This is one of the best and most honest EV video I have viewed. I own a 2020 Bolt and had a Leaf before this. The mychevrolet app is not good as it crashes constantly. Planning is the key and yes drive a little slower, use heated seats over heater. personally I will never buy another ICE vehicle the Bolt is the best car I have ever owned. All the negative info is spread by those who don't own an EV. If you wish to get the true info talk to people who own EV's is my advice. Thank you for a great video

Great impressions and summary! I've been watching several of these longer road trip type EV videos, especially with the Bolt. The Tesla is not as appealing to me due to quality control issues and price. I think they're still learning how to basically make cars. where established manufacturers have figured it out. I think the whole EV scene at this point is still the Wild West and when EVs become commonplace, finding charging stations will be much simpler.

Excellent review! Very realistic. We recently took our first road trip ('20 Bolt) and agree with your assessment. It's a comfortable highway car but long road trips require some patience. At 75 mph with the AC or heat blasting, range will indeed suffer. Your advice is solid. Get several apps before hitting the road. We have Chargepoint, Electrify America, and EVGo. Plugshare is very useful, there are reviews by users of various charging stations. Again, thanks to you and your lovely wife for taking the time to put this together. We look forward to more road trips! Bolt shoppers: DC fast charging is an option on Bolts, be sure the one you buy is so equipped. It should be listed on the sticker.

I bought a 2020 Premier a month ago. So far through 1100 miles I am paying about $7.20 per 1000 miles for charging at home. I have a special off peak rate of 3.27 cents per KWH. I am getting 4.7 miles per KWH on the Bolt. I am surprised the cost is so low to operate it. Very pleased so far.

Jim - fast charging into the upper half of a Bolt battery when traveling longer distances adds a lot of charging time. In your travels it appears that you weren’t pressed for time, so this may not have mattered, but if you could pace your charging stops so you can drive between 10% and 60% charge levels, this will reduce the time spent on the chargers. During colder weather travels it’s best to fast charge at night (warm battery) vs the next morning (cold), if you can’t stay at a place which provides a nearby charger opportunity.
@JimHoltan
@JimHoltan 3 года назад
Thanks, Dennis. Really, the only time we did full charges was at Pismo Beach (hotel's level 2 charger overnight), Huntington Beach (getting ready for Joshua Tree National Park), and La Quinta (getting ready to head to Blythe, CA). (Oh, we also charged to 95% in Glendale, CA, getting ready for the last 400 miles of the trip - but we were back at the hotel having breakfast as it was charging.) I was surprised at how fast the charging was in Huntington Beach (EVGo). We did our shopping and waited another half hour at the car and we were ready to go. Unfortunately, the Bolt's estimated ranges are often overly optimistic and misleading - especially when hills or higher speeds are involved - so you often have to err on the side of caution when you're driving out in the boonies. It would be nice if the MyChevrolet app wasn't so prone to crashes, as it does a great job of planning out your route to minimize charge times at your stops (I love it when it says, stop and charge at such-and-such a place for 17 minutes). That's the kind of insight you really need if you're on a road trip and you want to minimize the time at charge stops.
@dennislyon5412
@dennislyon5412 3 года назад
@@JimHoltan - the estimated range does adjust to your recent driving conditions, so if you’re on a long journey, it should improve accuracy as you accumulate miles. You need to watch the green/yellow bar to the left of the estimated range display for clues as to how your current condition applies - big yellow bar means you may need to adjust your “next charge stop” plans, and driving at more than about 65, and the Bolt starts to get thirsty, unless it’s really hot out. I’m sure that the mychevy app will improve in time. Even “A Better Route Planner” is a work in progress, but shows much promise.
@petersilva037
@petersilva037 3 года назад
The earlier bolt year (see the charge curve) DCFC maxed out at 55KW. It looks like the 2020 is a lot better. Good on Chevrolet for that. To quantify what @Dennis Lyon is talking about: if you look at the charge curve for the bolt allev.info/2020/03/chevy-bolt-2020-dcfc-charge-curve/ When using DCFC (fast charging,) you will it will only charge at maximum speed upto about 50% full. Then it will start "tapering" (charging more slowly) from ... 0-50% it charges at a full 75kw speed, 50% to 65% it does 50kw, 65-75% ... it maxes at 30kw, then it cuts down to 20kw ... so charging from 10-40% is about twice as fast than putting the same amount of electricity in your car when the battery goes from 60-90%. The detailed curve varies by car, but the general idea is the same for all EV's.

Nice video. I would say that no one except those retired or unemployed and not looking for work with no care for time, could road trip like this. I have driven 650 max in a day in the bolt twice. I think 500 is reasonable. In a gas vehicle about 1000 a day is reasonable. Another point if anyone is considering electric, I bought my Bolt new (premier) for 25,900. Now you’ll have to spend about 33 for a premier. Best car ever for commuter though especially at that price.

