You thinking by ripping her guts (engines etc) out she can never sail again is a happy ending? They should have scuttled her and given her a dignified end.
Very emotional watching this, my Dad and Grandad worked in the yard where she was built, I pass it daily in my home town Clydebank. The bit where she got stuck at the infamous Dalmuir Bend on the River Clyde on her way down to the open sea, needing a bit of push and pull from the wee tugs, made me smile!
+liz autin Hi Liz, I sailed in her from New York to Southampton 1949 with my parents my mother was also a British War bride. I was born (1944)a stones throw away from were she was built (Clydebank) (1934) I visited her in Long Beach Cal. in the 80's. Standing on her decks yet again but this time wishing she was making more voyages across the Atlantic. She is still beautiful.
Carl Hardin, I was born the same year you were, in Milford, Delaware. And sailed on her with my parents and younger brother in 1951 when I was six (had turned 6 in late 1950) on our way back to South Africa, where I grew up. I still remember it. I’ve been fascinated with ships and was privileged to get to cross the Atlantic six times by ship and even more times by plane. ✈️ But nothing beats traveling by ship. 🛳
+Titanic Lover Yes they used to be so wonderful and beautifully designed - as a boy I was lucky to be taken on board the 1st. Queen Mary & Elizabeth, Nieuw Amsterdam and beautiful Andes -now the latest "ships" are monster shopping malls being pushed through the water, they can't begin to compare with the old liners - as a ship lover I absolutely hate them!
+Titanic Lover You should really visit her. She is the only saved real ocean liner of that era, and was also the second biggest of them all. Only Queen Elizabeth was bigger.
Your parents won't take you? How far do you live from her? Just go! I have been going to the queen Mary since I was 5 years old. I used to brag about her all the time and I remember kids in 1st grade made fun of me lol. I'm now 24 and as of last year I live one hour away. I go visit her at least once a week:) In fact I was there last night. She never gets old. Every time I enter I just take a long soft deep happy sigh. I love her more then anything.
The Queen Mary can not described as anything else but elegant and a thing of sheer beauty. In those days, ships were designed and built with character and elegant lines. Just watching this video makes me want to go back in time and experience her splendour. She is my personal favourite ship of all times. These days, ship design has moved toward putting the biggest hotel like structure atop an enormous hull for the largest profit margin. It is such a shame. Long live the elegant Ladies of the Sea..... they will be forever in my heart. Thanks so much for allowing me to enjoy your video.
How nice was to read your lines! My name is André and I am from Brazil. I am a lover of the old liners too but my favourite is the 1906 RMS Mauretania, also a Cunarder. I have the same wish as yours: to go back in time... My e-mail is alferroalves@gmail.com. I would love to receive some more lines from you about those wonderful ships from another era. It is not usual to see this kind of interest. My hobby is to build ship models and I am working wright now on a !:200 scale of the 1906 RMS Mauretania. It was a pleasure to read what you have posted. We share the same passion! My best regards.
Quite the most beautiful of them all - and so good to know that as she sailed off into her retirement it was not to the breakers yard but to a new life still bringing happiness to millions of visitors. A worthy sole survivor of the great age of ocean liners. Long may she continue - the pride of Clydebank, Scotland and California.
My Father served on both the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth, he always said that whilst they were both great ships the Queen Elizabeth never quite attained the same status as the Queen Mary (IHO)There is no doubt in my mind that the Queen Mary was the greatest and most famous ship ever to sail the Atlantic; truly a great ship amongst the great ships of their day.It would be fitting if Cunard who sold her for $3.45M were now to put their hand in their pocket and donate towards the refit she so desperately needs. She did after all serve them and the United Kingdom so well for so many years and during the darkest days of the second world war. She carried the Great and the Good, Royalty, Heads of Governments, Film Stars of the Golden age of Hollywood and many many other famous people. She has earned her place in history and this greatest of all ocean going liners should be preserved for future generations to marvel at the ship building and engineering skills that built her...
At least it's still extant. There were times when it was rumored Long Beach might scrap it, but they've managed to hang on. The ship's 84 years old now.
Honestly every time I see Queen Mary I just smile and I cannot take my smile away I just love her sooooo much. She is the best ship in the world and as everyone says she is in the heart of so many people and she’s in my heart as well and one day I hope to go see her because it would just be amazing to see such an amazing, beautiful ship. She’s the queen of the ocean and she’ll forever will be. And she’ll forever and ever be in my heart and I’ll never forget her. 🖤RMS Queen Mary Forever And🖤 🖤Ever🖤
What a wonderful video. Love the music. My husband and I got the honor to board The Queen Mary the other day to wander. We have a year pass. So much Yet to see. But as I have always had an appreciation for Old Ships, this give gives me a whole new Appreciation. I can't wait to go and see Her Again. I am. just so fascinated by this awesome Ship.
