The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado catches up to the pickup pack by adding a trio of fuel-efficient engines. MotorWeek's John Davis has the road test review.
I keep seeing the ones from the early and mid 2000's disappearing, but the 90s trucks I still see rolling down the road. Goes to show what direction quality is going
It's probably a waste of time to write this but I've owned both Ford and Chevy trucks and nothing beats the Chevy for all around usage. I have a 2011 ExtCab LTZ 4X4 w/a 6.2L V8 and no truck I've ever owned compares - period. I'll be buying another truck next year and look forward to test driving all of them. I'll be truly impressed if something beats what I have!
Your body style Chevy is considered the pinnacle of Chevy trucks since that The 2014 + it had lots of little issues vibrations and stuff And the engine you have is definitely better than the newer ones
You have the best Chevy ever made, of course it's a good truck. What's funny though is you're so stupid you're going to buy another truck to replace it, even though it has given you no problems.
Do you have any retro road test reviews of any 2007 - 2013 Chevy Silverado trucks besides the hybrid you already posted? I have a 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 4WD Crew Cab LT Z71 with the 5.3 V8.
I love my Silverado. I’ve wanted a truck for years, glad I picked the Chevy. Ford and ram are good but something about the Silverado is just that much better.
Well I already know that my 2011 Ford F150 with a 5.0L Coyote V8 will outlast pretty much any EcoBoost engine out on the road just like my 1996 Ford F150 with a 5.0L (302) Windsor V8.
I've owned several Fords but I've been highly disappointed with the VCT 5.4.... amongst other issues (which all seem to be common problems). My 04 and 07 F150s were just horrible trucks. I love Ford's styling but I've found more reliability and less maintenance with GM's simple OHV engines. Working on my OHC F150 is a nightmare compared to GMs OHV. I hope Ford has vastly improved them....the 97-03 truck was very solid.
What about the 1992-1996 Ford Trucks, also my 2011 Ford F150 with a 5.0L Coyote V8 has 148,000 miles and still going strong and its a beast and it sounds like a beast with the Borla ATAK exhaust on it.
You're right about the 97-03 F150s I have an 03 F150 5.4 2 valve with 403,000 miles on it and runs perfectly. Many original parts still on it, even the starter and waterpump plus others.
Why you no longer include the acceleration and braking distance on your videos? like what you used to do on your old videos in the early 2000's, 90's and 80's.
This would be what I would buy when the time comes. I had a 1995 Silverado Extended Cab, 350 engine. Over 400,000 miles. I sold it and the guy that bought it is still driving it. Bought a 2005 Silverado 4 door in ‘07 with 70,000 miles at the time. It couldn’t be financed so I got a great deal. It’s an LS with the bulletproof 5.3 engine. I’m at 200,000 miles and the only thing I’ve replaced is a battery and a water pump. The water pump was only $130 and I was able to finish the job in right under an hour. They make these trucks really easy to work on
I have heard so many mixed reviews on the ecoboost. Especially those who work them...and those who just cruise them. Great performer if it never sees a trailer... disappointment when under load.
So much nicer than the previous gen Silverado. My dad hated all Chevy's since Ford and Dodge have gone through major European renaissances with Dodge having Italian influence and Ford having German influence. Chevy seems to be having one right now...
I bought a 2014 Silverado LT crew cab 4X4 new. It currently has only 35,000 miles on it. It's been great. I'm nearly 60 years old, if I was smart, I'd run this truck forever. It's smooth, quiet & powerful. Why upgrade?
I had a 2016 Ford F150 and now Silverado. I will agree the F150 is for construction men but the Silverado is for your family and your vacation excursions. Iv always said the F150 is for work and the Silverado is for family.
