We review the new 2021 Porsche 718 GTS Boxster 4.0L. This "affordable" sports car adds more cylinders and power, hopefully capturing the hearts of drivers. We discuss the technical details, good and bad. Others to consider, Lotus Evora GT, Toyota Supra, BMW M4, GT500, or track day cars like the Ariel Atom.

Regarding your comments about the interior: I’m driving a 992 and I do miss the old, “cluttered” interior a lot. I just hate how they bury functions within the touch system that took a fraction of a second to find once you got used to it. Reducing physical buttons is step in the wrong direction imo.

I agree. Although I am not fortunate to own a Porsche, when I compare my new Audi to the 2017 q7, I miss the knobs and direct push controls that get you to exactly where you want to be. The new screen makes me take unnecessary jump through extra hoops steps.
@rebc123
@rebc123 3 года назад
I think that, other than price, is one of the reasons I went to a used 991.2 instead of a 992. The 991.2 has the nice balance on the interior between the more traditional layout with good useful tech. Also, the 992 wasn't available in a manual when I found my 991.2. I agree with you on the interior though. The Boxster/Cayman models have retained the more traditional layout with discrete buttons for discrete functions, something the 991.2 tends to keep as well.

@@carguy7627 I fear, you might be in for a disappointment. Production, at least for the GTS 4.0's will seize after March 2024, at least for the European market. It might even be for the whole 982 generation and all markets, not quite sure. (Originally the pure electric follow up was due to be released in 2024 which has been delayed due to the developments in the last few years. However, new regulatory requirements and possibly production planing challenges could mean that there will simply be a gap.) You better head to your next Porsche dealer and get clarification.

Nice review. I agree with everything you said except the complaints about the gearing, which is perfect the way it is for the roads I drive every day. Very drivable around town without the need to rev it to 8k every start (I have the GT4) but also a joy to run through the gears to a high speed when appropriate. The longer gears also minimize the frequency of shifting to get to a high speed, which makes for a smoother, quicker run to a high speed. The gearing is also great for the track and through twistie canyon roads. My advice, if you're not going to drive this car fast in a way that makes the gearing a joy to behold, buy something else. I look forward to your GT4 and GT3 reviews. Thanks for your great work!

I drove 981 boxster(pdk) and 2.0 supra(fully specd) back to back and the supra is a bit more fun just for the more shifting to do on narrow mountain roads. The 911 is a bad design that Porsche has masterfully forced to work through genius engineering. Mid-engine makes so much more sense, and it's cheaper.

I've said it ever since I first drove a 718 Boxster S on the launch event on the Porsche Leipzig circuit: The 718 is the point where the Boxster and Cayman finally overtake the 911, especially now that it has the 9A2 flat six. The 718 is now the better 911 - it's the hardcore "everyday" Porsche.

This video caused me to purchase this car. I went to the PSDS a few years ago (I made my one and only RU-vid video about it) and fell in love with the flat 6 sound. I ended up purchasing a Miata after that, partly because the boxster was a "4 popper" at that time, partly because I wanted to start simple, but I didn't really fit in it (I'm 6'4"). I decided to sell it after 3 seasons, with the intent of not having a sports car. This video changed my mind. Put in a $5k deposit on the dealer's next allocation this morning. Thanks for the great reviews.

As someone who has owned 4 Porsches in the last 7 or 8 years, one thing I cannot stand is the community that surrounds them. This car is perfect in every sense. However, the Porsche community would have you believe that the 911 is superior. Dollar for dollar, the 718 GTS shits all over the 911. I decided to stop spending my money on cars this year otherwise, I'd still own this car. 2020 MY

I have had both a 981.1 Cayman S and a 991.2, and the 911 is every bit as special as a Cayman, imo. The 3.0 Turbo motors are outstanding. A base 911 is not that different in price to a Cayman GTS, especially in the used market for a low mileage car. They are both excellent cars, run on the same assembly line, and they are much more similar than they are different. I couldn't care less what other people think.

Be careful what you wish for. For years people have asked for Boxster/Cayman trims that approach (or exceed) 911 capability. Now that they are here, is it a surprise the prices also approach 911 levels? If you don't want to spend ~100k, buy a base Cayman, it is a wonderful car. Still too high? The return of the flat 6 engines is bound to depress prices of 2014-2016 981 series cars, and a 3.4 liter Cayman S is a 99% ideal sports car.

The upcoming 400z will certainly be a good sports car, but with a front engine and turbo v6 it is unclear if it will have the handling balance and quick throttle response of the Porsches. The Cayman has a precision and telepathic control that is almost unique among modern cars, let's hope the 400z gets similar abilities.

Curious why you prefer this 4.0 vs the old 3.8 in the GT4/991.1 . For sure the old 3.8 sounds better and the performance difference is minimal to me. Let's not forget about the depreciation factor too (GT4's are finally depreciating). Disclaimer: I recently bought a 981 GT4 vs a Carrera T (your livestream advice was a significant factor). Also i have never driven the new 4.0's yet.
