A guy who reacts to being flipped off by getting out of his car and assaulting someone is not a person worth having in this world. She might have even saved other people from being physically abused as a result of defending herself.

It's hard for me to believe this is the only point in his life where his rage has created a dangerous situation.

Riding a motorcycle already puts you at a safety disadvantage when compared to automobiles. You never know what kind of a nut is behind the wheel either. Flipping someone off today might get you shot at freeway speeds no matter what kind of a vehicle you're using. What he did of course can't be justified. But I have a feeling that her flipping him off was the fuel that lit the fire in this clown. Maybe next time attempt to change lanes and let the "hot head" pass. That's a better option than having to kill someone, even if it was legally and morally justified. Her pulling the trigger saved her life. It will also probably haunt her for a very long time.

I always say after being flipped of. Is that and offer or a gesture. I hope it's a gesture because I've got a headache
@TheGhostWhisperer

Guess the one flipping someone off is worthless too. Act like a mature adult then you don't have to worry about pissing off the wrong one who just rather kill u. Dude using the finger is just as worthless. Rather someone deserves to die or not. Our own actions determine what possibilities could happen to our lives. So if some ahole flips someone off thinking hes a badass and that someone is the psycho to give the finger too and that person shoots and kills someone then i dont feel sorry for any of them acting like childish idiots

Having survived three deadly force encounters during my 30 year LEO career the PTSD symptoms Bre is describing are accurate. This is a courageous young woman and she was wise to decline all media requests for an interview. Never trust anyone from the media, they’ll put their own spin on things and could ruin your life in the process.

Sounds like somebody doesn't like honest reporting on shitty cops. I know in that 30 years of being a cop, you saw your "brothers" violate rights, lie on reports, and cheat the system, but said nothing. Funny thing about those one or two bad apples. When you cover for them, they spoil the whole cart. ACAB. This includes you.

@cl9107
@cl9107 3 года назад
He put her in handcuffs for safety until he could assess the situation. Remember she called 911 stating that she just shot someone so the officer responding knew that she had the gun and so it's perfectly understandable that he would cuff her and secure the gun first since the other person was wounded and lying on the ground. So given time the truth came out after all the witnesses were interviewed. Even though she was in the right to protect herself I am still not convinced that her life was in danger to the point to where she needed to use deadly force. This world would be a much more dangerous place if everybody ran around packing guns. It's also concerning to me that you would sit there with a shoulder harness on with your gun in it showing off that way during a RU-vid interview. Do you really need to wear it during the interview like that? Are you afraid she's going to shoot you? I think that packing a gun for you is more than just being afraid in the world especially if you feel the need to where it within view during a RU-vid interview. I would be afraid of you because I don't think that you are quite all there. You think you have the right to take a life? Nobody has the right to take a life. And unfortunately whether this young woman understands this right now or not she will have to live the rest of her life knowing that she killed somebody. She took somebody's life. She will forever ask the question 'could it have been another way?'

That was a very scary incident. I happened to see the incident and stopped to help. The whole thing happened in about 30 seconds start to finish. There was no time to help Aubrey due to traffic and how quickly things escalated. I wish I could have done more. The memory of it all still haunts me and I wasn't injured.
@SquidTips
@SquidTips 6 лет назад
Thanks for speaking out. Your reaction seems very understandable, as I don’t think on the day to day drive we are in a headspace where we expect something like this to happen. It’s also not something anyone can reasonably be prepared to handle such an uncommon and crazy situation.
@betherfany1
@betherfany1 6 лет назад
Hindsight, I was CRAZY for stopping. It haunted me for a long time because there are so many things I would have done differently. I did not see the actual shooting, I saw what led up to the altercation when they were still driving and when they got into the physical fight but I did not see anything after the guard rail/median situation because there was a bus in the way. I heard the gun go off. I wrote my statement like everyone else. I think in total there were probably 6 people who stopped. I happened to be right behind Aubrey's bike when all the movement of cars took place. So I had a first hand view of her sitting on the ground before the cops showed up and then after. Honestly I didn't know who was at fault or what instigated the who thing but after hearing Aubrey's story it makes a lot of sense. I think in those situations you breeze past some details others notice. After putting the pieces together I can understand why no one was charged. I am really glad I got to hear Aubrey's story because it puts into perspective my experience in that situation.

BM H Who are you to tell someone when they felt their life was in danger? Your ‘Instincts’ sound a lot like personal biases that you’ve reimagined the entire scenario through to come to a conclusion, rather than facts.