I've owned a 2008 silverado LT 5.3 z71 since 2010 . It now has 204000 miles on it . Rebuilt the transmission at 156000 miles . I've pulled a boat around since I've had the truck . Other them regular maintenance I can honestly say I can get another 100 k miles easily, I've changed the o2 sensors and starter I've had to change 2 times.. Truck has been great .. the plastic pile of shat interior is another thing haha
This about yo be moved to retro 😆 🤣 😂 I love my truck and it's nasty sounding exhaust 144j and counting. next one will be a 6.2 . If i could change something I lt would be cylinder deactivation as cool as it sounds it doesn't sound healthy when the 4 dead heads cold start while driving. only custom exhaust will let you hear those heads. truck was wayyy to quiet before borla atak catless straight pipes true dual.
Gotta love loyalists. If one of these companies made a 500hp truck that got 35mpg and could climb Mount Everest, the other companies faithful minions would still find problems with it...
Those are sales in 2012. We are no where near done with the year 2013 so total sales have no been released. For Ram to make such a dramatic jump in sales or for Chevy to make such a dramatic decrease in sales in just one year is highly unlikely and next to impossible.
I'm a happy Ford F150 owner, but I actually like how GM and RAM trucks look, I don't tow 10,000+ lbs so any full size truck will do, but I just love Ford trucks they've never let me down but I know everyone has had different experiences .. I've owned Chevys in the past (Tahoe, suburban) never owned a Ram truck tho. I think the 2014 GMC Sierra looks better than the silverado tho for sure. My next truck will be a F150 FX4 or Lariat .. I will def test drive the GM trucks tho
And 6 years later this truck is nothing but a rust bucket with holes above the fender Wells and Rockers that you can see through. Chevrolet does not know how to build a good truck that lasts. Might as well have bought a Dodge.
Did anyone else find that the driver's seat wasn't exactly inline with the steering wheel? I liked my 2014, but that always annoyed me. I traded it for a 2002 Hummer H1, and that 6.5L TD, to spite being old, would pull CIRCLES around the 5.3, even though the H1 weighs 7.000 pounds alone. The 5.3 was faster, but the 6.5 runs the same speed regardless of what you put behind it.
But what ppl dont understand an when i say ppl i mean (ford/dodge owners + haters) is that the GM trucks put down more power to the ground thats more reliable than ford or dodge does, look at motor trends truck of the year tests, the 2012 silverado won by simply our permoring the ford f-250 super duty and the dodge ram 2500, the silverado is more reliable than any other truck, look at facts, it sees less garage time than any other truck, how can ford or dodge be better? Just dont get it for real
That's pretty fair....it still pays to listen to the working world though. Most that I talk with tow these trucks daily. Fuel returns are not good and several with constant waste gate issues (a cable trench company in particular). I think maybe the issue here is that they should have bought diesels instead of the ecoboost (trying to save money). Ecoboost maybe be a great occasional hauler but maybe not meant to tow heavy loads everyday.
I hear the same excuse from Dodge owners over and over. Why the hell would Ford or GM copy a truck that gets out sold on a scale of about 2 to 1year after year? That is the one of the poorest excuses for mediocrity.
I'd send you the link but youtube wont let me. Ram sold 7344 trucks in June in Canada alone, and Chevrolet only 3962. Almost half. Im not speaking for the entire North America here, I live in Canada and said I see more guys switching to Rams then I do Chevy trucks, and the numbers prove my claim. It might be different where you're at. Have a good one
Like what? A cut out for your foot and hand? Those are negative space inside of the truck used for your convenience. In case you haven't noticed, negative space doesn't break.
I don't have the sales for Canada for the Silverado, but in the US in 2012, Ram sold 290,000 trucks. In the US in 2012, Chevy sold 418,000 trucks. But, if you count in the Sierra as well which is a similar truck, the sales jump to a total of 575,000.
That's most likely because in Canada, a 1500 starts at under $20,000 while a Silverado starts at over $30,000. It most likely has nothing to do with which truck is better, but which one they can afford.
Ford and GM both have diesels ready to go, probably just waiting to see if there's a market. WIth the price of diesel being what it is and with the obvious upcharge, doubt they sell all that well.
