Riversong was one of the most interesting characters in television only doctor who could pull something like a backwards timeline off and to think they had it all planned out back in season 4
+Zaphod “Memelord” Beeblebrox They didn't have it planned out. Moffat actively chose to give Amy the last name Pond to use the already existing character.
@@PrincessofEllabur Nope, because that's not how recurring characters work. Even if a character atomized the second they appeared in screen every instance of them shown on the show after that counts as them "recurring".
River's life is so confusing. As she gets older and her future grows, the Doctor gets younger and his future hasn't even quite begun. Quite honestly, I think her life is the most intricately written story ever. It was planned YEARS before her real adventure even began. It was planned YEARS before the next Doctor regenerated. Years and years of actually character planning to create just a single story! It just shows how much attention to detail and correct storylines and time travel/time lines the writers can actually comprehend and construct. That's on of my favorite things from the show, because everything connects so well in the end that you basically slap yourself for not knowing it sooner. Throws you for a loop, but a hell of a good one!
Really? I find that view hard to swallow. It was so detailed. So many tiny details woven in so far in advance that when yo go back and watch it again it's quite insane how much clear planning went into it.
I loved the concept and the complexity of the story, but I thought Alex Kingston was wrong for the part. Her personality and the Doctor’s shouldn’t really get on, since he hates guns and people knowing more about something than he does.
That was rivers personality though...she was a psychopathic murderer, how do you expect her to act? Alex was great for the part, she made her performance believable.
literally who dislikes river song. also the doctor doesnt hate guns, thats more of a front, he just hates what hes capable of doing with a gun, he HAS been a war hero after all. Its why he prefers talking, because even without a gun he can do so much damage.
The first time when you see River dying in that episode on the 4th season you think: "oh that is sad." And when you finally know her whole story and you watch that episode again you think:"oh nooooo why. This is realy realy saaad. God noo!!"
Sophie Prinz IKR! I want to cry hard... >.< I wish at the final episode (the 13th doctor; current and last) would revive her (Probably can't sadly...) or even better, go with her... THAT WOULD BE THE BEST DOCTOR WHO ENDING EVER!
Actually in the right order (of her timeline, not the episodes) her last words were “goodbye sweetie” when she came back as a ghost after she had already died in the library
@@myrrthes Personally I would not count that. I think the original comment, and how I'd like to see it, would be River's first and last words to the Doctor. But now since I know her last words as a 'ghost' are "Goodbye Sweetie" and her first are "Hello Sweetie"... I'm unsure if I want to have the true first and last words or the first and last words River said to the doctor as the answer. Both are so sweet and heartbreaking. The true words are backwards for the Doctor's timeline with her, which makes it fucking sad, but her last words to the Doctor makes it like a last-ditch effort to laugh off her inevitable fate- holy shit I can't stop rambling no idea where I was going with this, Doctor Who is a sad ass series in general.
River Song was the most amazing thing that could have ever happened to this show. When you watch her whole story laid out in front of you like this, it makes you have those "oh yeah I remember that!" moments. It was confusing, seeing some of her past and some of her future completely out of order, but in the end, it all makes sense, and it's the most amazing thing. This show is great in so many ways, but so much effort was put into the River Song story, and I think it was the most great thing about Doctor Who.
I can't watch The Library anymore without going into fits. Hell, I can't watch most of the early Doctor/River scenes without going into fits. I hope she gets reunited with him, someday. She's one of the only companions to truly know and accept all of him, regardless of his regenerations. It's kind of beautiful.
Dude with Series 11 episode... ah 9. Not going to spoil too much in case you haven't seen it, but let's say everyone's loved ones get shown except one of the female companions (Which was so weird btw) and the Doctor. I thought for sure River would be there for the Doctor and I was so pissed when it wasn't.
@@QuackUp 1. wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff, so the Doctor could literally bump into River before she dies. 2. You'd think with how much the show tries to show that weird human social standards don't matter (sexuality, gender, appearance, etc) the fans would catch on and learn to not care as much, or that the people watching would be people who are more open to that kind of stuff. I'm kind of surprised you've made it this far and kudos to you with all the gay stuff and the selfcest going on in this series already. How many times has the Doctor been kissed by another man? Or when the Master and Missy were aggressively flirting with each other and there was even a scene where Missy pushed the Master up against a wall and he literally asked if it was bad he was turned on by that. 3. I'm not really judging you, because personality, as long as you're not a straight up homophobe and pushing all your ideals onto everyone I don't mind what you think. I'm just genuinely surprised you've made it this far and are still not comfortable with a lesbian relationship (When Bill was gay and had a relationship with Heather, Clara was bi, River's actor said River would not give a shit, there was also the couple Vastra and Jenny, and well even though Jack is a man, he's gay. All of these are canon btw).
