans have tortured me in my life. Can’t say that the Islanders have ever been good enough to do the same. That is of course because the Islanders and Rangers have never been good at the same time since the early 90’s and I was not old enough to remember that. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like the Islanders, but one of my best and oldest friends is a huge Islanders fan. Not sure that happens if we were both born 10-20 years earlier haha
@AweShiyte
@AweShiyte 4 года назад
@@GregAllenF1 Honestly, I understand your position. I'll just say this: I never liked it when Rangers fans 'invade' our home arena. But fortunately for the foreseeable future, I really hope the Islanders and Rangers somehow meet in the Playoffs, and it's becoming very likely too. Both teams are having their arms races, alongside the rest of the Metro division and are seemingly becoming more competitive.

You just explained why Ottawa fans despise Toronto and Montreal! Ottawa fans are sick to death of the constant glorification of the Original Six teams as if they are the birthplace of hockey when the original Sens (1883-1934) existed and you NEVER EVER HEAR ABOUT THEM. They say we cannot honour that history with their banners in the rafters because it's not ours "officially." Both teams are called the Senators both teams played in Ottawa and I'm sorry the Great Depression happened and we did not have a team for close to 70 years. We've more than built our own history by making it to the Finals in 2007, winning a President's Trophy in 2003 and making the Conference Finals in 2003 and 2017. We've earned our stripes and been in the NHL for almost 30 years can we please get some respect? Ottawa has done more in recent years than Toronto yet we are treated as if we barely exist from the media and we hear about Austin Mathews 24/7 when he is not even as good as McDavid, Crosby or Ovechkin. Yet, if you live in Ottawa be prepared to constantly hear Toronto fans telling us our team sucks and how much better Sundin was than Alfie, when ALFIE ACTUALLY GOT HIS TEAM TO THE FINALS! Alfie is the first Swedish Captian to lead his team to the Stanley Cup Finals show some respect! And watch as every time it's a home game people from Toronto flood our arena because Ottawa and Toronto are so close and their fanbase is much larger they buy every ticket before Sens fans ever get a chance. They shame us in our own city and the worst part is THEY HAVE NOT EVEN MADE THE FINALS SINCE 1967! Guess what it was far easier to win the cup when there are only SIX teams! They have also not even sniffed the Conference Finals since 2002 and have not even made it past the first round since 2004! Yet you hear their fans and media glorify their team as if they are the second coming of the 1980's Oilers or Islanders, when they have provided they can't even make it out of the first round! At least Ottawa during our slump years of 2008-2017 made it to the conference finals and made it out of the second round on a fairly consistent basis. Do you hear Toronto fans praise Ottawa for their young stud talents like Tkachuk, Duclair, Batherson, Chabot or Connor Brown? Do you hear Toronto fans talk about the fact that they traded Connor Brown for Cody Ceci? Or even that Phaneuf was actually a playoff beast trapped on a Toronto squad that stank up the room? No, you don't hear that from Toronto fans. The new rule about the Battle of Ontario, you cannot mention the early 2000's until you can actually beat Boston and make it to the second round! Cause guess what Ottawa did that back in 2017! And you are not allowed to mention the Austin Matthews four-goal game to Sens fans unless you acknowledge that the Leafs lost that game! And finally how about you acknowledge that the Sens did more in the Post-Expansion NHL than the Leafs as they have not even made the show since 1967! Hey, fellow, Sens fans and Habs fans can join in for this new Toronto chant ready? "67! 67! 67! No cups since Expansion! No finals since Expansion! Can't beat Boston! 67! 67! 67! Sorry had to get that out of my system.
@AweShiyte
@AweShiyte 4 года назад
@@Wexter0083 Coming from an Isles fan's point of view, I hate Leafs fans just as much. Ever since Tavares left, Leaf fans left and right have been gloating about how John Tavares will win them the Stanley Cup yet they still couldn't beat Boston. Meanwhile, the team they took Tavares from, the ones that Toronto Media has picked to suck ass in the Metro, they clinched a playoff spot before Toronto, swept the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round all the while Toronto laid an egg in Boston.

