Omg wow this was so unexpected! This is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. I made sure to watch it in theaters when it first came out bc I couldn’t miss out on the visuals.
Many point out why women should take their lives but just the daring of a women to jump into the fire instead of taken by an invader who killed their husbands is really appreciable . This is the crest jewel quality of women and I bow down to all those women for their courage and self respect . This is a real incident and even in Rajasthan Rani Padmavati is worshipped today ..that’s what makes her hero.

YES, that was the honourary pratice performed by the wives of Rajput warrior men (the Rajputs are Indian version of Spartans - they had very high standard as a rulling clan). This practice is called "Jauhar" involves self-immolation in masses including children to avoid enslavement by the enemy once they know their forces have been defeated. While it may sound very cruel pratice for woman and children the Rajput men themselves were very brave and lead by the code of "we will let our head cut but never bow down" they never ran way, always protected their kingdom or died trying.
Death is a better fate than sexual enslavement especially to men who killed your own husbands or brothers or fathers as for children better the funeral pyre then the enslavement.
I think there is a misunderstanding of what jauhar entails. It is a ritual taken on initiative only when there are no more chances to escape from the place. We are truly not sure what the protocol is when a kingdom falls (lack of documentation and relics) but jauhar was not that common considering the number of kingdoms that fell in Indian history. It is taken as a tool of oppression only during the British Rule due to the spread of misinformation and destruction of the schools of thought.
