Something about Myst and Riven keeps me coming back to listen to these soundtracks and revisit those specific feelings again. Just like so many of us, I was a kid in the 90s when playing them. I'm in my mid thirties now, and yet even to this day, (May 29, 2024) the games, movies, and other media l've since enjoyed, have not come close to delivering the same sense of enigmatic curiosity and otherworldly wonder. I remember not knowing what I was doing when playing these games either (probably because I was too young) and yet somehow nothing beats the feeling after placing the disc in tray, the game booting up, and experiencing an immediate sense of being transported into what felt like a completely different universe. It's as if Cyan created an entirely unique genre. Amazing.

This was closer to reading a book than playing a modern game. Glad I was there for that era!

Thanks for the upload. Played the game when I was young and now I am a senior citizen. Riven is in my thoughts always. Spend two days in my office on a Sat and Sun playing it to completion. It's not a game, it's me in Riven. The only computer game I ever played in my life, I was never interested in computer games, too busy an academic and corporate guy. It came with the PC my company purchase for me and there on my table was the disks it came with. The graphic on the cover look so esthetic and anything esthetics will get my attention. It got me and I enjoyed it, it stays in me....captivated, willingly.

One thing I noted while listening to this soundtrack, is that it's entirely on G key, which is the fifth musical note. If you played the game, you know what it means. The attention to detail in every aspect of this game is really outstanding. It's an amazing experience, and the soundtrack is one of the main reasons.

I remember being a 10-year-old kid and finding these music files in the local installation folder and just being enchanted by them. Burned them to a disc and would listen to them for hours while drawing and writing. Thanks for sharing these. Like rediscovering treasure.

Back listening to the Riven soundtrack for the 233rd time...

Hello fellow Cyantists, I thought I'd toss my own story onto the pile. I had the 5 cd version, and I used to play it so much, despite being utterly terrible at it. I couldn't figure out what to do. In my defense, I was younger then. I think I got it during the winter? I associate being cold with this game, regardless of when I played it. I'd always have a blanket and hot chocolate, cause Gehn had something like that. I think it could have either been hot chocolate or coffee, and made good arguments for both. Hot chocolate is easier to refine, but coffee would be more appropriate for the character. Anyway, if I look hard enough I could probably find the sketchbooks I filled, trying to understand this game. They would probably be incomprehensible, but I'm sure I made some interesting doodles of things I thought were important. Apparently next year, we are getting a Riven remake. I can't wait. Maybe I can beat this one. I will settle for getting to pet a Sunner.

This soundtrack is so damn good. It took a beautiful game and added an aura of mystery and even horror to it. The music was like a dose of irony: it hinted that bad things had happened here, even when the imagery seemed to suggest peace. The two, of course, some more together the more attention you pay to the background and story, and so the music itself acts like the narrator of the story, leading you on. Gives me chills whenever I listen to it, and it's a go to for me while I'm writing.

As I have aged, I have had to change hardware and operating systems, until I reached a point where I was unable to play this beautiful game. This has haunted me for many years now, however, I came across it, for an absolute steal, on the Steam platform the other day. I am now at peace, reliving the puzzles, long forgotten, and drifting with this soundtrack. I am so glad that 2 brothers had the energy and vision to bring this experience into the world.

So glad to see people still enjoying this music. I haven't ever found anything so atmospherically wonderful and comparative to this. It's haunting, slow, and the instrument choices evoke a sense of unease without being overly distracting. I love it

The very best music of all the Myst related games.

This game was so creepy to me as a little kid. I had the 5 CD version and I just remember the game in terms of the stages that took place on each disk. My dad, my sister and myself could never make it to disks 4 and 5, and looking back I realize I was WAY too young to figure out just what exactly this game was asking of it's players. I don't think I'll ever go back and finish it, but Riven still holds a place in my core memories and probably always will.

This game has been with me for practically my entire life. I remember playing this when I was super super young, and then revisiting it periodically throughout my life, and even still to this day. It still has that same sense of wonder and mystery, and even uneasiness today as it did back then. I remember back when I was a kindergartner or first grader, we did an art exercise of sorts where we had to paint nature. I painted that scene in Jungle Island past the wooden gates just before the fork in the road, where you could see those blue and black fungi, and the large dagger off to the left. It wasn't all that good in hindsight, you know cuz I was a young young kid, but that specific spot resonates with me. This game and its music are a masterpiece, and I cannot wait for the remastering of Riven

What a game, what a soundtrack! This was the only game I played where everything felt organic, felt like so natural. Puzzles, music, sceneries, everything. Not to mention it looked beautiful back in 1997 (and still looks good after almost 25 years).

