not to sound dramatic but every time youjeen starts the chorus feels like my heart explodes ahhh! how not to feel this song?

I think that's probably one of the hardest parts being in a group is losing your individuality as a person and as a music artist. People who aren't familiar with BTS see the entire group as 1 person not 7 individuals. I mean what causes most groups to break up over time, it's usually 1 or more members wanting to become solo artists. And it's interesting when they go solo is usually when they are taken more seriously as music artists because they can be more personal with their music. I mean BTS get a lot of hate purely because they are a "boy band". One of the things that stood out to me when I started listening to BTS was I was shocked to learn all 7 members have solo songs on BTS albums. I had never heard a group do something like that before with every member. And that the members weren't confined to only work on BTS songs, they could do solo work separate from BTS too and there doesn't seem to be jealousy or big egos that get in the way. They are truly happy for each other's success. Also when it comes to BTS they have spent pretty much every day of their lives over the past 10 years together. Not just working, but living together. I love many people in my life but I wouldn't be able to spend that much time with them every single day without going nuts. I think this is a very important time for BTS as individuals to grow and learn on their own and learn who they are without the other 6 members always by their side and I hope they come back stronger and better than ever. I wish all 7 members nothing but success on their solo endeavors and that they get through their military service in good health. ARMY will be waiting for your return as 7 only when you are ready.

Thank you for your intelligent direct perceptive reaction. Best I've seen so far. Fame of this magnitude, any magnitude, is a double edged sword. To my mind, Namjoon with his 148 IQ is able to articulate the REALITY of an extraordinary rise to fame within the confines of the K-pop system with six other talented individuals. They gave up their individuality to form a cohesive whole. They did it beautifully and we fell in love with 7 boys.. They went through puberty and young adulthood in each other's pockets, without a chance to experience or know themselves individually. They were under intense scrutiny, couldn't even date. Everything was for music and performance as a group! I feel every word he wrote... and I feel the optimism even with the brutal truth, the bare bones of it all. Musically, lyrically, visually I love it more each time I watch. Masterpiece.

With each release, I am more and more convinced that they needed this time alone to rediscover themselves and their passion for music, before they reunite again. We can see the grow jhope had after his album and lollapalooza, same with Jin and now RM, we know Suga, Junkook, V and Jimin are working on their music too.

You hit on something that I've been thinking about a lot (between the sobs) every time I listen to this song: the positive and the negative. One piece of symbolism that grabbed me immediately was the purple flowers, the petals raining down on him increasingly until he's laying in a field of purple flowers, at peace. I felt that like, it's us. ARMY. Joon and all the guys have never held back on their love and gratitude toward us, and our love is part of his happy place. But then you see in the one transition where there are the pretty petals in the sun, and we switch over to that bleak landscape where there are hot embers flying at him and burning him. Our love hurts him on some level, I know, because it's HUGE and heavy and overwhelming. There are saesangs AND constant demands even from those who truly love them. He is the leader of the biggest pop group on Earth-- and they are no longer just 7 guys who live music, they've become lifelines for millions, icons, legends, an entire industry built around them that employs thousands, that creates **a measurable percentage** of their COUNTRY'S GDP. I mean, God, that's SO HEAVY. I know Joon feels that responsibility so deeply, too. And he truly cares about the millions of us who support them, so he cares about every word he says, every lyric he writes, because, as he said at Festa, he never wants to disappoint us. It guts me remembering him crying and saying, "I feel guilty even saying I need a rest." I feel all of that in this song. Man, I just want to give the kid a hug. I wish I could tell him that there are so many of us who support him no matter what he chooses to be or do. If he wants to publish handwritten poetry in little books, I'd be pre-ordering that sh and hyping it up to everyone. He's enough just as himself, and he's given us so much, he doesn't owe us a single thing. We just want him and all the others to be happy. This song just guts me.

i know that words like sadness, shackles, shadows etc scares army because we never want them to be in pain but despite them having had restrictions and limitations in their lives as famous people i don't believe they were (dangerously) miserable. i am very grateful that they have had the opportunity to, throughout their careers, have been comfortable enough to be honest about negative aspects of their lives, be it personal, professional or public.

i think it´s so brave of them so speak up and for the label to allow it. you wont hear this from other kpop artist maybe after they left the spotlight. i have heard stories about the company trying to make a member look bad on purpose to create drama and more attention to a group. it´s so wrong. but with BTS they never pretended to be someone else and the company loves them as people and want to help them it´s clear from everything they does for them its not about money.

