Always a thrill to drive this southbound, enjoyed it. Those runaway truck ramps are the highest I've seen this side of I-70 in Colorado. Excellent job with the video.
Driven this section of roadway for over 36 years. Never gets old. But I can say I have driven it a few times with horrible fog to where you couldn't see you hand in front of your face.
Mountains are no joke.. Try driving through West Virginia mountains.. I Drove through and it was the most terrible drive ever.. The fog was so heavy on the top of the mountain I couldn’t see a thing. Being that high and not being able to see is not a laughing matter. Thank God the light on the road gave me some help. Please avoid at night... Also Virginia Skyline is beautiful but very dangerous. ✌🏾
Taking this trip soon on my way down to Florida. I've taken the trip 10 years ago and I am overdue. I love this part of the United States. You are so high up in the mountains and the clouds seem closer. The trip has never gotten old. Good choice of music too.
Love the scenic portion in Virginia from Wytheville to Bluefield. Hate the WV Turnpike of 77 with too many tolls in the 100 miles stretch. Most fun portion is the downhill from VA mile 14 to NC.
I remember going through here the first time when we did our first road trip from New Hampshire to Florida, I never knew that I would see a view like that. Now I make sure to go this route even though its 5+ hours longer than just taking I-95.
I had the same exact experience. I was kinda blown away my first time down this stretch. Now, amazingly, I drive this to and from work. I feel kinda lucky. :)
I’ll be driving 77 South from Cleveland all the way to South Carolina on my way to Disney World with my family next year. The scenery on this drive looks awesome.
It’s incredible. As long as you stay well ahead of nearby semi’s, it’s not a bad drive at all. You also get two tunnels as you leave WV and enter VA. Cool drive but respect the truckers.
I remember when they built 77. So I got to see it without it. Used to be a lot quieter, thats 4 sure. lol Went up the dirt road being created & drank water coming from a spring straight outta the rocks. Also remember them blasting through rock to make it. The Blue Ridge Mtns are a beautiful place to live. :O) Shalom...
I drove this back in February at night and it was crazy because I didn't even realize we were that high up and then I looked down and saw all the lights in the valley...so serene
This mountain might not be really steep but it is very dangerous because of changing weather conditions, especially fog and high winds. In 2010 numerous different accidents occurred on the same day around the same time. Cars and big rigs piled on top of each other, 2 were killed. In 2013, 95, yes 95, cars and trucks piled up on top of each other in one massive accident, killing three and injuring 25. People were driving straight into crashed vehicles with no idea because the fog had suddenly gotten so thick. Just last week 4 big rigs were blown over on the same day around the same time by high winds. Anyone driving this route should take it seriously, check weather conditions and be very cautious.
Heads up people, this road isn't that bad. I've been making the drive from Asheville NC to Beckley WV since the late 60s (before the interstate was completed). I make the trip at least 5 times/month and I've seen it in all kinds of weather. Conditions can get bad but not to the point of being "impassable" unless it snows like crazy. Those of you who say it's bad, please do the rest of us a favor and stay off the road...
I can't tell you how many overheated cars and trucks I've seen on the northbound side of the highway here. More than the 13 Mile westbound upgrade on I-68 west of Cumberland, MD. I always shut down the AC, drop speed, and get in the slow lane. It might take a whole minute longer but you won't be on the side of the road with the hood up.
I-77 at Fancy Gap is the scariest 10 miles in the United States at night. The fog is really dense and visibility almost ZERO. Plan your drive during the day folks!
Frances Newman it’s not so bad. I’ve driven a truck down it in day and night in the fog. Just gotta have situational awareness and watch for taillights.
@@amiegee3134 Right? I had a minivan full of children - going northbound to a ski trip in W Virginia. I was praying to God and all my ancestors to make it out safely.
Do this drive every time we drive from Ohio to South Carolina. Not a bad drive but you gotta respect the mountains. My wife and daughter get to enjoy the scenery of West Virginia and Virginia while I try to stay clear of the truckers.
I decided to take this route for our drive from Canada to Florida in November 2019. We found ourselves in this section just as it got dark and started to rain and SO MANY trucks. The trucks made visibilty so much worse with the water spray. Let me tell you that I will not be using this route again if it means driving through it in the dark. I remain traumatized. Some other comments confirm that I'm not alone in feeling the way I do about this stretch of road.
The wind sheers thru that stretch of highway are terrifying! I was Christmas shopping in NC and was head back home to Wytheville and traffic was backed up for miles. Two 18 wheelers had blown over going down the highway! Very dangerous indeed but breathtakingly beautiful!
I've been the passenger on this stretch more times than i can count but i will say that the southbound drive going down scares me to death as a driver.
I’ve done this road dozens of times over the years. Always smell overheating brakes. In winter experienced fog and ice. Respect nature. It’s always going to win if you don’t.
The view & drive there is just totally awesome! I live in Canada (southern Ontario) and always thought the drive along the Niagara Escarpment, looking down from there, was impressive...and it is. But it pales compared to the drive on Fancy Gap...did this for the first time in the summer of 2019. Just a word of advice, though,...I've heard the drive down The Gap can be very dangerous, particularly with snow or fog, so please don't go too fast down there & use your brakes.
No joke, these are the worst condition escape ramps I've seen on a major pass! One of them looks like a hillside garden. Also odd lane markings too. Great video!
