Mick Lynch, the general secretary of the RMT union, today said he is "optimistic" that a Labour government would deliver a better working situation.
He said he hasn't "met a government minister since January", adding that employers involved in the disputes have also stopped talking to staff.

Public services are just that, they provide a stable base for society to grow and prosper. They must be brought back into public ownership. At the moment we can see money being creamed off to mostly foreign CEOs and shareholders holders while the services are becoming a national disgrace.

Don't get me wrong, I actually quite like Mick Lynch. As a union leader he comes across as far more articulate and reasoned than many before him. However, there is no way that he would win a General Election as leader of a political party (whether that be Labour or otherwise). The British electorate tend to gravitate to the middle ground (2019 was an exception, but that was entirely about Brexit). That is why Starmer is polling so well. Don't forget, only four Labour leaders have EVER won a general election.

We need a political party that is 100% for the people of this country. We need politicians who put what's best for the country first, not what's good for their donors or themselves first. We have a lot of the wrong type of people in parliament, and they need to be removed. Any politician who is an honest politician would want it to be a crime to lie to the public if an MP. Any MP who wouldn't sign up to that needs removing from office. If they were honest themselves, they would have nothing to fear.

So refreshing to hear someone speak with honesty and openness on a politics show. Mick made a very telling point about Labour needing to put some clear red water between themselves and the Tories. I no longer know what, if anything, the Labour Party stands for, other than to be slightly better than the Tories. Labour seem to be firmly superglued to sitting on the fence over most issues, which is totally unacceptable to their traditional core voters like myself. Unless Starmer starts showing some boldness and clear principles, Labour will be in for some disappointments at a general election.

I'm a huge fan of Mick's and I love his plain-speaking style and the crystal clarity of his message delivery, but I think he displays a political naïveté that doesn't suit him when he talks about what Starmer's "got to do." Starmer's got ONE JOB at the moment and that's to win power for Labour at the next general election, which is what his Realpolitik is laser-focussed on. If he were to start saying all the things Mick suggests, (a) the Tory Client Media would slaughter him for it, and (b) the people who will actually decide the outcome of that election (ie swing voters in the key marginals, many of whom believe what they read in the pages of the Sun and the Daily Mail) might be scared off and you'd likely begin to see a narrowing of the gap in the polls, which would threaten to make our well-overdue delivery from Tory clutches less certain. That will be what Labour's private polling is telling them, or else Starmer would be saying something different. Never mind what the Labour leader SAYS, look at what the Labour Party DOES when they win power.