I was playing this masterpiece with my father. The aesthetics of this game are mind blowing. The whole atmosphere of this game changed the way i think. Its not Just a game Its memories you never had but it was there...

I've hardly ever felt more peace than when I was playing the myst games. It's so strange when you find something you didn't look for and you are amazed of how much you actually needed it without even knowing. This whole myst universe had a huge impact on me when I was younger and still helps me to feel centered again if I loose myself in everyday struggles. Thank you.

i find it hilarious how robyns composing part of his work is often just like "a small thing he did on the side because there was no one else" while the whole myst suite is next level genious. simple, atmospheric, haunting and memorable as hell.

The creators and Robyn Miller did a fantastic job with this jewel of a game. They used a lot of symbolism throughout the game, especially with the music. If you’ve never played the game before, the music serves more purpose than just a soundtrack. It will actually tell you the storyline, and if you’ve paid close attention from the start of the game, there’s one point in the game where the music will give a sense of cognitive dissonance to guide you when making an important decision at a critical moment.

Played this during graduation year at my school. My best friend and me were solving puzzles over CB radio that we had beside our PC - the ones with the big CRT screens with hacked autoexec bats and config sys files ^^. We made notes like crazy and scribbles and shown them to each other trying to figure puzzles out at school. The whole thing was an unbelievable game with all its atmosphere, soundtrack and discoveries. Behind every corner you had something mystic and unknown. The Soundtrack dragged you into the whole experience and kept you in that world. You really laid your hand on that book when you decided to buy this game. And here we are - over 20 years later - my friend and I and many of you still listening and cherish these memories. I would say this game is what guided me to the path of my career doing 3D for living. Thanks to the Miller brothers and Cyan.

This game was so influential on my childhood. It still has a deep place in my heart, and I listen to the soundtrack regularly. Too lovely.

These games were ahead of their time.

Riven and Myst are those rare cases where they really feel like other worlds, and in the case of Riven, it ages very well. The old graphics of Myst not as much, but that's what the awesome remakes and remasters are for.

Even though I was born towards the end of the 1990s, I have fond childhood memories of PC games of the late 90s/early 2000s like Zoo Tycoon, SimCity 3000 & Red Alert 2. But even though I was born too late to ever know about Myst or Riven as a kid, I do sometimes wish I'd been born 5 or 10 years sooner. Something about PC gaming in the 1990s is so enthralling to me... the rise of 3D graphics, home computers, the early internet and new genres of gaming all combined to create an entire new digital frontier that seemed untameable.

Soundtrack was a masterpiece by itself. It added immensely to the experience.

I love this game. I did finish it with a little help of walkthrough though... Number 17 "Gehn speaks" is also used in background music in some of the who is the mole (wie is the mol series netherlands)

Perfect songs to read the subjective forms of the clouds and to follow with a tender eye the grooves of the stems of the trees; appreciate the complex writing of the nested branches, taste the colors of the decomposition of light into water droplets in a garden, and strongly feel the wet soil of ancestral forest to perceive the traces of animals from deep past 🍍🌴

Still patiently waiting for the islands of Riven to be recreated in VR.

As a kid I thought other cool experiences like this awaited me in the future. Surely the world was riddled with them! Sadly, Riven remained a very rare occurance. Imagine a world where people's value system allowed for more Riven's (be it games or anything else with such attention to detail and artistic sensibility, uniqueness and originality) to be created.

Sadly, I've yet to play Riven, but I have listened to the Myst soundtracks for many years, whenever I do programming. Couldn't ask for better music for that task... Thankfully, I'm going through Myst on the PSP and looking forward to Riven itself. My only regret is not having picked it up for the Sega Saturn when I had the chance, back in the day.

Es ist und bleibt für mich die beste Spiele Serie die es gibt. Tolle Umgebung, einmalige Landschaften und ein wundervoller Sphärischer Sound. Perfekte Spiele und das alles ohne andere töten zu müssen um im Spiel weiter zu kommen. Leider bekomme ich ausgerechnet "Riven" unter Windows 10 nicht zum laufen. Riven is the only computergame that i did start and never managed to complete. and its my favourite computergame by far. (oh, now that i think about it, i also never completed "baba is you" as well, wich is also one of my favourite games.)

Found out from this comments section; if you love Cyan worlds, you LOVE CYAN WORLDS! Haha. In reality, these were very quality games that got you to think. There is also something to be said for Riven and having to insert a new CD for a new island. It teaches patience, where most new games give you what you want NOW.

That "video" could certainly be improved by showing a shot of a location where a given theme "comes from" rather than showing ONE shot for nearly an hour, for all various locations associated with these themes...

If you found a linking book to Riven, and could live the rest of your days out there, would you do it? That's assuming of course it was a stable world and was never destroyed...
