You did a great job explain all the parts. Our front door thumb door opening completely fell apart outside. All parts were separated, but with your video all put back together.
I cannot thank you enough for actually opening up the door 'guts' here. This was such a super helpful video! You saved me so much time and money!! A locksmith wanted to charge us over $150 to fix the handle. With the help of your video I realized two screws had come out of their holes and one was completely missing. It cost 20 cents to replace the screw and 15 minutes of fixing once I found your video. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong until I watched this video. Then it was super simple to get it all back together and installed good as new for an 18 year old lock. Thank you.
Took my kwickset handle set apart last night and found the two screws completely removed. Took everything off the door for repair this morning. By time I got around to it, the parts were moved and my memory failed me as to where everything went. Your situation was exactly like mine and saved me so much time. Thank you for the great tutorial vid. God bless.
Mine had the two screws just sitting there when I removed the inside handle to see why it was slowly coming off, apparently they will work their way out over time! Could have been that! Loved this video though!
Thanks for the video. I used to be a locksmith decades ago in my 20's So I knew the latch needed to be replaced. but when I took off the front half with the lever and everything fell out before I could tell how it went back together I was thinking " Crap" . You saved me a lot of trouble. I looked for a diagram to put it all together and could not find one. I had no idea where the spring belonged or where that little gear fit in. thanks again!)
Thanks for posting. I removed my Kwikset from the door & the internal parts went everywhere. I put it back together with help of this video. I appreciate your efforts.
At first I thought that your video's were too long, but I must say that your videos are the most realistic one's regarding locksmithing thats available on RU-vid Thanks for the time that you have spent making them.
Nicely done video. Clear and concise, step by step instructions. Thanks for posting this video as I feel confident ripping apart my door handle again. This time I know what to look for.
Thank you so much for this information! Our thumb latch was not working. After watching your video, we were able to fix the problem very quickly. Sure enough... not only were those 2 screws loose.. they were completely out!
Great video - thank you!!! I fixed a family member's handleset where the thumb lever was not working properly by following the steps, which are, uninstalling the lockset, loosening the screws shown, repositioning the lockset components, and retightening the screws this time with Loctite. After that, you reinstall the lockset and it works like new with the thumb lever now responsive and working. I'm about to use this same video again as the same problem is developing on my own front dooor handleset, just like what happend at my family member's house. It seems like Kwikset has been shortcutting adding Loctite to the positioning screws during their manufacturing process. If they'd just do this, the Loctite would greatly reduce or perhaps even eliminate the apparent inevitability of needing to make this repair should you use your front door regularly like most people.
We get this problem so often that I have an entire section devoted to both latch mechanisms (the two post and weiser’s four post model) in the truck. The plastic cam that actuated the latch is made from plastic and becomes brittle during our Canadian winters. It’s a real PITA doing a lockout when that’s the issue.
This was incredibly helpful, thank you! I noticed my interior handle was loose, had some difficulty getting the interior cover plate off, then realized I pried too hard and the exterior thumb press stopped turning the latch (aka working). After three or four tries and this video finally got it fixed. none of the screws had Loctite on them, but there was some white crust on the floor? Also, there appeared to be small broken pieces of metal but the tabs were intact? I left the lower bolt in while dis-assembling but the upper mechanism just popped out, the screws were not engaged at all. I did the repair without Loctite, but now I think I should get some. My exterior handle has the thumb press in the upper position, but it works the same way. I think my kids have a tendency to jiggle the handles often and that loosens the small mechanism screws; wonder if they offer these with some kind of set screw or nut? better yet, a groove for the assembled mechanism pieces slide into, this way the screw just becomes a vertical set screw, and doesnt get jiggled/loosened
Hi Jason thanks for taking the time to do this video. Very educational and Informative. Thanks again. How did little Frank like being back in the shop ? Great to see him again, he has grown, since the last photo I saw.
I’ve ran across this problem numerous times. The other one I’ve seen a lot is those latches with the small “bar” you lift up to adjust backseat those fail a lot too where the actual latch disengages from whatever pulls it back inside of the latch body so you have to take the lock off the door and drill the latch body a bit and take a orange pick hook thingy and manually retract it. I love this channel so fun to watch and see someone doing the same shit I encounter
@@christopherfernandes4401 Thank you! We are DIY’ers and wanted to find the part to replace it ourselves but part is so difficult to find. I guess we could do what you did and hire a locksmith but that probably wasn’t much cheaper than buying a new handle. Thanks for your reply!
Dude, I'm lousy at most home repairs but you just saved me the cost of a new handle and/or a repairman in 15 minutes of work. Also whoever installed our handle years ago for the builder had the top spring sideways -- which is why it never really worked right from day one.
Problem is everyone thinks the blue material that comes on the threads of screws for locks etc is loc-tite. It isn't. It's a thread lubricant. So you can put in those soft screws without stripping out or rounding out the heads. Don't believe me ? Take one of the factory screws and tighten it into a nut. Then take another one and use actual Loc-tite on it. Check it the next day and see which one has more resistance. Do a little research and you will understand the way loc-tite works. You can't put it on a screw or bolt, throw it in a bag and then have that product sit on a shelf for however long it takes to sell it. Lubricants will last much longer in that environment.
