The first Russian 5th generation fighter is scheduled to have its first flight in 2009 and enter service with the Air Force subsequently. The PAK FA will incorporate technology from both the Su-47 and the MiG 1.44. it will be stealthy, have the ability to supercruise, be outfitted with the next generation of air-to-air, air-to-surface, and air-to-ship missiles, and incorporate an AESA radar. This machine will use a completely new engines and be able to perform unique maneuvers.

Ever since the Mig-29 first entered service, I fell in love with Russian fighters. They are beautiful, they perform extremely well and in my opinion Russian fighter planes clearly outperform anything with wings. Even the expensive F-22 Raptor. Good job Russia.!!

having known a USMC chopper veteran, i distinctly remember when he told me that only about 4 in 10 pilots serving a 100 mission tour were going to make it home, and that the average lifespan in mission flight hours of a chopper pilot was roughly 30 minutes.

The technology is called thrust vectoring. The exhaust of the aircraft is channeled in different directions to help the aircraft maneuver better. Inherently, most combat aircraft are aerodynamically unstable. indeed this allows it to perform high G maneuvers. Good structural design is important to keep the plane in one piece while doing so. Nevertheless, aircrafts remain in level flight most of their service life so it must also be able to perform well under these conditions. math=power.

@zibbaen Also, the 22 can be armed as a stike fighter, just as the 15 and 14 were. The 35 is a small plane, some of which can hover, meant for close-in ground support. It comes in hot and heavy, lays a beat down, and bugs of. The 22 is a MASSIVE airplane, it engages targets from the horizon line and remains in the area indefinitely providing strike, overwatch, recon, support, and defense. That's the difference.

@ImDimon As far as I remember the F-15 Eagle was made as a counter to the hyped projections of the MiG-25 (NATO-codename Foxbat). The MiG-25 as allegedly a super-fast (mach 3 or something), super-maneuverable, super-fighter with BVR-capabilities (It turned out to be a mach 2.83 interceptor with the same turning abilities as a truck doing 180 km/h on ice). The F-15 was made as a pure turn-and-burn fighter with BVR-capabilities.

@zibbaen wikipedia . org/wiki/Air_superiority_fighter ... wikipedia . org/wiki/Joint_Strike_Fighter_Program. An ASF is meant to enter airspace and completely cripple all counter offensive flights. A JSF is meant to enter airspace for striking/support purposes, perhaps lingering to provide overwatch and troop cover. We use harriers/hornets in the mountains of Afghanistan, or in Iraq. We use ASF primarily for escorts, and for invasion purpose (the "no fly" in Iraq was patrolled by ASFs)

The time frame that the PAK FA is currently in, is what US was at in mid 1990's. I'm not an engineer but I do research my comments.Russia is at least a good decade behind US. We have already produced 180+ F-22s. It even got cancelled because it had not clear current threat in fighter warfare. Everyone is considerably behind. We are a little farther ahead on our second 5th gen jet compared to T-50. I do admit that Russia will increase military funding and should speed up the process but still..

Test pilot says you have to pet your aircraft and give him a friendly clap (without gloves even if its cold) because it likes it ;) also interesting was a comment by the old guy who talked about their AI and automation of all kinds of maneuvers - starting from takeoff and landings to combat and missile evasion programs to help the pilot - also some safety measures where board computer doesn't comply with attempted maneuvers that would make the jet crash like the one shown in the vid.

Yes in non-biased exercises(Northern Edge 2004) the USAF simulated SU-30 capabilities with F-15C and F-18E(Super Hornet) against frontline F-15 squadrons and posted a 2-1 edge over the SU-30..A far cry from the 9-1 ratios posted in India..Technology has caught up with our F-15 and F-16 Cold Warriors.. It's obvious.. but a 9-1 Sukhoi advantage is just plain B/S.. The F-16 is back in production with substantial upgrades..

The PAK FA is having its maiden flight sometime this year, if it works out good it will join the Russian Air Force in 2012. Then we can really see if it can stand up to the F-22.

Unfortunately for all of us, even the frame and form of the craft are classified top-secret info, so we don't get to see it, yet. But, we do get a close look of the new Su-35BM, upgrade of the Su-37, being tested on this vid.

so the T-50 (PAK FA) is flying after about 3 yr delay , not the fact its techincally nearly 30 yrs behind the USAF ATF , and point out that PAK FA is a in early flight testing but the most beautiful point to point out about the PAK FA, is the shear amount of hurdles that russian had to climb just to get one plane flying whereas the US has flown an excess of 10 different types stealth aircraft and counting

lets see the F-22 and T-50 are both evenly matched so it really comes down to the pilot and the US spends about 2 million training one pilot ( so with that to go on I think we have a bit of a edge, but great machine any ways - best regards from the US

Su35 and PAKFA project shows the direction of research. If you do not realize that intelligent plane is next step to unmanned, self-dependent jet-fighter, capable to perform tasks with minimal intervention of human. This is it. Stealth, Supersonic cruise, ultra-maneuverability are useless if a pilot can not withstand high G.

@MixedMartialArtsGCF you're right on the fact that "speed doesn't matter". In manned planes planes anyway. We've already reached the limit of human capacity. The F-22 can go much faster than it already could, it's toned down so the pilot doesn't DIE. During Vietnam we though dog fights where over, it would all be missile guided. That turned out to be a total disaster... Our "advanced" f-4 phantoms were top of the line but gets shot down by migs which on paper should be compared to a bug.