BM H It’s crazy what you’re mind will think and not think when you’re adrenalized. I don’t know if she’s telling the truth but her statement doesn’t seem all that fishy to me. I’ve not been in the situation where I needed to defend my life with a gun. I have had enough situations where I was in fear for my life and highly adrenalized to know you don’t know what you’re going to be thinking or doing until you’re there. Sometimes you forget obvious things. Other times you surprise yourself with what you think of in a split second.

Man, that poor girl. Wishing Bree the best in her recovery. Squidtips- I’ve been watching your your case against KC, best of luck man! As a newer member of the motorcycle community I really like your content, you break things down in an intelligent manner and present lucid reasoning behind whatever the issue is. Back to this video, I was floored watching the recount of the interaction. Road rage is such a crazy thing. Again wishing her the best in her recovery. It wasn’t until the end of the video that I remembered my own road rage incident and how it was so similar from a rage perspective. I won’t fill this space with the whole recount but basically a dude wanted to fight me in the middle of the wilderness of Great Smokey Mountain National Park, his wife hanging out the sunroof screaming “NOOOOOOOOO honey!” PSA- get help for your road rage.

I would like to comment to Ms. Bowlin, Aubrey, you did nothing wrong, you are the victim here, please never forget that. And I hope you sue the living sh1t out of that man's estate to cover your bills. Thank you for sharing your story, I ride just south of you in Oregon, as you do, I carry as well. While I have been riding for 30 some years and I too have had a few nut jobs to deal with, I must say I have never had someone get out of a vehicle to confront me like you had happen here. Maybe it's just I have been luckier, or it could be being 6'2" and 300 pounds sitting on a Harley get people to think twice...I don't know. But back to the point, you just can blame yourself, you just can not control someone else's actions or poor choices.
@SquidTips
@SquidTips 6 лет назад
It's sadly such a common situation that almost any rider I know can rattle off a few times something like this has happened to them (Minus the grabbing and head slamming). I don't think she's working on any civil suit, partly because I think she feels bad for the wife, and that she would just be causing more pain to her, which I understand, but then leashes her with the majority burden of the monetary damages. I think she knows logically that this isn't her fault, and that she made the best decision given the circumstance, but people still harass and hound her to this day online in such a way she has disconnected a lot of her social presence and keeps out of places she used to enjoy and feel comfortable in.
@shooterqqqq
@shooterqqqq 6 лет назад
I believe it's only right she sue to recover medical expenses and nothing more. It would help to even out any injustice against Ms. Bowlin. The wife will have to deal with her own bad choice.
@RV-ardvark
@RV-ardvark 6 лет назад
I am also an Oregon rider with 40 years of riding experience and I concur with your assessment that Aubrey should sue the man's estate to recovery her medical expenses. Aubrey was absolutely the victim and it was a righteous shoot to defend her life. She should not have to be in debt as a result of defending her life and she was both smart and courageous enough to have a firearm with her and use in an appropriate situation. I only hope the viewers out there do not criticize the officer who placed handcuffs on her at the scene. That officer needed to control the person who had the firearm until he could determine what happened. I'm sure he released her from custody as soon as he was able to hear from Aubrey and witnesses. Good luck to you Aubrey and stay safe.
@illla
@illla 4 года назад
@@shooterqqqq how about the time she lost not working? How about the time she was not able to enjoy her life because of she had to deal with all that crap this guy caused? She defenetly has to take much much more out of his property than just medical and lawyer bills. Yes, his wife and his family will deal with their bad choice, but his property is not their property. Nobody is goung to take property of Ms. Bowlin.

Aubrey was very smart not to talk to the local news.
@SquidTips
@SquidTips 6 лет назад
I’ve found it to be very hit and miss. MSM will very often be deadline focused, and looking to package increasingly complex stories into 1-2 minute segments that necessitates leaving out a lot of the nuance. You can find good journalists, but it’s impossible to know who’s going to do right by you in the madness of the initial incident in these cases.
@afnDavid
@afnDavid 6 лет назад
If you are going to talk to the media then you should INSIST on getting a raw un-edited and complete copy of ALL interviews. Maybe even set you cellphone in the middle of the table, recording, and if they balk, terminate the conversation/interview.
@SquidTips
@SquidTips 6 лет назад
There is a balancing act with this depending on your goal. If you want attention to your situation, then local news is usually your best option as a jumping off platform for you, assuming you don’t have your own platform. You can reach out to organizations that you feel will be open to your story, but it can be hard to cut through the noise of other stories. Many news orgs if you impose those types of restrictions will just ignore your story (Unless they have the first scoop) unless you have Teir 1 level news (Which this very well could be).

