He handled it perfectly. He didn’t abuse it. And didn’t even slam the dog. Didn’t lose focus. The issue is he did a non-verbal correction. Dealing with a suspect right there, it could be bad if he starts yelling commands and then confuses the suspect, or draws the other deputies attention away from the suspect. As a handler I agree, they probably knew it was an issue, but it’s also one to duplicate it in training to be able to correct it during training. They are animals, you can’t tell what they are thinking each time you try to recreate it. And you don’t want to stand there and get them amped up in the zone, and start sticking your legs, arms, and hands next to them to see if they will do it. All your doing is teasing them, and their natural reaction is to act on it, and then to correct them, when you made them do it in the first place is not going to do anything. His hands were completely clear and the dog just reached out to try to free himself, same as dogs do when they bite a leash. His dog was wagging the tail the entire time. Redirection happens, it’s just getting the timing right to correct it. They could have just came from another call and the dog was ramped up from that and didn’t get a bite. And instead of letting it play for a little, it had to go to this call.

As a mom, I don’t understand why discipline is viewed negatively. Punishment is needed and it’s just a fact of life. We have a large segment of society that fears that word which is bizarre to me. We live in a feel good society where the loudest voices comes from the weakest. This soon will change tho.
@Taureantiger888

And I’m not talking about abuse here. It’s just consequence/punishment is the result of bad actions. It just is.

agree, I mean look at kids nowadays at school. I got the belt, never done me any harm, it's life end of we need discipline
@Larry_Parada
@Larry_Parada 8 месяцев назад
Because we now live in a society (if you live in the US) where kids get their way and the parents don't hold them accountable so when they grow up they become the same way and view punishment as being cruel. Dogs in the wild don't believe in positive punishment. That simply does not exist. If you watch a wolf pack and a lower level wolf attack the leader, that wolf would be subdued until they stopped. If you watch momma with her pups it's the same way. Pup gets nasty and momma corrects it immediately. Discipline is a key factor in training.

Haz, the man, the legend!! This may be your best video ever!! Agree 100%, let's quit sugar coating everything and those who don't have the experience and don't know what they're talking about should STFU. Haz, I think the world of you, no doubt you're absolutely one of the best dog trainers I have ever seen. And yes, I do notice how happy ALL the dogs you train are when at your side. (One of the reasons I didn't adopt Kevin is knowing he may never adore anyone the way he adored you! Yeah, I'm the guy who sent you the video of my Caucasian acing an anatomy quiz.) Those dogs look at you like you're the center of the universe! Truly amazing to watch. Meanwhile, to be fair, I live in Riverside County and have trained at Adlerhorst with Dave Reaver and Riverside Sheriff K-9 officers. They are also excellent trainers. In fact, Dave Reaver was literally training police dogs before you were born and does not hesitate to correct them when necessary. I don't recognize the Deputy or the dog, but it certainly appears that they both may be a little green. And yes, despite being in California, this is a conservative county and Sheriff Chad Bianco is superb so it is unlikely the officer will face any discipline for his (correct) actions. Keep up the good work, love your videos Haz!!

The vendor you mentioned has some nice dogs with proven good record in apprehensions ...however he should focus more on fixing redirections in training....he does not mind getting sharp dogs and selling them to other dept ,so he should also equip them with skills to handle it better.

💯 on point. I saw this and was like: the officer did enough to get himself in the bull's eye of the media storm and not enough to successfully correct the behavior. I can tell the idea is not out of the dog. People that see the dog "happily wagging his tail" on his way to the cruiser still don't get what a dog that TRULY got the meaning of the correction is supposed to look like after being corrected. Its's a change that comes from the very core of his being. It's unmistakable once you see it and recognize it. There used to be a saying in horse training " when a horse bites you (or tries to bite you) you have 3 seconds to make him think he is going to die". That works with dogs too 😉

Spot on mate, he did a tremendous job at neutralising the dog and then taking him away, As a Mal owner, my wife and I had immediately flinched when we saw the dog bite the handler because we are well aware of how painful these bites are, our mal had accidentally bit both of us many times when we first introduced the ball and tug for him as a reward and we managed to stuff up the delivery where he accidentally caught our hand, so that was a split second accident with a few punctures and a week worth of pain, so imagine a semi targeted bite on a hand when the dog is in the zone 🤦🏻 The handler was absolutely super professional and let me tell you that if he didn’t do this correction , he would have ended up off duty for months, imagine what would have happened to this dog, when anyone corrects a working dog “he is literally a tool of the trade” everyone suddenly is upset and invokes cruelty laws!! 🤷🏻‍♂️ ignorance is a disease.