The pretty orange-ish fireworks that you mentioned are traditional Korean fireworks called Nakhwa Nori (roughly translates as 'falling fire play'). It's part of a celebration for Buddha's birthday and symbolizes a wish for peace and prosperity for the people. Oaktree charcoal is hung from strings attached above and lit on fire which has the effect of making the falling fireworks look like sparkly pollen (hence, the apt analogy, flowerworks). Btw, RM mentioned that scene was all non-CGI and the hot firework bits kept on falling on his face, so he had a hard time filming the scene. 💜

Namjoon said that Wild Flower is so precious to him and that is why it is the album title track. Listening to it and watching his interviews make me realised how much more struggles he have been facing - been a center of the storm, navigating success with so many people readily welcome your fall and at the same time trying your hardest to be true to yourself. For me wild flower is that heart wrenching song where RM pour his confession into a song. I am glad that at the end he decided to be a wildflower, that continue to bloom freely for a long time. First things first, I’m really blown away by this Youjeen lass’ vocals and am really inspired to check out some Cherry Filter. As for Joon, this album has cut right through me and I think this was a really sensible choice for the title track. There are so many moments in this that made me take pause. When he is on stage surrounded by the crowd and the lights are everywhere , but the contrast between that brightness and the words he is speaking. Yeowch. So hard hitting. Definite parallels with the MV for Shadow too, but then the whole video resolves into a sense of peace. I hate the pain that was obviously felt, but maaaan, do I love the way it was expressed! I said to my friend that the line ‘I can’t go to the stars again’ hit me particularly hard, and she pointed out that it could be a deliberate reference to the ‘I’m in the stars tonight’ from Dynamite, which I’d not even considered but is an extra interesting thought to consider.

I do love that this song makes us feel a mix of emotions, positive and negative, and people can have different takeaways of what the resolution actually is. I agree with others' sentiments on here that ultimately, this is an important time for the members to grow and explore who they are individually, and the solo time will only make them that much stronger as a group (when they're ready to come back). But also want to add that I don't think the struggle he's talking about is necessarily about losing himself just because he's in a group, but more about the specific experience that BTS has had. They catapulted to crazy levels of success, way beyond anything they could have imagined. So my impression is that RM's struggle is more related to the impact of having all that fame and influence - the responsibility of that - and how the weight of constantly being in this "engine" that is BTS has affected his own aspirations now, more than it is about just not being able to express himself in the past (after all, BTS' artistic authenticity from the start, in contrast to other K-pop groups, is part of what drew people to them). And Joon did say that they had a plan for BTS until Map of the Soul, and after that they've been essentially winging it and adapting to uncertainties (pandemic, military enlistment). So I think after being nonstop for years until MOTS, they've now reached this point where they can take stock and reflect, and that's what we're seeing in the solo music. That's also my impression from the contrast between firework and flowerwork - he wants to be a wildflower that grows steadily and endures, rather than a firework that is showy but burns out quickly. It seems a lot like a struggle with intense fame, as well as a desire for stability and longevity. But that's just my own two cents!

RM has expressed deeply that being considered the voice of the group is an intense responsibility that feels wrong sometimes, amd perhaps grandiose. With that, his lyrics are Introspective and sad but not depressing as it pertains to the other 6 as he isnt speaking for them rn. This is RMs heart and mind finally brought to fruition . If there was ever a time to not project his lyrics on Indigo onto the other memebers, this is it 💜 its inspired, vulberable and honest. It seems like he's on the verge of achieving individuation which is incredible considering his work through his early 20s, into the Map of the Soul era, having to halt everything for 3 years during the pandemic to eventually reach his goal. He has been itching, waiting, and adjusting as needed. I bet he feels an added layer of accomplishment we may never understand. The universe is wild omg I just made myself cry igtg 😓🚶‍♀️

Yes, definitely bittersweet! You’ve said it. The whole album seems to be about this tension between social expectations/trappings of business (the stage, fireworks, hotel rooms, hectic meetings & tours) and being true to oneself, the quiet life in communion with nature (fields of wild flowers) and art (being human, as stressed by Yun) that he yearns for.

Once he mentioned having a problem with the diplomatic stuff. Imagine being a rapper who speaks out against societal injustice becoming the representative for the soft power of their nation. He must have felt muzzled and conflicted. He was also against performing so many English songs. I read that he felt as though BTS lost their voice when the company wanted them to continue performing English songs written by others. BTS needs direct interaction with the development of their music, they aren't just performers, they're creative artists who were brought together to tell their own stories.