US is developing new scramjet missle technology. A B-52 can carry a number of scramjet cruise missles at mach 6.5 they can carry conventional or nuclear warheads and pinpoint hit a target 1500 miles away from a single B-52 or B-1 and 2.

The program does not even have a completed airframe yet. First flight dates has been delayed numerous times, I believe that the latest word from Sukhoi is Jan/Feb 2010, and they admit that even if this happens, the plane might spend 5-10 years in development before it's actually ready for combat.

It would be very nice to see the T-50 fly, and to get a friendly version of the US-Russia rivalry of the Cold War. The technology and advancement of aviation resulting from that period is astonishing, however it remains to be seen how fast Russia can recover from the break up of the USSR.

A lot of other factors are taken into consideration when designing a combat aircraft. Mission, range, payload, etc. The Russians make good planes and we make really good planes in America. At the end of the day it is human ingenuity that fascinates me. That's why I became and engineer! and as far as which plane is better, I can't say, because haven't seen any performance data on the T50. I can surely say the F-22 is one hell of a machine. Besides, the hardware is only as good as the driver.

@1rich12396able The only problem is that there are radar systems that already caught up/ could detect even the best stealth systems today. Im not even sure if stealth could even be improved more. But Russia is already developing plasma technology since then, and they already figured out how to use it in terms of aerodynamics/and armor other than stealth.

@rcflyer55555 The ability to pitch, yaw, drop, accelerate, slip and skid violently and quickly, i.e., not just turn and change forward speed, are things that can help in evading missiles and if used in combination with ECM and countermeasures can help in missile defense. The current Russian fighter designs really count on this and I think it is an underestimated ability in the West. I hope none of us ever have to find out.

Its an SU-27/35 I think. A far cry from an F-14 my good man. It was Russia's answer to the F-15E Eagle and the FA 18(A-D) hornet. One of the best Russian fighters to date. Putting an F-14 against this plane is almost suicidal.

@2205Razors , acutally no, the US had developed helmet mounted sighted weapons , the AIM-82 and AIM-95 in the 70s but cancelled them not knowing the USSR had proceeded and field the R-73, so when the F-16s got their butts kicked and the reasons for why were know, all that happened was the AIM-82/95 worked was dusted off and intergated into the AIM-9X

Pre-production does take time but the Russian contraints are mostly funding and trying to creat advanced avionics "on the go" as the T-50 general airframe test flights continue. Pretty much at the moment, it gets tested with older avionics and weapon systems while the try to create new versions. In that type of process, it will take considerably longer time than what US had, since we had advanced electronics already made. "Russian industries are straining to produced" (avionics/weapons/engines)

I was checking some websites about the cold war and it seems that whenever the US came up with something, a fast bomber or so, the Russians gave a fitting reply. In quite a few cases, they actually outdid the west. The only field where they lag behind is electronics, but they're closing the gap. Many westerners would perhaps not like my statement, but the fact is Russians are masters in designing aircrafts. Their planes seem to outmaneuver laws of aerodynamics! :-) cheers

For anyone to say Iraq was about 'Iraqi freedom' is nuts, it was for the oil, but Afganistan is another matter I could be wrong but I don't recall the Taliban in the early 80's hijacking clapped of Soviet airliners and flying them into tenement blocks, nor do remember them blowing up people queuing for loaves in Moscow. The USSR wanted to expand. If 9/11 was fabricated, why didn't they say the plot originated, hijackers recruited from etc in Iraq in the first place?

While Russians definitely do lag the Americans in some technical areas, they excel in others. Comparing Russian aircraft to American models are like comparing a F1 car to NASCAR. They are meant for different purposes. Apples and oranges. American aircraft are long range, long term deployable aircraft whereas Russian aircraft are short term, short engagement intended.

@verdebusterAP I think the only really usable thing for plasma stealth would be on a large, AEW / EW plane capable of multiple targets while tracking others. Other than that its useless if you get in range of heat seeking weapons like you said, but it has to be in range of the heat seeking weapon in question. I wouldnt be surprised if the Russians already use it on a few TU160's or something

My observation is this..in the past Russians seemed to be quite very good at responding to US products using basic pencil/paper raw engineering. If they start using computers (my sense is they are quite as good as any in Mathematics/computing) they should be able to provide healthy competition for the americans. I think the industry in usa should be glad that Russia can still compete (probably the only single country that can compete so far on its own on this level..with usa)

@TeslaGenius interesting vid indeed and shows 1 argument i have with people who talk about the f-22 having 70,000lb thrust. its a heavy bird especially combat ready so its needed. combat ready the thrust/weight ratio is nothing out the ordinary, pretty much the standard 1:1 ratio. its a big bird and needs alot of fuel onboard for missions as drop tanks can be used but defeat the stealth purpose. its a big heavy bird and 70k lb thrust is needed.

Cyberwwizard: The Indian airforce, flying Su30MKIs, in flight combat training exercises with US F16 and F15s trounced them, the US admitted this. They went on to do the same against RAF Tornados. The most recent exercises were against the Eurofighter Typhoon, the results of the exercises have been kept secret. (The Typhoon is a new aircraft, bad results would not help export hopes). Shit they most definitly are not, only arrogance would assume such a thing.