The suspect is very lucky the officer kept the dog from going after him! The suspect was the target! 🤦🏻‍♀️... I've had my dog redirect at me, and Haz you are 100% correct! I have scars from the holes I had! The dog was wanting to get the suspect and he is very lucky the officer was able to handle him...There was zero harm done to the dog. I watched another video on this and the consensus is that this dog is a new dog on the force. I pray that this officer isn't reprimanded for this. The general public is ignorant when it comes to high caliber dogs.

And these same people would immediately medicate this dog for “behaviour problem” which is sick. I see medication being recommended for things like leash reactivity for non working pet dogs wayyy too frequently. But if you so much bring up common sense balanced training- they ban you from commenting. But meds are allowed to be suggested by the average commentator. What in the bizarro world? They would rather sedate than actually communicate in the doggie language because it’s against their beliefs. These people are so lazy and sick.

As a resident of Riverside Co. CA - I woke up this morning to a 'Press Release' from RCRSO saying they are reviewing the incident. From the comments, I expected that something horrible happened. This is the first time I actually saw the video and OMG what are people thinking? I think the deputy acted with great restraint. Sheriff Chad Bianco is very fair and level headed, I'm counting on him. BTW, my 'pet' tried to join a dog fight, I grabbed her collar and she turned on me. My response was far more aggressive than that of the Deputy in question. This 120 lb woman flipped her and pinned that 65 lb dog to the ground by her neck. She'll never try that again. Thank you for your insight. It is appreciated.

This was one of the greatest monologue's on dog training I have ever heard. As a veteran military working dog handler (1981-1985) I agree with your assessment of the video. I myself have been bitten in training and strung the dog up by their leash till they passed out. You are no good to the dog if your tore up and in the hospital. The dog is a working dog and needs to be working, and to make that happen you have to be the animals boss plain and simple. Sounds rough to civilian's, not to the handler holding the leash. I am a new subscriber to Shield K9 and love the great job your doing

I achieved difficult dog as a amateur. It's my first one. And I did 2.5 months positive bullshit. My dog was abused before by previous owner and was growling on my parents just if they sat on my sofa. Luckily my mind was enlightened and I turned into real training. And yes, I use punishment. But my dog is now very friendly and not growling on my parents anymore.😂❤ Just one difficult dog, my first dog in life changed my opinion about just positive force free training. Before I was too very much sensitive towards punishments in dog training. But why? Because I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT IT.😂

Haz, I couldn't agree with you more. Society is screwed. I'm a dire hard fan of strong dogs, and to be honest the caliber of dog I admire is almost non-existent nowadays. That is a light correction. Had it been me, he would have been body slammed on the pavement and my size 13 boot going into its rib cage and chest. I don't tolerate disrespect from dogs. People need to realize when dogs resolve issues amongst themselves they utilize teeth! TEETH!!! Teeth do more damage than fists or feet. People went to the Malinois because it possessed more drive than the German Shepherd; however, they realized it was more drive than they could handle. The Malinois was not designed to be a pet and should have been left in the hands of the few people that can handle and understand the breed. It kills me that the term "level headed" is used heavily as a top-3 adjective to describe police, military, and even protection dogs. When criminals start becoming level headed and bullets start becoming sociable that is when I will become concerned with whether s dog is level headed. I want a dog that can take care of business first and foremost.

More drive? 😆....a good gsd can do everything a mal does ,with even more intensity while being less hectic in its work or behavior ....big difference between being hectic and posessing more drive ...the nr of sub par mals and dutchies on various dept dont get talked enough...a good dog is a good dog ,its hard already nowadays to find a reliable dog for apprehension work whether its gsd or mal or dutchy...and the dogs you seek for ,are out there ...just need to know the right folks...also if ur gonna body slam and break a dog ribs for a simple frustration bite ,the damage would be so severe the dog may need a long lay off or get retired ,whoever taught u that as a correction method is a sub par trainer

I agree with your sentiments Haz. While not a trainer of anything but my own dogs from age 13, (given my age now, I was taught obedience the old fashion way, but I've kept learning and transforming), I know from experience what it's like to have those teeth coming at me and getting me. Thankfully I was an adult when I had to deal with aggression and biting. Not a little nip either, it was fast and quite furious and anyone with a wee bit of survival instincts, or dog experience, will react and it won't be with a cookie. It has to be stopped immediately. Stopping them isn't cruel, it's necessary. You don't have to be a professional trainer to know this. You are quite right, humanity has turned into a marshmallow. To criticize a man for reacting to stop his dog from continuing to bite him, is quite absurd, his reaction was pretty quick too. They are putting it in slow -mo to make what he did look bad. I learned the hard way how to deal with my 'hard', somewhat out of control dog and lived to tell about it. Would I be accused of animal cruelty today? Likely so, if that cop did. My dog, by the way, lived a full, happy bite free life afterward. It was a terrible first two years, but somewhat free sailing after that. Training I believe occurs for the life of the dog. Where were you 30 years ago Sheild K9.. ;-) You have more people than you think on your side. Your way simply makes sense to sane people... hoping others get their heads out if the sand or humanity doesn't have much hope.