Too young to really appreciate the Islanders rivalry because they've been bad for most of my life. But I did live in NJ in the 90s as a Rangers fan. I hated that team and fanbase at a level that blows away anything else in my sports experience. Still do, it's that deeply ingrained in me. I hope you make that video soon, there's plenty of ground to cover there. The "Potvin sucks!" chants indeed do still happen, which is weird to me. I even heard it at VGK-NYR games in Las Vegas. Now, the Rangers win in 1994 is right before I have any memories (sorry, going to hate all other O6 teams, esp being a Detroit fan). I simply enjoy NY rivalries, I guess. Anthony Induisi not regarding the rivalry, just recent history in general like for example the islanders haven’t done anything really since the 80’s were up as for the rangers they won their cup in 94’, made some deep runs in the playoffs consistently, won division titles, won a conference championship, won a presidents trophy in 2015 like the isles haven’t been close to stuff like that after the 80’s so that’s what he means by recent history......
@llllllll153
@llllllll153 2 года назад
@Vincent Daly it still has tbh, isles need modified seasons to be successful they don’t do much in a full 82 plus playoffs. Look what happens last time, lost 7 straight with 10-12 games left while other teams were on the rise bout to clinch a playoff spot but covid saved them. Why did this happen? It’s cause their washed up vets on the team which is almost the whole team gassed out towards the end. Once u reach a certain age u can sustain success for a whole season plus playoffs like they used to when they were on other teams, if they were successful at all with other teams too....

The Islanders 1978 loss in the QF round to The Leafs in 7 and the 1979 loss to the Rangers in the SF in 6 is what propelled them to win 19 straight playoff series and 4 cups in a row. These 2 losses taught them how to win and that even you have success in the regular season it is the playoff success that counts. Also you do not take anyone for granted because you can get beat just ask the Canadiens in 1980 against Minnesota in the QF after also winning 4 cups in a row.

Can't argue the Islander Ranger tension but it hasn't been much of a rivalry the last 30 years because the Islanders hardly make the playoffs. They've been holding on to that early 80s dynasty so hard its turning different shades of blue. This little run they put together the last couple of seasons is cute like their Gordon fisherman's jersey. The Rangers/Devils rivalry is much better especially because both teams have been more relevant over the last 25 years. Its adorable that the Islanders try though. It really is.

I remember the first time that I brought my wife to a Rangers Avs game here in Denver, and the chant started up, and my wife asked me who Potvin was, and what number he is on the ice so that she could see why the fans were booing him. I had to explain to her that Potvin was actually an Islander back in the day, and that its Ranger fans chanting it, not the Avs fans. She was amazed at how loud the Rangers fans are, and how long they hold a grudge. PPS best chant by Islanders fans was “1940” to remind the Rangers when they last won the Cup. That fell by the wayside in 1994. Surprised you didn't note the Ken Morrow goal that ended the '84 series-until Edmonton later that year, that game 5 vs the Rangers was one of only two times in the 19 straight playoff wins that the Isles were in a sudden death elimination situation (other was 1982 first round vs Penguins).

a big thing to mention is the class connotations also associated with the teams. Historically since the rangers have played in manhattan in MSG their tickets are very expansive compared to the Islanders, especially when the Islanders were playing in Nassau. As such more working class people(which long island is more working class, especially the area in which the nassau coliseum was built)opted to just go locally as the tickets were more affordable AND it was not all the way in the city. So by having a working class fan base who are going more due to accessibility initially rather than anything else they built a rabidly loyal fan base. It’s very similar with the Jets vs Giants dynamic or the Mets vs Yankees dynamic as well in NYC/LI, with the Mets/Jets/Islanders all historically being the more working class teams marketed to the Long Island market with all the teams playing in either Nassau or Queens at some point, where as the Rangers/Yankees/Giants have become over the years for the more wealthy and established in NY. Tourists for example are far more likely to have heard of the Rangers rather than the islanders, and are more likely to want to see them. Realistically Long Island sports fans often feel they are following the “real” sports teams for the area, IE teams that actually affordable for someone in the area to see, and aren’t mass marketed as much globally and are more concerned with the local NY/LI market. Add in the fact that everyone living in the BOS-WASH corridor is at most a few hour train ride/car ride away from one another and it’s a recipe for HUGE rivalries. If I really wanted to I could go see away games in Philly, MSG, NJ, all really easily and if i didn’t mind a little more logistic planning DC and Boston are easily within reach as well. UBS and MSG are less than 15 miles from one another to really give people some perspective. All of that being said, I have plenty of rangers fans as friends. It’s just sports at the end of the day lmao