"...The day’s coming when I’ll look into that man’s eyes-my Doctor-and he won’t have the faintest idea who I am. And I think it’s going to kill me..." (River Song, The Impossible Astronaut)
Ah okay, that makes sense. When I realized River was Amy and Rory's daughter, I completely forgot about that little girl in New York, so it confused me how the baby went from her to Mels.
One thing River Sing didn't know was that as she aged the video quality would change from 1080 to standard definition. Now that's a real Doctor Who paradox.
Actually she says at her second regeneration that she would run her aging process backward "just to freak people out" ....that's script attention to detail to cover plot-cracks!
I usually don't like the doctor being romantic but I was crazy about River Song and in this case it worked. She's awesome , they're awesome and Matt Smith and Alex Kingston pulled it off brilliantly.
This is so horribly heartbreaking when you see it from her perspective....but so beautiful at the same time. For me Doctor Who is right up there with Harry Potter as some of the most incredible fiction I've ever come across because of characters and and stories like this. And really, this is just a background detail compared to the rest of the show. Completely and utterly beautiful.
+Blaze Flames (Knight of Heart) Well if she's a Timelord then she's blonde because their species genetics work differently than ours. If Timelords can change their face and every cell in their body it probably means their children NEVER end up looking like them. There would be no purpose for it. Because if the parent is dying and begins to regenerate, the child can't do the same. And if the child can't pick a face to resemble it's parents, then what the point in looking like them to begin with?
+Theawesomegamer samfred The 10th Doctor is the 11th regeneration and the 10th face to call himself "The Doctor". The War Doctor is the 9th regeneration of the Doctor but is not the Doctor because he denounced that title.
"Crash of the byzantium, have we done that?" I hate that line because surely she noticed that the Tenth Doctor is definitely NOT the same one as the one in the Crash of the Byzantium.
julia0315 Yup,I agree, also, she talked to Donna about how she knows her and what will happen to her, if River knew Donna was from his past, why would she think Ten is a future Doctor?
does anybody else find it almost heart breaking that when we see river song regenerate as a child we are also witnessing her heart stop for a moment? that she actually died right then and that's why she regenerate?
I think that. Or the fact that she was a literal, living breathing child, who was living completely alone to on the streets with no help until the point of death. DEATH. Like...that’s so heart breaking. If she didn’t have the ability to regenerate then she would just be a child who starved to death alone on the street. (She still technically is. Just came back) 💔
This put everything about River Song into a perspective that's often hard to understand to understand on the show, but now I see how tragic her life is. Imagine growing more in love with a person only for them to slowly not know you. Not to mention, her calm character. She doesn't fear what going to happen in the early episodes because she's already lived everything. She knows everything will work as long as she is by his side. My god, I love RIVER SONG!!
A though: The Doctor technically still hasn't told River his name yet. He said he did, but he lied about that and just said "look into my eyes". He also hasn't given her the sonic screwdriver. Knowing Moffat, if he can get Alex Kingston back he definitely will because he never leaves things like that open. Summary of that comment: River has to come back because The Doctor hasn't told her his name yet or given her the sonic.
Holy shit. Watching this in the correct order makes the library scene ten times more emotional. ESPECIALLY when you remember that the christmas special happened right before that episode.
The Angels Take Manhattan is missing. From what I can tell, it happens just before River's last meeting with the Doctor for her. Their timelines are mostly synced up at that point, except for River not having done the library yet, obviously.
It is a clever loop. The Eleventh Doctor had to figure out a way to save River Song. The Twelfth Doctor gave her the screwdriver. The Tenth Doctor saved her with it after seeing her die.
It's not, there's a mini episode where Matt's Doctor and River try to go on a date to see the singing towers, and he does have a suit, but they never actually go there. It was Capaldi who takes her to Darillium and gives her a screwdriver that would Tennant's Doctor use to save her.