I hace a baldwin front entry handle set im trying to remove for this reason , i can unscrew the "brass" bottom of handle from inside door , this model has a hole on the door knob cylinder. Phillips, or T15 fits but spins, is there a model with an allen key? Its 25 yrs old but cant get the door knob to pull off, i ve removed the screw above & below the bolt that would prevent the doorknob from being removed . I explained that as well as i could.... I was a video that says u have to push in the button on the knob cylinder wirh one hand & pull off the knob w/ the other hand , didnt really feel it " push in" when i tried this technique. I have taken pictures and theres definitely no screw , no flat or phillips head when i blow up the picture. If you get a chance i appreciate it. I feel dumb, because i feel this should be very simple. Thanks for your time .
Hello. I tried looking at your other videos but didnt find anything regarding my issues with this Kwikset where the thumb press won't retract the latch. I would appreciate your insight if possible
Another thing I’ve seen a lot on Schlage brand pitched handles is the roll pin works it’s way out which disengages the actual thumb press it’s funny how the different brands have different weaknesses
The part that you're pulling out at 2:53 is broken on my door. I can't seem to find a place to buy it, or the whole mechanism you have in your hands at this point. Any ideas? I'm not even sure what it's called to search for it. Thanks for any assistance.
Ive never seen this problem but I do usually see the thumbturn wear a groove in the latch where it goes through the latch body causing the latch to not retract all the way.
At 6:20 I can see a spring around the crescent thing. I'm missing that spring. Do you know where I can get a replacement spring without having to buy an entirely new handleset?
Had a complete blowout with my handle set. I was able to put everything back together with this video. I’m missing the spring though. Does anyone know the compression spring size?
Take 3: This Bostonian had to think like a good ole boy. The parallel to the floor handle was sticking @ 11+5 o'clock --does not got to 12. The inside door mechanism has sliding metal surface parts and spring(s). I Applied a liberal amount of silicon grease inside -- all I have, and worked it in and wiped off the excess = success + Thanks
any luck finding a source of those parts? the part that those loctite screws hold on snapped a lug. that part you're holding (5040086) is zinc or pot metal and not that great.
Something is usually too loose, or too tight. Why is it a 1/16th of a turn one way; lock works, but turn other way lock won't work... Seems like most of the time it's never quite tight enough to trust it not work itself loose with use. I agree, always use real Loctite(r). The Blue 242 [Medium Duty]. Even around the house it's handy. Just use it anytime you put something together and save the frustration of a rogue fastener coming loose in a weird inconvenient spot. - Sometimes I sneak in a little Purple [Light duty]. But that's between us... Shh! 😉 Although... For a more heavy usage application, needing more "Oomph" - Or just where maybe the Blue fails to perform for whatever reason ... Jump up to: Red 271 Red [Heavy Duty]. Be prepared though. Red 271; may need tools and quite possibly heat to remove.
I pretty much have the exact same pieces in the inside of my Kwikset door handle. My problem is, a piece of metal broke off the plate, where you screw the 2 small screws into. Now when I attempt to screw it back together, I can't. Does anyone know if they sell just the inside metal plate? It would save me from having to buy a whole new door handle. The metal plate that I'm referring to, is the one that he lifts up at 1:22 in the video.
Would you ever consider using red Loctite for the screws instead of blue? It would make sure that the screws never come loose. It amazes me that you could fix a Kwikset lock. I thought they were cheap and not repairable.
ahmadaamer6 I have several large bottles of red. Over a year ago I spent a lot of time filming a loctite video on red vs blue only to scrap it in the end. I put re-filming it on “my list” but I’ve never gotten back around to it. I guess I need to do that. I’m always hesitant to use red ;)
Hi thanks fir this video on taken it apart. I’m having a huge problem with Pella entry doors multi lock systems. I’m trying to put a standard lock but Pella has there own Pattern locking handle. If you have any idea on how to install a standard locking handle to work with there 3 bolt locking system it would help me great deal thanks
@@selock Wow really sorry but have you tried to do it?? I’m trying to install a smart lock the mounting bolts won’t line up is there way to reposition and weld new mounting bolts?? Or am I stuck buying there key handles?? Thanks
@@MrCarmelo1959 you cannot make a smart lock work on a three point period. You cannot change a door built with a three point to regular locks under normal circumstances. Choose another door for your smart lock
@@selock Wow sorry but you didn’t answer my question if you had done this before but you seem certain that it won’t work. Thanks sir but I will keep searching fir more experienced knowledge from someone else have a great day and thanks for your help
That’s not even close to the most common problem . Kwikset handlesets “wear” so fast, I’m tired of explaining it to home owners. The “C” shaped driver wears along with the latch always. Replace the latch “always” and pull the press fit driver out 1/8” to avoid the worn spot. . . Then tell the customer Kwikset sucks.
This non-techie gool ole boy is very good. Mane of these Tube videos are rather useless. My problem is inside handles sticking at 12 - 6 o'clock, suspect age and weak spring mechanism. China?