1984 is particularly interesting. The Rangers were up 2-1in the series and up at home in game 4 only to see the Isles rally in the 3rd to win. Game the Rangers trailed late but got an illegal high stick goal in the final seconds to tie the game and send it to OT. Ken Morrow would win it for the Isles but could you imagine if the Rangers won in ot that 4 Cup dynasty would've been ended because of a goal that should've never counted

As a Rangers fan going back to 1971-72 the big enemy then were the Boston Bruins. The thing with the Islanders really begins in that first 3 game playoff series that J.P. Parise wins only seconds into overtime. Brad Park was an awesome defenseman but he had two major fuck ups in playoff series. The first was against the Bruins in the first game of the 72 playoff finals when after the Rangers had clawed their way back from a 5-1 deficit to 5-5 he lets the late Garnet 'Ace' Bailey (R.I.P.--died on 9-11 in the plane crash alongside Mark Bavis a former Rangers draftee) who was pretty much a 4th liner walk around him for the game winner and the second was he screwed up on the Parise goal. Anyway it's very true I don't like the Islanders at all but I'm also an equal opportunity despiser of teams in my division--that includes the Devils, Flyers, Penguins and Caps along with with Islanders. That said I'm watching the Rangers building what looks to be a monster team and the Pens, Caps and even the Islanders to a degree getting older and older. 2 to 4 years from now the Rangers and Flyers look to be the powerhouses in the division. Go away and fuck off coronavirus.

On Dec. 23, 2003 the New York Islanders were playing the Philadelphia Flyers. In the Christmas spirit the Islanders announced a promotion that morning which allowed free admittance to the game if you came dressed as Santa. My brother-in-law and I had already purchased tickets so we didn't bother to dress up. When we arrived at the Coliseum the parking lot was filled with Santas freely imbibing in holiday "Spirits". At the first intermission, the plan was for the 500 or so Santas to parade across the rink from the Zamboni entrance to the Isles locker room entrance which would take them along the goal line, a distance of about 85 feet. Well, the tuned up Santas broke out of line and started sliding around all over the rink. Then suddenly two of the Santas tear off their coats to reveal NY Rangers sweaters. It only took a couple of seconds for many of the Santas to realize this severe breech of conduct and begin beating the crap out of the Rangers guys. As the Santa Brawl was getting out of hand those Santas who weren't fighting were running around the ice belly flopping and sliding across the center ice logo like large red and white pucks. The PA announcer was repeating over and over, "Will the Santas please leave the ice surface. All Santas will be escorted from the building." There was no security on the ice except a couple of people from the Islanders promotions department. This went on for about 10 minutes until real security made their way onto the ice, rescued the Rangers Santas and finally cleared all the rest of the Santas off. It was truly the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life. I don't think I've ever laughed as hard for as long a period of time before or since.

(Sorry Shannon, but I can't stand the multiple times that you Bruins fans mock us for 2013 Game 7's fall of James Reimer) 2. "WE DON'T NEED YOU!" CAN GO DIE IN THE DEPTHS OF HELL! -Leafs fan. 3. I will not cheer for either team. 2 reasons: Booing Tavares (Islanders), and 1994 (Rangers) 4. Both teams need to take out the 2 worst Metro Division teams in the league so we don't have to deal with yet another PIT-WSH playoff series.
