RLS 22 - Baldwin Handleset Thumb Thing Repair

In this video for the Residential Locksmith Starter Series we are going to repair the Baldwin Images Handleset Thumb Thing! NO rekeying, just a VERY common repair that is needed with these Baldwin Handlesets (Gripsets, Pitcher Handles, Etc)
I also think we are going to modify the previous videos in this series to reduce the length of the titles, so probably from here out each video will be titled RLS (Residential Locksmith Starter)

Good video Jason. Just a suggestion that I would have for getting off the rose at on the bottom where you use pliers. What I have found that works good for me for this is to keep from Mari in the finish is I take and wrap the jaws of my pliers with electrical tape this helps to keep from Marin the finish. Just thought I would share that tip.

I had to do a repair today on a Baldwin Manchester. Was a pain in the ass, the new stuff that came with the repair kit didn’t seem to work as good as the old parts, just had to fix the thumb paddle, the large plate that mounts the deadbot and inside lever was a pain. But I was able to finish the job in the end.

Installed one today, it was just like you posted except mine had been upgraded already, installed the new spring mechanism and was ready to finish. Somehow my little rosette is stuck to the bolt, I couldn’t get it loose so reattached the way bubba had done it, hated that but it works fine.

Thank you for the video I was very helpful I've had to do the thumb repair before. I have a question regarding the turn off on the inside of the door for the deadbolt it's wobbling loose. It still works to close the deadbolt but is there a fix to tighten that turn knob? Thankyou 🐟🐟

@@danjost8797 if it’s the separate deadbolt from the handle, there is a “toothed doodad” for lack of better terms that comes loose inside. Unscrew the two small Phillips screws and the thumbturn will come off. You will see the silver-ish color doodad that presses down onto the thumbturn. Wack it with a hammer and re-install

Really helpful video! One question: isn't the sloped side of the "tongue" (the piece that sticks out and engages with the striker plate in the door jamb) supposed to be facing the outside of the door, where the exterior handle is, vs the inside of the door, where the knob is?

It just depends on whether the door opens out or swings in to open, but yes the bevel needs to face towards the strike plate. It could be either way just depends on the swing of the door

I am yet to see one of these handle set issues. I wonder would it be a similar repair for Schlage, Kwikset etc?

My screw cap cover spins but doesn't come off. It just spins. What can I do, please?

with some handlesets the cap just presses on, if you don’t see a small gap where you can use a small head to “pop it off” then it sounds like your threaded cap is stripped. You may need to squeeze it tightly with pliers (which will damage the cap) so it will “bite” into the screw and you can just remove the cap & screw together. First make sure it isn’t just snapped on tho

@@selock Thank you! Turns out it was just a pop off after all. Looks like I have to order a repair kit since there's something broken on the inside. Too bad there's nowhere local to pick it up. Gotta go online and it'll take a week. Still better than spending $200 on a new set. Thanks again!

I've got Canterbury 85305 which is discontinued. The lock works fine the finish is off the inside round doorknob. Can I replace just the knob and if so which part number?

any of the knobs from that series will work (from my quick googling, yours isn't discontinued) but all of the Handlesets in that line uses the same knob, no interior thread

This is a great video!! Exactly what I was looking for as I have a brand new Schlage Camelot handle that needs installing. I have been hesitating to install it because the handle on the interior side does not have the dead bolt feature, something I would rather have some way to lock it from the inside without a key, or have it keyed on both side and still be able to use the thumb thing lever. Do you know If this type of handle can be converted to either a dead bolt or keyed in both sides? In either case I am not sure what type of mechanism would it take to do this. Do you happen to a have a video on something like that? Thanks a lot for making posting your awsome videos! Liked and subscribed!

I’m not sure what you are asking. Do you have a existing Baldwin Handleset like shown in this video and are trying to replace it with the Schlage? Box stores sell the bottom handle separate from the deadbolt now so you would need to purchase the deadbolt separately but the Handleset should have come with the interior knob or lever. If it didn’t I suggest you return it & purchase the correct replacement items or if you have a Baldwin then purchase the repair kit if yours isn’t working

If you sell enough locks you are able to get them from manufacturers :) they are also available for sale through some places. This one is from the 70’s-80’s era from Schlage directly