Traffic is bad here, and there has been no significant improvement in years. The construction on the roads is constant, and takes forever to complete. It can’t be said to be the only factor in these types of situations, but the constant daily frustration many people feel has to attribute to some non-zero amount of road-rage violence.

I wish events like this could be avoided by just lane splitting away but unfortunately more permanent measures are the only viable outcome when an aggressor will stop at nothing trying to cause harm.
@SquidTips
@SquidTips 6 лет назад
It is good that she wasn’t held criminally responsible for what happened, that was obviously a very severe and life destroying possibility, but it’s very hard for me to say that things worked out. When this stuff happens, you can choose to civilly sue the aggressor, but in this case it would end up being the estate/wife, who she doesn’t feel should bear the responsibility of his actions. So now she’s in a weird spot with debt piled up, creditors at her heels, and still feeling the emotional burden of what happened, for something that she couldn’t control.
@illla

As a truck driver of 25 years, and someone who hopped on her first bike in 1992, I can confirm that road rage is an issue. I've had incidents that got physical with other truck drivers for something as simple as having to change fuel pumps, because the one I was at was broken... people get too angry, too quickly, over things that really don't matter, often taking out frustration on others that had nothing to do with the person they unloaded that frustration on.. we are all just trying to get home, and to work, it's not worth the rise in blood pressure. I also carry, in my truck when legal, and on my bike. Im sorry she had to go through this, and also feel for the family of the man who lost his life. So much pain and suffering for what should've been a meaningless interaction, not to mention loss of life. I hope that I am never in her situation.

Interesting interview and scary all at once. I have been riding for 45 years and never once have I had someone stop, get out of their vehicle, and approach me. Maybe because I am extremely careful and recognize I am at a disadvantage on a motorcycle. Other than some flip-offs, nothing at all. Many close calls with cagers not paying attention or being aggressive, I just avoid them. I conceal carry and might have done as she did once it got physical. Being 6'-2" and 235lbs helps to de-escalate many potential situations. It is always best to avoid, deescalate and move on wherever possible, people are nuts. The guy was 60, and attacking a girl on a motorcycle? Good riddance.

Squid Tips By the time he was beating her up it was too late. At that point the only thing she could have done is exactly what she did. But, when you're carrying a lethal weapon you need to do everything you can when you come upon someone like this to DISTANCE yourself as much as possible. I've ridden (and raced) for about 40 years. Flipping someone off on the freeway is something I would NEVER consider doing. She just added fuel to the already burning flame in this guys anger. She could have turned on her turn signal, changed lanes, and let this clown go by. Hindsight is always 20/20 as they say, but it could have turned out differently if at least one of them wouldn't have lost their cool.
@SquidTips
@SquidTips 6 лет назад
I too walked away from this experience thinking about what changes could be made to laws or MSF courses to prepare riders for this type of scenario, as this is not something that ever came up for me over a decade ago when I did my class. Lane splitting is illegal, so many WA riders never even think of it as an option. If it were legalized and taught, this could have lead to Bre considering it as an option, or never being there in the first place. MSF courses should talk more about road rage, and incident avoidance. They should discuss situations like these to encourage bikers to attempt to ride away from an incident whenever possible, even if breaking a law is necessary. There is a bias that comes with experience, where it is easy to forget what it was like to not have that level of expertise. It's easy to say 'She should have known X or Y', but when you are working in an infrastructure of laws and training that doesn't prepare people for this type of thing, I don't think its fair or right to hold that lack of experience against someone.
@plasticapple704
@plasticapple704 6 лет назад
Squid Tips Hopefully all riders (and people that legally carry guns) can learn from this tragic incident. I've never been a fan of lane splitting, even in states where it's legal. But that's just me. If I have a choice between possibly having something like this happen or breaking a traffic law I wouldn't hesitate to do whatever I needed to do to get away from the threat. Unfortunately, a lot of people's egos are bigger than their brains and they end up not being able to just LET IT GO!