OlympicWS, to use an old-fashioned phrase, you have outdone yourself. Outstanding video. a banquet of footage and music for those who love ocean liners. And this video may create some new ocean liner enthusiasts!
Even permanently moored in Long Beach Harbor as a static hotel and museum she is still grand and regal, albeit badly in need of new paint. I have been privileged to spend several nights and days aboard her and each time I discover something else new and exciting. I don't think it is fair to compare newer cruise ships to her - they are horses of a different color, so to speak, and by virtue of her heritage QM will always rise above. It is a shame that we have lost so many of her contemporaries and I do hope that the S.S.United States is spared the scrap yard - but we need to keep in mind that no matter how much we love them - it is expensive to keep the old gals afloat even if they are able to earn part of their keep as hotels, and find it in our hearts to contribute to the cause as we are able. Long live RMS Queen Mary.! (I know it is not correct to refer to her as such any longer, but I just can't help myself!
+Jeff Blatter. Actually she needs more than new paint. She hasn't been out of water for 50 years and the hull under the waterline is in a bad condition. The size of these ships is the problem. Everything is expensive. Only a few drydocks are even big enough for them. Smaller ships are much easier and cheaper to take care of. For example the former ocean liner MV Doulos (built in 1914 in USA as a freighter named SS Messina). In october 2015 they literally pulled her out of water to become a hotel ship on dry land in Indonesia.
Jeff Blatter....."Long live RMS Queen Mary.! (I know it is not correct to refer to her as such any longer, but I just can't help myself! Why, what is she called now?
such a beautiful ship, I went there about 4 or 5 years ago, even at that age, I couldn't believe how magnificent she looked, breaks my heart that she isn't sailing anymore, modern day cruise ships are just ugly if you ask me.
Thank you for this lovely tribute to a gorgeous ship I've had the privilege of visiting numerous times. A special kudos to RMS Queen Mary today on the 80th anniversary of her maiden voyage.
Though I do love the Queen Mary, I've always had a sliver of resentment toward her because the Olympic, my favorite ship was scrapped to make way for her.
Documents prove the lst. Queen Mary was the most popular liner in the history of the trans-Atlantic route - quite an honour when you think of how many great ships were involved in that most prestigious crossing.
My father toured the RMS Queen Mary as a Teenager at the 1939-40 World's Fair in New York. In 1942 he sailed on the RMS Queen Elizabeth as his Troop Ship from San Francisco to India; he was in the US Army Air Corps and his duty for the duration of WWII was flying B-24 Liberator Heavy Bombers "Over the Hump" into China as well as Bombing-runs against the Japanese. In 1949 he sailed on the RMS Queen Mary from New York to England to attend a Summer-session at Oxford and came back to New York via the the RMS Mauretania II, affectionately known as, "the little Queen Elizabeth."
Love the old girl, my Grandad saw her in Southampton just before her maiden voyage and I saw her in Long Beach. One of the most beautiful ocean liners ever built.
Don't forget, she became a Hollywood Movie Star when she portrayed the leading roll of the SS Poseidon in that 1972 Blockbuster film, The Poseidon Adventure!
Awesome video, OlympicWS! I love it! Wonderful footage, wonderful music. It's beautiful! Did you know that she was in The Poseidon Adventure. You should watch it.
Thank you. OlympicWS, I saw your video of Chenobyl after watching this video of Queen Mary, I saw the video but don't understand. The text was Russian & I can neither speak nor read Russian. when you get the time, can you read the comment I made in that video? Can you give me the answers in English please? Thank you. I saw your video of the Andrea Doria, too. Powerfully moving.
I have a good memory when I walked aboard this beautiful ship.I think it should deserve repairs and set sail again. The crew members aboard the ship were so gentle with me.
olympic you are awsome you made this "past is present" you never forget the ships that travel on the oceans your channel its the best of the world . one more thing can you do how many time andrea doria left? hold be great you do to us that favor
If you’ve never been to the Queen Mary, please go see her while she’s still afloat. And I know I’m not alone saying this, but the ship absolutely feels alive. I’ll talk to her as I walk around her decks. I’m sure people think I’m crazy as hell but I don’t care. She’s a gem and I hope nothing happens to her in my lifetime.
