Road Test: 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman S - Transition of Power

"When the Boxster-based Porsche Cayman hardtop launched for 2006, it was just what the doctor ordered for Porsche fans who felt the 911 had gotten too expensive, and too far away from its simplistic sports car roots. Well, now there is reformulated Cayman for 2017, and truth be told, it is not a simple concoction at all. Even its name is more complex. But, if the side effects are more fun, should it still be the Porschphile’s drug of choice?"

718 Boxster S; 242 Laps on The Ring, June - July 2017, no problems, no crash, Great Car. one set of tires and brake pads, one oil change. one speeding ticket once back in USA. When going around the Nurburgring, sound was never an issue.

It's kind of funny seeing people complain about a Porsche with a four-cylinder, when there are more 4-cylinder Porsche Models (356, 718, 904, 912, 914, 924, 944, 968) than 6-cylinders. (911, 959, Boxster/Cayman, 914-6)
@dlg5485
@dlg5485 7 лет назад
That's because most people don't know the the first thing about Porsche's history. Plus they want to jump on the 'purist' bandwagon because they think it makes them look like more of a gear head. It's really just stupid to complain about a car as capable as this because it sounds different than what one's limited knowledge is aware of.

Just because it seems like a downgrade. Less cylinders, doesn't sound as good... But like you said, flat 4's are actually truer to Porsche's roots, and this new H4t is faster and more efficient! It's a win/win!

Ever wonder why your local TV commercials are so annoying? It is because the audio has been processed to compress the dynamic range, making each word uttered by the talking head sound equally loud. This is done so you don't missing the advertising message over the crying baby, noisy kitchen exhaust fan, and fighting kids. This man has been hosting this show for as long as I remember watching PBS. He has the unique talent that his voice has this natural knack. I can barely get through half of their episode even with the volume dialed back to half.

As usual, Porsche absurdly under-estimates their performance numbers. 3.8 sec to 60...those are unbelievable numbers. This is my favorite overall sports car, by a mile. It's easy to drive (even as a daily) and can be aggressively tracked all day without breaking a sweat. The amazing chassis, engine and transmissions make this a clear standout, even a segment above. I will most definitely own a 718 in a few years, preferably in GTS trim. Can't wait for that one.

VERY comparable performance to a Corvette Stingray, the last test of the Stingray I saw had a 3.9 0-60 time. And similar fuel economy. It does start about $15k more. It lacks the V8 rumble, but has a far superior interior and overall quality to justify the price.

@@Porsche-NinjaThis is old af, but if i'm right, you're referring to the c8 stingray and this comment was from 6 years ago talking about the c7 stingray being 55k vs nearing 70k with the cayman s 2017. I mean when he commented I dont even think the c8 was announced yet, that was like in 2019, i blur the lines between when the leaks were coming out and the actual announcement, but leaks were out by like 2018 iirc. Now the c8 is 68.3k vs cayman 68.3k vs cayman s 80.3k if you can get them for that (good luck, lol). Yes, the c8 is the faster car in a line and around the track. The c7 however was pretty comparable both in straight line speed and around many tracks from what i can remember to the cayman s. I'd still take the cayman s just cause i think it looks better and the corvette gets too much attention, but that's just me.

There's definitely no doubt that Porsche fans are upset about losing that venerable flat-6. But Porsche did well making the new flat-4 have more power and torque. And the power-curve is very flat -- you almost can't be in the wrong gear with that engine. The flat-6 needed to be revved high to get max power out of it. But I do miss the sound... You just can't make a turbo-4 sound all that great, no matter what you do.

I am not necessarily calling out MotorWeek with my comments, at least not solely, but I have heard a claim made in this video so often by so many reviewers on so many other channels that I feel I need to address it. Your statements "So why complicate things by adding 718 to the name" and "Now you'll also have a cool number to casually drop just like your 911 buddies" is very misleading. Those of us who own Porsches have always referred to our cars as 996, 997, 991, etcetera, instead of just 911, and, in the case of Boxsters, 986, 987, 981, and now 718, depending on series. Telling someone you have a Boxster tells them almost nothing whereas referring exclusively to the model's number designation provides most of the information a Porsche enthusiast wants to know without having to ask many other questions. We have always had the "cool number to drop" when referring to our cars and, for Boxster and 911 owners, it is actually preferred for precision's sake. When I say I have a "986 S", or "987 Base" everyone in our community has a clear picture of my vehicle, with the exception of colors and options of course.

Porsche always is super conservative with their performance figures. They rate it at 4.0 with a PDK and 4.6 with a manual. Most magazines found them to be in the ballpark of 3.8 with PDK and 4.3-4.4 with the manual. They're seriously fast cars now.

Only faster and better handling than a BRZ could ever offer.
@bliglum
@bliglum 7 лет назад
Don't be so sure. BRZ is basically a modified Impreza chassis, a platform which was used to win several WRC titles. So it's proven to be quite fast with solid handling characteristics... Don't let the brand cachet fool you Charles, Porches are still just cars, like any other.
@charlesearle8414
@charlesearle8414 7 лет назад
Of course Porsche's are still cars, and they have flaws. But that doesn't change the level of development that's gone into the chassis of the 982. In its own right, the BRZ is an amazing car and the impreza chassis is fantastic for rallying, but comparing it to the Porsche's chassis isn't really a comparison. The Porsche is still a stiffer chassis, and it being mid-engined will give it better balance, and the engines being the same format and displacement doesn't mean that they're on equal ground.
@bliglum
@bliglum 7 лет назад
That mid engine balance is key. Especially with a flat engine, mid and low, very nice. But I still think it would be a good fight, the rally heritage honed the Impreza platform to be impressively agile and balanced, especially for a more standardized front engine layout. Guess it would depend on the venue, Porsche would likely be faster on a prepped track. BRZ might take it on the tighter back roads and trails. Still think Subie won't put the turbo motor in the BRZ because it would cannibalize WRX sales. Funny, because it seems like Porsche never put the bigger, meaner boxers in the Boxter/Cayman because it may've eaten into 911 sales! Strongest engine they ever got was what? The Carrera S engine, one step up from the base model, in the Cayman GT4?
@charlesearle8414
@charlesearle8414 7 лет назад
Also, AWD gives an immediate advantage in rallying. And you're right about the Cayman being neutered. The GT4 had the 3.8, which was the second most powerful non-turbo they had (Only thing higher than the 3.8 was the Turbo or the 4.0 from the GT3 RS, but it was still detuned. After the 928 Porsche became convinced that nothing could be better than the 911, so when the Cayman came along, a car that if given enough power could outperform a 911 in every way, they detuned it in order to keep the 911 popular. It's a shame, but I actually think it's good that they put the flat-four engine in, it keeps the Cayman and Boxster more unique, not just being a slower mid-engined 911. It doesn't have to live in the shadow of the 911 as much. They're now different enough from each other to both be good and not compete.

Pete N so why you're saying is we need another 911 without the 911 badge. You want it to be bigger, fatter and heavier. It's also funny how Lotus Elise/Exige have been doing 4 cylinder sports cars for decades and no one bats an eye. Porsche bring back a 4 cylinder and everyone looses their mind. Sure, 6 sounds better. But you know what sounds better than 6? 8? 10? 12? If you after ultimate sound Porsche CGT but it'll kill you with its performance any day of the week.