One thing everyone seems to have completely missed is, River is missing a Regeneration. Her first Regeneration was in 1969, Amy was born in 1989 and River didn't start growing up with Amy until she met her at school. She didn't obtain the Vortex Manipulator from Dorium until she was River. Which means there's a missing 25 years between 1969 and 1994, where she had to have regenerated one other time; otherwise, she would've been an adult in her Early 30's when she first met Amy.
+Domihork there isn't any logic in dr who, to be honest the same came be apply to rose's dad episode or the fact that melody name. For a science fiction show sometime the show lack scientific facts to gain the viewers and create complex characters.
hey one thing is bugging me in the pandrica opens how would river know where was amys house was and secondly when the river is flying the tardis she says to the Doctor AN EXTERNAL FORCE IS FLYING THE TARDIS. the doctor says he will investtigate but he never did he was busy with mels and the newly weds (amy and rory) .what was the external force that flew it and where was it supposed to land and whaat caused the tardis to exploed please awnser this has being on mind since season 4
It WOULD be nice, but since they, um, _borrowed_ it from the BBC through the DVD extra it came from, I doubt they know how to add any more parts onto it. 😄 They should just be thankful the BBC hasn't said cease and desist and had it yanked off here. As should we, for that matter, LOL!
I love that The Angels Take Manhattan, The Husbands of River Song and The Name of The Doctor give River back some happiness, where the Doctor finally knows her as much as she knows him 😊😊
i cried rewatching silence of the library and forest of the dead oh my god river’s story arc is one of the most intricate of all in the whoniverse and it just gets me every time

Where is this audio of River explaining her timeline from? I've never heard this in any episode or mini-episode as far as I can remember. Or was this an extra on a DVD, I'm really not sure...
Ohkay i cried..... After looking at the events from River's point of view, i realize how awful would it have been for her. Always thinking about the next meeting with the love of your life knowing that he will always know you less than he did before. And a day will come when he won't even know who you are...
The events in Husbands of River Song makes it better, though. I mean, still as heartwrenching, but she gets time with him when they both know each other equally.
Aleah Ray I think she doesn't because the doctors future is her past so that means she doesn't exist yet or maybe I'm wrong because you know timey wimey.
when the part of her saying she good with a gun, give whole new meaning to Silence falls" now doesn't it.... i forgot she killed lots of them in that episode.
Another temporal perspective: The last words the Doctor speaks to River Song are unknown, being more than two decades after they first had Christmas dinner on Darillium, and before the events of "Doctor Mysterio." I like to think that he finally confessed his #love for her. .
After I watched all of the episodes with River in them I went back and watched the silence of the library, and I cried. I didn't cry when I first watched it....😢
when you realise from rivers perspective her husband is slowly becoming senile as he ages and forgets everything about her while becoming more mistrusting of her :O
7:35 One thing bothered me about this scene and River swinging around in a circle like that and shooting the Silence dudes. If she's spinning around how could she remember where the Silence dudes were that were behind her?
Russle t Davis ( sorry if I spelt his name Rong ) left gaps for the next writers to fill in ..... That's so clever ....... Like crash of the bizantium (if that's spelt write I will be surprised ) that's a good episode
I've been looking for something like this. It helps with putting the series together. Now I know where moffat is going. Thanks for uploading this now I can show moffat hater that he does tie things together ( a cluster fuck in a way) but yup.
I have been avoiding watching this video because I knew it would tear me apart emotionally. Why I chose to watch it at 2:30pm at work, I have no idea. At least I'm the only one in the office today. Thank you for doing this. It all makes much more sense to me now.
So I'm an idiot and never realized that she was the little girl in the space suit. And I just re watch those episodes. I'm feel ashamed of myself right now.
This is from a DVD extra, so they didn't put it together, just posted it - they should feel lucky the BBC hasn't noticed it yet and said cease and desist, LOL!
I love this. River is one of my favorite characters, I absolutely love her, but he story has always been kinda odd to me cause I couldn't make out what part of her life went where. Seeing the story in her timeline helps with that. Awesome.
There was a "Timeline" video on RU-vid once (since been deleted) that included much, well, better footage (in my opinion) than this. It included bits from the Name of the Doctor, and also video from the Webisodes (again, mostly deleted), including First Night and Last Night - incredible moments from Matt Smith and Alex Kingston that we may never see again. This one is well done, but not nearly the "passion and feels" that the other video had.