I'm glad cunard actually embraced and utilized White stars clean lines on their ships, to this day even they seem to have continued to adore White Stars look of elegance in their ship lines, Queen Mary herself takes so much of the Olympic class's lines that it's breath taking every time I see a picture of her, the designers sure did a good job of paying homage to Titanic in building her, the sight that ship must have been when launched. shes the same weight as Yamato.
I had the chance to go to Los Angeles to pick up an Airport shuttle bus and we flew from Mid Contenental International Airport North of KC,MO. to LAX. Long Beech California is only about 20 miles South. We went when the Queen Mary and the Spruce Goose were both there.. The big dome that the Spruce Goose was in was there with the Goose inside. It's Monstrorously Huge. You can park a 727 Jetliner under either wing. There was a huge crowd of people climbing the stairs up to see in the cockp;it and look at it's huge interior. Ahh but the most appealing thing hands down was the Queen Mary Herself. Ir has a couple of nice resturants abord. One was called Sir Winston's. It was a first class resturant. If you wanted to eat there you needed to dress foremal. Fantastic. I got to go in and see the Captain they had working and he let me spin the wheel a couple of times. I was like a little kid. If you want, you can stay on the ship as it is Long Beech "Hotel Queen Mary now. I had a couple of drinks in the bar just below the wheelhouse whrere you can look out over her Bouw. There is nothing in the world more pleasing than Picadelly Circus, the shopping district behind the Captain's Cabin. She is absolutely Gorgeously Historic. There willl never be another like her. I like the idea of the new QM-2. It too is beautiful. They just couldn't name her the Queen Mary-2 becakuse there can never be anothere Queen Mary as they will never be able to put all the brass and most of all HISTORY in another ship. The Q-Mary-2 today is the largest operating "Ocean Liner" in the world today. Only Ocean Liners are designed to ply the rough North Atlantic. Cruise ships are too tall and can capsize in the huge ocean waves an Ocean Liner can handle. There was only one real Queen Mary and that is why they legally cannot build another Liner named after the Queen Mother "Queen Mary" who was the Mother of Queen Elizabeth of today.
Julianna Sukel, I definitely agree, it breaks my heart when one has to be scrapped, I went to long beach and saw the queen mary, it was a wonderful ship
Hello: First say the video is magnificent and great. The other thing is if you could know what are the names of the songs used for the documentary, they are truly spectacular. Thank you for having created. regards
All of today's passenger ships are cruise ships. Queen Mary was an ocean liner. Have you heard of the Queen Mary TWO? It's the only modern ocean liner and its just as beautiful as the old liners.
Connor Pusey Yes I know all of that, but time of ocean liners is still over. Traveling with QM 2 would still be more like on cruise ship as we have other means to get from spot A to B and that`s a plain. So if there is an ocean liner today, it kinda lost a purpose.
@exlibrisas. No it's not you - today's cruise suck compared to the great liners of the past. The QM 2 comes closest to the golden age (all the others look like condos being pushed through the water) but by comparison to the lst Q.M or Queen Elizabeth she is kitschy and cheap looking internally, more like a shopping mall than a real ship.
exlibrisas never could've said it better..... back then we hade to make everything by hand it was all the most luxurious and big but grand and each ship looked humble but now today the cruise business is one of the biggest and with that ships are completely technology based and so big and these bold bright colors....... I think that older ships are more memorable........
My father sailed from New York to Southampton on it in the fall of 1944, along with 15000 other US troops headed for France. He said their meals were served on deck in the swimming pool.
This was an AWES-MAZING tribute to the Queen Mary! She's my 2nd favorite ship besides the TITANIC. And just think, she's bigger than the TITANIC I heard. I have a big connection with the ship, and I love her so much. She a big part of Maritime history indeed, and she will continue her legacy and she will inspire the next generation of cruise ships around the world for years to come! I say Long Live the R.M.S Queen Mary!! Also, can I use the music in this video? I wonder if she'll ever set sail again, and I would be first in line to take a trip around the world on her. I would be there!