Also this truly does all feel bittersweet, and their lyrics sound like they did feel trapped in a way in BTS, but i genuinely believe them when they say they want to be a team for a long time. I just think it'll be in a diff form. No murderous kpop schedule of 3 full albums a year, enough time to do their own thing, working together to find a common ground on what bts' voice will be... i think coldplay really made them believe in their ability to stay a team in the long run again. Just as artists together and not as an idol group in a perpetual grind. I do believe this isn't the end, and neither do they. (But if by 2025 they change their minds and decide not to regroup, I'd support that decision too, of course.)

yes the only term i could come up with when i first listened to this song was MASSIVELY BITTERSWEET, is like both BTS and ARMY became a double edged sword, we love them but our love can become overwhelming for them, to the point they feel guilty to express their exhaustion and their need to rest, their need to just grow into their own individual selves, and BTS becoming this massive name, their fame placed them naturally in such a high spot becoming the country's representatives, how not to feel lost? how not to feel shackled, Namjoon's graceful way with words and music turned this song into an absolute masterpiece, youjeen's voice is literally on the edge of raw and perfectly belted technique with so much passion, while he's spitting the most truthful bars, and the piano break... man oh man, and not only this song, the entire album is SO REAL. 💜

I think in his live he said he started writing this (or wrote it???) in 2019 so.. it's been a while! I know at least Lonely he wrote in April 2022 so a wide range of time to tell different stories. Also after June 14 they opened that door to let us see the dilemma they're facing.. and living in SK with all of what that represent. His interview with Pharrell also adds a lot of context abt this album and I suppose his weverse live did too, but didn't have subs yet so.. Didn't check today, I hope they'll add them asap

I don't know if this is about Namjoon not wanting to lose himself in, like, the ego of fame, and the power of celebrity. Rather he realized that the fame and responsibility that having this big name came with restricts him. He can't go out anywhere without worrying about being stalked or targeted, he probably doesn't have quite as much freedom to talk about and do the things he wants to because of how big a name he currently is. I've gotten the sense that Namjoon wants to be more outspoken politically and socially and stuff, much like he was at the beginning of his career, but with the demands on him right now and the limitations as they are, he just can't. I think that for a while now, based on what he was saying in Festa, he (and maybe the other members, but I'm not sure) have felt rather detached from his roots and where he came from and the message he was originally hoping to send, the work he was wanting to be doing. I honestly feel like Namjoon might use this break period to recede from things a little (thus the 'promise I'll return one day' line said on the stage while surrounded by the crowd) to just focus on finding himself and trying to make it more accessible to do the work he really wants to be doing (which may or may not even be in music). I remember being in the vlive chat room once years ago and Namjoon popped in and confessed to all of us that he was lonely and wished he could have friends. He then said that it was okay because we were all his friends and were there for him. Which is sweet but it broke my heart because, no, we're not equivalent to that - we shouldn't be. I guess that's a bit of an aside but what I want to say is you can feel the pain in this song and the same way that Hobi's album sounded like a confession of burnout and being absolutely exhausted and just not knowing where he would go from here, this feels like that for Namjoon - a coming clean of how unhappy he's been lately and a hopeful but apologetic message that things are going to change because he needs it. I just hope that wherever he's going, wherever any of them are, they find happiness.

Something important to know, this song was completed in 2019, before the Dynamite era and even before the release of Map Of The Soul 7, so it's about what he felt before 2019 and not about the fame they have after.. It's more a reflexion about his twenties, and him saying he will never follow what some tell him to be and realising the heavy responsability coming from everywhere on his shoulders, not from his fans and members, but mostly from medias, government, music industry.. and he will always stay true to himself in that open land and flower field.

as far as it being sad - RM told us he hopes we listen to the album in order and that it's the whole story of his twenties. so there's a whole lot of big feels in the album but it's a wide range. agree that this is tough for us to hear but the same way it's tough to hear that a friend has gone through something. rather than thinking he's totally losing his grip on life currently. it's incredible the way they he can make it so personal and i'm still not cringing at all like I have for some other artists that maybe weren't the level of poetic that kim namjoon is. so much respect for this man. thanks for the reaction!

That open land, no name part is in the song at the beginning and at the end for a reason, for sure. Given your thoughts i suspect the negative connotation of those lyrics sit at the start, but are positive and hopeful at the end.

:_) Full circle: I sent you Cherry Filter and Youjeen music almost 2 years ago and now here she is with him, the president T_T And yes, the song is his baby, he's released a lot of content so I don't want to spoil anything for you if you will check it later. Anyway, as sad and hurtful as all the situation is, he said this is an archive of his 20s, and to listen in order, so the last song kinda picks it up and brings us the feeling of "don't look back, you've done your best, you'll protect yourself from now on"! So I want to think that in Wildflower he's just creating art with things they have always in one way or the other touched upon: they are not celebrities, they don't like the fame, they just love making music, they love each other, but still they are 7 individuals (and that's what we see on stage, but also in things like Run BTS and other shows). It's all good. Hope you enjoy the rest of the album and the content he's put out as his very own way of promotion :)