Yeah, for sure. When I was younger I liked talking a little S and getting into fights. I never wanted to get into a life and death brutal blood bath of a fight, but throwing a few punches then stopping the moment you had the advantage could be fun. Even when I lost, the guy would do the same for me. I figured it was just sort of an unwritten rule. Anyways, the day I started carrying a gun my entire demeanor had to change. No more sarcastic comments. No more standing up for yourself when people are rude. You just keep your head down and keep to yourself. When they say an armed society is a polite society, they're not exaggerating. It's completely changed who I am in public.

I want to be clear when I say that she is definitely the victim here and can't be blamed for what she did. But I'd also say this whole thing was likely avoidable by simply getting over as soon as the guy started tailgating. If you can't escape by speeding up or lanesplitting, getting over so they're in front of you allows you to keep whatever distance you need. People like that are dangerous and the best way to protect yourself is to get them the hell away from you.

Part of telling this story is to bring more light to situations like this, as I think they are more common than most people think. There are unique aspects of conflict and road rage when you are on a motorcycle, and it’s hard to prepare for these situations unless you know what they look and sound like. There is a lot of good advice for what could have been done differently to change the overall outcome, which will hopefully be in the back of people’s minds in the event they find themselves in a similar situation.

I had a situation where a guy pulled out infront of me. He made a right turn onto the road i'm on that was too close. I knew it was safe for me to swerve into the adjacent lane so I did. Honking as i passed him. The guy decides that the best idea is to get behind me and attempt to ram the rear of my motorcycle. I'm staring at him in my rearview while this all happens and have to twist my wrist to the absolute limit to get away from him. 100% throttle, and had I not noticed and reacted as quickly as I did, he would've hit me in the back and very well could've killed me in the accident. Even with my reaction time and accelerating when I did, he still got within 3ft of me. Then I gesture at him and he gets alongside me, starts yelling out the window. Then slightly slows down at a red light before running it and getting into the lane i'm in (i'm still in the left hand lane from when he pulled out on me) and at the next red light (that he actually stopped at) put his truck in reverse and attempted to run into me again. I'm yelling at him and then flee (cuz he's obviously crazy and has attempted to run me over twice and almost hit me once because of his stupidity) I go around him and he swerves into me again (third time on purpose) and i manage to get away and call the cops. The cops on scene (even though everything was recorded) treated me like i antagonized him (even if i flipped him off, it doesn't AT ALL justify someone trying to murder me with their vehicle) and acted as if the other guy hadn't done anything wrong. Ignored that there were 3 seperate and distinct occasions where the dude used his vehicle as a weapon to try to assault me or murder me. I totally get what she means with the PTSD stuff. I can't go down that road without remembering it (at least a little) and on the bad days my body goes all fight or flight and my hands get clammy and sweaty, getting emotionally distraught and stressed out.

Fortunately, I have never had a confrontation with a motorist while riding my motorcycle, although I was once run off the road on my bicycle by a cop, no less, and I have been screamed at with no provocation by a couple of motorists while riding my bicycle. I don't know if it would have been possible in Aubrey's situation to just let the SUV pass her before things escalated, but I try to avoid confrontations by letting aggressive drivers go around me if I can't get away from them. Just for general information: She said that she shot the guy with a full metal jacketed bullet. Obviously it worked but is NOT what you should have loaded in your carry gun. Self-defense bullets (hollow points) are designed for full expansion and maximum damage. Because of that they will not usually exit the bad guy's body. Shooting someone with a full metal jacketed bullet risks having that bullet pass right through the bad guy and kill or injure someone else. There were a lot of innocent people on that freeway when the gun was fired. I use full metal jacketed bullets in competition (USPSA and Steel Challenge) and at the range but ALWAYS load rounds designed for self-defense when my life might be on the line. Speer Gold Dot, Hornady Critical Defense, and Remington Golden Sabre are great choices. Most law enforcement agencies seem to use Speer Gold Dots. Take care
@SquidTips

Yeah, she specifically stated that she had been at the range the previous weekend and hadn't gotten around to switching out her rounds. I think this further reinforces her statement that she was never specifically seeking out conflict.
@plasticapple704
@plasticapple704 6 лет назад
Strapping on a firearm certainly doesn't mean that you're seeking out conflict, no matter what kind of bullets you're using. If someone is going to carry a gun they need to be aware that the day they hoped would never come could all of a sudden be staring them right in the face. My point is that we should ALL carry the right kind of bullets in our guns AT ALL TIMES. Things would have turned out quite differently if that one bullet she fired passed through him and killed an innocent bystander. Keep up the good work.