No, she won't ever sail again. 3 out of 4 of her engines have now been removed though the 4th will never run again. All of her boilers have been removed. She would probably not pass the Safety of Life at Sea regulations anymore, and it would cost far too much to re-engine and recommission her (at least £500 million.) She is a floating exhibit of the great liners of her day, but she will never go to sea again. But at least she is still here - her sister ship the Queen Elizabeth is no more and all the other great liners have gone - and we can go aboard and dream of what it would have been like to take her to sea. The grandest and most beautiful ocean liner of her day. Churchill once said that her contribution to the war effort was unparraleled by any other ship afloat at the time, and that single-handedly she probably helped shorten the war by at least 1 year. She is a truly proud and magnificent ship, and I know that will still be here 100 yrs to come for future generations to go and enjoy, if some essential maintenance is carried out. I would like to dine in the great stateroom, have my desert cooked at my table, and drink champagne until I have to be carried to one of her cabins.
OK, but that is not a big issue. It has probably been treated with an anti-corrosive agent to reduce rusting and wasting of the steelwork in the double-bottom tanks. Ordinarily she would have had 10-15,000 tonnes of fuel oil and fresh water in these tanks which would have provided additional stability which of course is no longer present. So they have been filled with thousands of tonnes of mud to bring her deeper into the water and put weight low down and lower her centre of gravity. What I wish to know is: where the buckling described on here has taken place? Is it in the main hull plating, or just in the superstructure. This is important! If it is the superstructure/accomodation, then it is not significant.
The Cunard Co. "ONLY" call their ships (not cruise liners at all." Only the Cunard liners are reserved to be called "Ocean Liners."all three of their Queens. (Cunard still operates the Queens but were actually bought out by a Cruise Liner Co.) But the Ocean Liners are known as Ocean Liners because of the way they are built, they are built for "trans Atlantic crossings." From Great Britain to the U. S. they are designed to follow the same crossing as the Titanic, Oceanic, Britannic etc. These last three I mention were all Sister Ship. Ocean liners. From Liverpool England to N. Y. that is the closest Great Britain is to the U. S.. These new "cruise liner boats "are huge" built much taller, but their hull are not as heavy and tall as the three Queens "as far as how tall they are, and how many passenger they can pack on for the love of money ONLY. They are not designed to cross the Atlantic Ocean which is the most dangerous Ocean to cross because of the ice flow and the huge unpredictable storms ships run into while crossing it. The Atlantic is the roughest Ocean to cross. Even though cheaper party boats are not designed to cross the Atlantic some cruise ships do cross it. But when you see how tall they are you realize that they are built top heavy. Makes them easy to capsize and many have done just that. No if I could cross I would want the largest Ocean Liner and that is the Queen Mary 2. The other two are the Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Victoria. However the QM-2 is the largest Ocean Liner in the world today. I only wish I could cross the Atlantic on her.
Actually QM2 is the only real active ocean liner in the world today. QV and QE are just extended Carnival Vista class cruise ships with reinforced bows. This doesn't make them real ocean liners and a trip on them is pretty "bumpy" in rough seas, compared to an ocean liner of the same size. I've read a true story about Queen Elizabeth 2's and Queen Victoria's tandem Atlantic crossing, I think it was at the beginning of 2008. They experienced a pretty heavy storm and it caused almost chaos onboard QV while the journey was still pretty smooth on QE2, even if QE2 is slightly shorter and narrower than QV.
Ahh the RMS queen mary. One of my favorite old ships. Can't believe the original is still around. I'll still love her. Not to mention the RMS queen mary 2. She's cool as well. But the original is way more better in my opinion. (Edit 9/9/2022): Dear god I forgot this comment was made lmao (I think I was 12 when I made this comment and now I’m like, 18 XD) Now all I see of this video is just pure nostalgia to me. I used to watch these types of videos all the time when I was younger. Brings me back to better times.
My first experience with the Queen Mary was earlier this year when I attended a conference on her. I was smitten. First time I've stayed at a "hotel" where I was reluctant to leave.
7:46 the guy all the way to the right would be Prime Minister after Churchill retired, he would last 18 months after starting a war in Egypt and was on several medications and had some drug addictions. Prime Minister Eden would retreat to Columbia and continue to do nothing. 7:53 the Duke of Windsor next to his wife, he was Queen Elizabeth’s Uncle and was king for a short time before abdicating the thrown just before his coronation so he could marry his wife, an American actress and had been previously divorced, the Cabinet didn’t allow of this marriage and he decided to step down so he could marry her, his brother Queen Elizabeth’s Father would become king in his place until his death where Elizabeth took his place as Queen
hats off to the british for building the most beautiful vessels ever.once upon a time britania really ruled the waves say for about a hundred years if it was a freighter or a ocean liner you mastered the seas lots of brave englishmen died in action.german submarines was a menace for the british fleet.latitude longitude problem was also solved by the british.brits will always be admired for this great britain yes.luv from usa.