I have always wondered why all those years mago they totally did away with the famous or maybe not famous RED BOW TIE, and the slogan Beware of the famous Red Bow Tie, cant remember if the word FAMOUS is supposed to be in there, I really like the truck, espicially the gauge cluster with all those dials, the info screen in the center is really nice as well, also glad they left the shifter on the steering wheel. Adding those New HID headlights, a major step forward, a really nice truck
Honestly I see it all the time, die-hard chevy and ford guys opting for Ram trucks. I thought it was crazy at first too, but the two most common trucks you see now and Ford and Dodge. Maybe Chevy will win back some buyers, but like the guy said, no ones going to switch brands for a Chev.
I know plenty of guys that were done with Ram after having engine and electrical problems. Mostly P305 misfires. One got rid of his Ram because the coil spring rear suspension sucks. Terrible squat, every bushing started squeaking and groaning after a couple years.
It's tough cross shopping these trucks because they package so differently and price varies dramatically when you spec them. The Ford ecoboosts seem problematic after warranty and the 3.5na is under-powered compared to the GM 4.3 V6. I'm a fan of the Ford 5.0 which sounds good but not as efficient as the GM 5.3. Trucks are more prone to body damage and steel is cheaper to repair. The RAM is built in Mexico and Hemi engines not efficient but sound really good but I have little faith in Dodge reliability. So many decisions to consider and it's actually great to have these choices. With year end discounts of up to 10k it;s a good time to buy. I like the Silverado 5.3.
igotwhips agree about the 5.3. I have an ‘05 with 200,000 miles. In all that time I only had to replace the water pump. I was able to replace it myself in just under an hour. My Dad has a King Ranch F150 with the 5.0. It sounds great and is fast but is also much more complex. The thing that drew me to the 5.3 was it’s simplicity. It still uses a traditional cam in block, has an iron block, 4 bolt mains, etc. it’s just an incredibly robust design. In all the time I’ve had it the truck has never even thrown a check engine light. My Dad’s 2012 F150 has needed several sensors replaced and seems to be throwing a check engine light all the time. In its defense I don’t think it’s ever left him stranded though
Dodge is the better of the truck. It looks better, rides like a sports car, and can tow more then any of these other trucks with that cummins engine. I know so many people who have owned Fords for years who have switched to Dodge.
KiloByte72 The reason I would prefer steel is because it's the most common and abundant of metals produced and thus for helps to maintain jobs and support an industry when used for auto manufacturers and other businesses. Another reason is because steel is known to be a little stronger and a heavier metal than aluminum, that's why I want any vehicle that I purchase to be made of it. Aluminum on the other hand is a lightweight metal used for specific purposes. The Italian auto maker Ferrari for example uses aluminum to make their cars because the company once intended for their cars to be solely used for racing only, before Enzo Ferrari the company's founder decided in 1947 to make his cars available for purchase to the general public rather than just specifically for racers. Ferrari is a car company in which started out as making racing cars only and thus needed the light weight material to ensure the cars performance ability because of it's origin and heritage based on an emphasis on speed and performance that still persists with the company today. Even though their cars are made available for purchase to a broad audience today, they didn't start out that way. Other auto makers such as Ford specifically made some specialty models of their cars to be used for Nascar racing in which most of the cars structure was made of aluminum. One such example is their 1963 Ford Thunderbolt if I remember the name of it correctly, this specific car that was manufactured by Ford was just basically a hot rod Ford Galaxy but by another name. The car's body was made of aluminum as well as the chassis and engine if I'm not mistaken whereas the regular Ford Galaxies that were mass produced for the general public of that year were made of steel. So, as you can see, aluminum is a lightweight metal that's used for speed and performance, that's why most high performance car companies with a racing heritage use it to make their cars. Since I'm not a racer nor interested in speed but just want to get from point A to point B that's all and not having any desire to put the pedal to the metal, I don't see any need to have an aluminum vehicle or any part of it made of aluminum, so steel would be just fine for any vehicle that I purchase to serve it's purpose when I'm shopping for one. Now you understand.