I live in Riverside County and their sheriff's dept. has a track record of putting dogs to work that are not ready and when I say that I mean their dogs just all seem unfinished. I do not blame the dog I blame the trainers and handlers. I have also seen well-trained dogs paired with ill-equipped handlers where the dog is trying to do its job and the handler is giving the dog such chaotic mixed signals the outcome is a disaster. I have witnessed it firsthand. A perp. was hiding in a shed, and they sent the dog in after him (he was bent down hiding behind an old car) the guy kissed to the dog and the dog licked his face and wagged its tail. The dog did not alert so they called the dog back and looked elsewhere. The dogs they send to sniff out drugs and or search for something, those dogs will mark at anything because they want their reward. It is the Sheriff's fault 100%.

I trained at one of the largest LE canine facilities on the East Coast. Their narcotics dogs were atrocious. Very clearly were not proofed off of handler indicators. I'm former LE and I shudder to think how badly they screw people over with false probable cause by getting their dogs to give false indications at the handler's convenience. Very disappointing coming from extensive military and private security standards to see how low the canine handler teams were in LE. Very much a lowest common denominator and safeguards to certify undeserving teams.

That is a big part of the problem in many parts of the U.S. I train with K9 handlers, lived next to active duty LEO and am friends with a LEO who quit because of the politics involved to become a LE K9 handler within the depts. Haz also talks about putting 'control' on the dog. Most K9 handlers have bought into the whole "control is for sport dogs" idea that gets pushed. Plus, more malinois and dutch shepherds are being used, given to handlers that aren't well trained and they are getting bitten.

Started redirecting her frustration at the wait to pull … well we went and had a training ‘talk ‘ .. she didn’t do that anymore . Couldn’t have my pit grabbing me by the arm . Didn’t change her drive to pull . 50lbs dog . 3580lbs pull . 2nd only to a 80 lbs male that show.

The people that are offended by the honesty of this video are the same people whose kids are always in trouble and disrespectful towards authority, because they were never told “no”!

Haz thank you for educating people. I got bombarded with you re a mean one Mr Grinch because i said you arent allowed to get bit by your dog. I also said a lot of handers keep that shit a secret cause they are embarrassing. Also handlers dont get the time they need to really train and work shit out cause they gotta be out there. And you know what else this is just about hating on everything police do. We are creating a society where our police are second guessing themselves in every level now in K9. Its BS. This isnt a guy kicking punching or beating a dog to be a abusive.

My hat goes off to you, this world needs more people like you, speaking out, without being scared to be labeled as an abuser. Too many morons out there thinking everything is fixable with love and treats.

People personify dogs to their own detriment and they refuse to truly understand what a dog is or how to communicate with them. They're physical, nonverbal animals they don't think like us or behave like us. Yelling, coercing, and bribery don't do shit. You can't allow huge safety concerns like that just slide. In nature, if an animal knows it can fuck you up and you allow it to challenge or attack you, guess what's gonna happen next if not now then eventually. You're gonna get fucked up. They're amazing, beautiful, emotional, intelligent animals but just like with kids if you do nothing but bribe and coddle them they're gonna walk all over you because they won't respect you and because they can. If anything it's abusive to have no boundaries or corrections because you're just inviting them to test what they can get away with and then confusing them by giving no meaningful guidance or directives so they never know where they stand and become anxious and fearful and act out for attention.

People forget, that Malinois dogs are VERY TOUGH DOGS!!; with a very high strong spirit! Police dogs are chosen SPECIFICALLY, due to their "toughness". These dogs are WORKING DOGS!! Not a "lapdog"! I've heard about this, and just didn't wanted to watch an animal getting abused, so I've stayed away from that video. But if this is all that K9 officer did, then I don't understand what everyone is "bit-ing" about. People needs to GO TO DOG TRAINING!!; before they open their mouth! No wonder, why so many animals get sent to shelters... People need to EDUCATE themselves!; before getting a pet. I'm a horse trainer, and I've seen this ALOT unfortunately. People who blames the animal, when it's all the owner/handlers fault! It's the same with horses as with dogs.... YOU HAVE TO BE THEIR LEADER! Just look at, how horses and dogs behave in a "flock/pack". They all know WHO the leader is!; and they all feel safe and calm; knowing the "LEADER" knows best! ; and you HAVE TO be the leader for your pet! ❤😘 Phew!... sorry for the rant...; but these IGNORANT people, gets me SO UPSET! 😝 Love your channel and the GOOD SENSE! 🫠
