In this episode of the Average Joe Fisherman, Grumpy John, Donny P, and I head to the Pere Marquette river with the intention of fly fishing for Salmon in Michigan. Normally found out in the Great Lakes, salmon run up the Pere Marquette and other rivers to spawn and die every fall making fall the perfect time to be salmon fishing in small rivers and creeks throughout Michigan. Fall salmon fishing in Michigan can be challenging however, especially when fly fishing for salmon as you will see. Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy the video.

What did u have for a rig as far as leader line weight and flies ?
@theaveragejoefisherman4287
@theaveragejoefisherman4287 3 года назад
Great question. I was using a 7ft bass leader tied to a yarn egg followed by two and a half ft of 6lb mono tied to a stone fly nymph or a streamer.

Hi Jay. I'd like to give you that info, but unfortunately other viewers would really be upset with me naming spots. I hope you understand. My suggestion would be to view the Trout Unlimited book on the river. It will list all of the access points. Cheers!

Nothing like flossing salmon in a foot of water. Those weren’t eats, they were flosses and snags

@@theaveragejoefisherman4287 there is no such thing as a bedding salmon eating an egg fly, anyone that has diligently fished for eats would know that. wether you knew it or not, ur flossing. If ur gonna do it don’t put it on youtube my man.

@theaveragejoefisherman4287 2 года назад
@@dominickjerovsek350 This has been debated by people forever. Yes, bedding females normally do not eat. Males on the other hand will. You and I will have to agree to disagree on that one. Either way, thank you for watching and happy New Year.

I have fished the PM for almost 20 years now and I’ve seen almost everything the good the ugly and for this to be called snagging like it has been in the comments is delusional, I’ve seen snagging at it’s worst and this NOT snagging

You and I are of the same mind Alexander. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.

You might be using a fly rod but this is NOT fly fishing. Call it what it is: Snagging WILD fish off their Redds. Stop perpetuating the lie that spawning fish are eating your fly! They aren't.
@theaveragejoefisherman4287
@theaveragejoefisherman4287 Год назад
Ah, the old debate, do they bite or don't they. Cleary some do. If that's not your experience, keep at it Will, you'll get better.
@Will-vo1lp
@Will-vo1lp Год назад
@@theaveragejoefisherman4287 Dude you’re targeting bedded spawned out fish in 1.5 feet of gin clear water with a ton of lead on your line. You’re snagging and so is everyone else targeting salmon/steelhead like this. Sad to see a blue ribbon trout stream get raped year after year by these tactics
@theaveragejoefisherman4287
@theaveragejoefisherman4287 Год назад
@@Will-vo1lp Actually, if you watch the video, I am targeting the males behind spawning fish. No different than what steelhead fisherman do. I search for aggressive fish that'll swing at a streamer or egg regardless if it's to eat or out of aggression. If that's not for you, that's cool. You could always lobby your congressman to try to get the rules changed.
@Will-vo1lp
@Will-vo1lp Год назад
@@theaveragejoefisherman4287 Thanks for the dialog. The fact that tactic is also used for steelhead in the spring makes my skin crawl. Think of all the fish that are snagged while trying to spawn and multiply that by 12+ hours of fishing pressure per day for 2 months in the spring and 2 months in the fall. Its simply not sustainable! If you want aggressive steelhead eats you should be on targeting them in the fall and winter, not the spring when they are in full spawn mode. The brown trout bite is incredible during both salmon and steelhead runs due to the amount of egg roll in the system. Try targeting browns on your 5wt this fall, I can guarantee you will find the experience more rewarding than targeting spawned out salmon. Unfortunately, the DNR cares more about selling fishing licenses than protecting the resource. Personally, I would love to see this section of river become "fly fishing only" and have a ban on all level lines.
@theaveragejoefisherman4287
@theaveragejoefisherman4287 Год назад
@@Will-vo1lp Happy to have a dialog. In fact, I believe our country needs more people willing to having a conversation about opposing views instead of the way things are currently being handled. That section of the PM is flies only, and, as a viewer pointed out earlier, most Great Lakes Salmon and Steelhead are hatchery plants and not in as much trouble as you may think they are. Most of them are not wild. That's probably the reason the current regulations are what they are. As for the Browns, check out some of my fall Brown Trout vids. There is nothing like trout fishing in the fall, but trout spawn in the fall, so some people find that offensive as well. Bass fishing is fire in the spring, but they too are usually spawning at that time and LOTS of people fish for them, including state wide tournaments. All a fisherman can do is follow the rules, practice catch and release , and, if you're like me, target the males, and look for aggressive fish. At the end of the day, I obviously do not take issue with fishing trout, steelhead, salmon, or bass during their spawn. I do my best to illicit a strike and enjoy the fight.
@skagitmaster3316
@skagitmaster3316 2 года назад
…and next up, we’ll be shooting ducks on the water. Yes, you’re legal but even average fishermen know to leave spawning fish alone. The king population is fragile enough.
@theaveragejoefisherman4287
@theaveragejoefisherman4287 2 года назад
I also fish the steelhead run when they come into the rivers to spawn. Oh, can't forget about bass in the spring when they come into to the shallow water of the Great Lakes to spawn. That bite is fire. Thank you for watching.
