Heya! I hope you're all keeping well.
Here is what happened my first day in Scotland whilst road tripping up there in my car. Love to dabble in a bit of off roading haha... luckily I'm ok and my car wasn't damaged but wanted to talk about the subject of carrying emergency gear incase of an emergency or SHTF.
Thanks for the endless support! Take care x

As a "big-truck" driver for 18 years I can say you got the important "bits" right. You came to rest UPRIGHT, UNHURT (well, physically at least it would seem) and able to press on. It IS traumatic to go through this sort of thing and after you step out of the car, easy to wander off aimlessly and step into an abandoned mine shaft or something, so gathering your wits after the "event" was very smart. Kudos for keeping your head! Oh and a huge hug to help with the post-crash "shakes and wiggles" you get when the adrenaline fades. We love you! Remember to all of us, sheet metal is cheap but you, young lady, are PRICELESS!

The most important thing is that you're OK. These things happen unfortunately especially on open country roads. A tow rope is usually a good piece of kit and a first aid kit along with jump leads. A blanket is always a good thing to carry, a folding spade aswell
@freddukepoo3359
@freddukepoo3359 2 года назад
I always have a space blanket, wool blanket, first aide, water (24pk), fire starting kit, some canned and dehydrated foods, and a hand radio in the car whenever i go on a camping trip/ long drive up north.
@randyevartsjr4729
@randyevartsjr4729 2 года назад
That's happened to most of us. Don't feel bad. I carry a small backpack in my vehicle that weighs about 18 ponds. It has 5 days of food, a fire starting kit, water and water purification, a small folding saw, a mora garberg, a box stove with fuel tabs, cook pot, canteen,small 30 degree sleeping bag, first aid/trauma kit and reflective tarp and cordage for shelter.
@songasport
@songasport 2 года назад
It's worth including a tow rope in your emergency car kit and making sure you know where the towing eyes are in case you get stuck and a tractor passes by that can help you. Other gear I carry all the time is a basic first aid kit, basic toolkit, a bit of cash, warning triangle, hi-vis jacket, foil blanket and torch + headlight. Food/drink + warm clothes/waterproofs and a powerbank aren't permanently in the car but I take them depending on how long my journey is. I'm glad you're ok and the car isn't damaged.

@bob_the_bomb4508

That’s a good list. Only other things I carry are an entrenching tool and a small board on which to put the Jack in boggy conditions. In proper 4 x 4 conditions sand ladders are vital but not for ‘normal’ driving.
@davidcann6021
@davidcann6021 2 года назад
Glad you're okay that's the main thing :) Had a flat tyre on a dual carriage way in the dark recently, very glad for all the safety kit I have especially warm clothing and torches. One thing I didn't realise is if you have a flat tyre (which wasn't fixable) and the vehicle comes with no spare they won't tow you. Must look at getting an emergency spare wheel now.
@mickb6285
@mickb6285 2 года назад
I live in the Yorkshire Dales, to me a spare wheel (a space saver is good enough) is an essential piece of kit along with a big torch that can charge off the car due to patchy mobile signal. The ability to change the wheel and get going again is potentially life saver. The modern tins of tyre weld and inflator kits are no good if you put a hole in the tyre wall.
@davidcann6021
@davidcann6021 2 года назад
@@mickb6285 That's what happened to me, no chance in plugging a side wall tare. Tried the tyre foam, all it did was highlight where the hole was.

Done it myself around Fort Bill. One wheel down a ditch and you're done. Same trip I saw three more over the week. Last year I was first on the scene if a rollover, an old bloke was upside down. I went to help. Car was a mess blood, all over the interior. It turned out to be his wife's strawberry jam, he'd just been shopping and was fine !

Happy to see your unhurt. 😀😀 I carry a self inflating mattress and a large throw. The batteries in small torches go flat too quick so l carry a large lantern type with the large square battery and replace it every year. The wheel brace you get with the car are useless too small. One with an extending handle is what you need. Hope you enjoy your trip look forward to your next blog. 😁😁

I've got a 4x4 pick up and always keep a selection of tools, WD40, ropes, a tow chain, jump leads, a couple of torches, a small fire extinguisher, 12v air pump, space blankets and a decent first aid kit in the cab (it all fits easily behind the back seat) so that I can help myself or others in an emergency. Glad you weren't hurt! Tricky bit of fast road there. I carry a window breaking mini hammer/knife (ResQme) in my car in case the doors won't open. I have it permanently attached to the dashboard in a non-airbag area that I can reach with my seatbelt on. It's no good in the glove box or the door pocket if the car is upside down or my seatbelt is jammed. Learnt that the hard way! I also have a multi-tool type entrenching-spade in the boot, lots of torches, a sleeping bag, tarp & water and these items never leave the car. Also Hi-viz vest, first aid kit, tyre puncture kit, zip ties, duct tape, multitool, rope, trangia&messkit. And I want to get a couple of snatch blocks for good measure!!

It's all part of the learning curve of driving. I used to be a driving instructor and I used to tell those that passed their tests , now the real learning begins. Driving on roads you're not to familiar with can be totally different in daylight and night time. Winter roads in the Highlands can be treacherous especially with black ice about. Glad you're OK albeit out of pocket a bit. Hope the cars OK as well. Keep the great videos coming. 👍
@cruachan1191
@cruachan1191 2 года назад
First and foremost, glad to see you're OK. On the narrow roads in the Highlands and around the NC500 route this sort of thing is quite common. If you're solo then an emergency beacon of some sort is worth considering, mobile signal isn't always there in the Highlands either. I work in IT and used to spend my life on the road so learnt to carry a few things like a warm coat, an old towel (to use as a mat and for cleaning in the event of a puncture), water and snacks and have since added a little hexi stove and coffee from UN ration packs, along with a US army style canteen and mug to heat things in. The M8 (Motorway between Glasgow and Edinburgh) has a high point at Harthill Services that is very prone to heavy snow in winter and getting stuck there isn't uncommon. Lastly I also carry a bottle of pre-mixed screenwash so I can keep the windscreen clear.

Hi Becks. Thanks for sharing your experience. So glad the ditch wasn't a deep one! I don't think for one second you're a careless speeding driver but in my lifetime I've seen so many accidents that were avoidable by simply slowing down a bit especially on the tricky narrow sections. Remember it's better to be a bit late but alive! (I'm sure you know this already) If any idiot behind you starts tail-gating just pull over and let them pass. From looking at the wheel ruts on the video I'm thinking you weren't going very fast when it happened and I'd bet a month's salary you had your seat belt on. Stay safe mate, we love you.

So glad YOU and your car are safe and ok Becks. When you drive these narrow country roads like we do to get to the lakes, lochs and mountains it's an occupational hazard. Put it in the life 'experience bank' and learn from it. Could have been a lot worse and you handled it amazingly :-). Like Elliot said, cars are metal and plastic and can be fixed or replaced. If you walk away upright and unhurt, that's a hell of a good result. Couldn't have picked a prettier place to come off the road mind you..!! Keep up the good work Becks.

I'll also have a sleeping bag, torch and a few light sticks as well as a snow shovel and snow mat for tyre grip if I need to get out of a hole !