We have a 2021 Bolt after having Chevy Volts since 2013. We love this car. We are planning a road trip from Oregon to Tucson AZ this winter and are wondering how the charging will go along the way. We don't have a deadline so can take a little more time if needed. We have all the apps and the My Chevy app. We just bought a Tesla adaptor ($125) we will carry with us to give us other charging options since there are so many Tesla charging stations. It will only work with Tesla Destination (level 2) chargers which are free but not with the Tesla superchargers. There has to be more charging stations available before EV's become more commonplace. I recently made a trip to Disney World, the area where we stayed, had no place to charge. Closest charging station was 35 mins away and it only had 2 outlets. Not nearly enough for the amount of visitors that area gets. I ended up renting a car.
@DoritosResidue

I agree with this. I have a fiat 500e ev and live in Southern California which is probably ev capital of the USA. Even then there is not enough charging stations. These EVs need DC charging as a standard and more of DC charging stations. Only then I can see EVs as practical for road trips. In my opinion as of now Its honestly an inconvenience for road trips (aside for teslas) which is why I still have an ice car.
@JimHoltan
@JimHoltan 3 года назад
I certainly appreciate your frustration. I think we’re fortunate here on the West Coast. Finding charging wasn’t an issue on our entire trip, and we never had to alter our route to do so. It is important to have a number of app resources available for finding stations - I haven’t found that one reliable app for listing everything. I’m turning more often to Google Maps for finding charging stations. They seem to have most documented. One thing I can tell you is that there are more every day and I think this is soon not going to be an issue. Electrify America has started their West Coast expansion, which is going to greatly increase the number of chargers.

Very informative video..thanks for sharing...will be test driving a 2022 Bolt EUV next week...i live in a suburb of Chicago.....questions: 1] To any of the owners of the Bolt who live in "harsh winter" conditions, would you recommend snow tires as Bolt only has FWD, 2] Didn't Bolt have battery fire issues in the past? Assume they have ben resolved,3] Is a 240 Volt, 30 amp circuit needed to charge Bolt at home [in garage]....thanks for helping.
@JimHoltan
@JimHoltan 3 года назад
Haven't tried it in the snow, so I can't answer that part (though I grew up in Wisconsin). I'm guessing it would perform well. Note that the Bolt has no spare, so the Michelin 'self sealing' tires it comes standard with are important. The fire issue was with 2019 and earlier models only. Battery technology for the Bolt changed in 2020. Yes, you will need 240 volt (level 2) charging at home. Plugging the Bolt into a 110 outlet with the 'emergency' charger it will take 3 days for a full charge. With a level 2 charger, it will charge overnight. Also, if you're in a cold climate, the 'prestart' function on the MyChevrolet app is wonderful. With the car plugged in to the charger, you can prestart the car from the comfort of your home. When you get out to the car, the cabin will be nice and warm and the initial heat will come from the charge cord (running the heater on the road is a HUGE battery drain, so anything you can do to minimize that is a good idea).

Yes, all Bolt's are under the recall order. While the 2020 and more recent models have improved batteries, Chevrolet has included these models in the recall as an abundance of caution. I would say Chevrolet is handling the matter responsibly. All Bolt owners will get new batteries and restart the battery's 8 year warranty at the time of installation. The battery issue is disappointing, but I would still say the Bolt is an excellent car. Hopefully they will soon be again on the market.

Great video with great information. I agree with you the bolt is very underappreciated especially in the automotive press. Everybody concentrates on maximum charging speed rather than overall capabilities. I think for a daily driver it's a fantastic car as are most hatchbacks. If you only take road trips very occasionally then the peak DC fast charging speeds really aren't that important. Other things are far more important like it being comfortable, easy to drive, turning Circle, parking ability, cargo carrying capability. Those things are far more important day in and day out then the once or twice per year you take it on a long road trip. I think a better route planner can tie in with the vehicle using an OBD2 Bluetooth connector. And it can take live data from the vehicle and alter the route accordingly. If not used it personally I've just heard that it can do that. Unfortunately for me it's a bit of a mixed bag. When I do take a road trip I tend to haul ass and cover serious miles. Your trip was much more leisurely with stops that you intended to take and do stuff at those stops. And for those kind of traveling trips which is for most people what they do it works out perfectly fine. I take road trips like that also, but I do have occasionally the need to cover serious miles rapidly. My record is 1200 miles in 17 hours Non-Stop. Basically drive 300 miles stop refuel the car take a stress break get something to eat that's not sugary get something to drink that's not sugary. And get back on the road. Keep in mind I live in the southwest where you can run 85 to 90 mph for hours on end so it's pretty easy to cover serious distances. And those speeds really affect range on an electric car on a gas car it does also but it doesn't really matter because it takes 2 minutes to fill a tank. So it's a matter of do you want to save money or do you want to save time.

Charging costs vary greatly, so you should always check that location’s rate per kWh. It’s usually found in whichever app you’re using to locate chargers. At one location, we charged for an hour and 28 minutes and the charge was $3.15. At another, we charged for an hour and 15 minutes and the charge was $16.79. So always be aware of the costs. However, you’ll always end up paying less than fuel charges for a gasoline powered car. @JimHoltan
@JimHoltan 2 года назад
Since we took the trip in March, it wasn’t a high point for temperatures, which was good. While AC doesn’t take as much energy as the heater, it’s still a drain on the battery you’ll want to minimize when you can. My work frequently takes me from Oakland, California to Sacramento (about a 90 mile drive one way). On hot days, I AM going to use the AC. Starting with a full charge, I can usually make the round trip without recharging. Basically, a multitude of factors (hills, wind, heat, cold, speed) are going to affect your individual trips, so there’s no ‘standard’ you can count on to pre-judge your trip. That’s why I stated EVs require you to be flexible!

Costs for charging an EV will vary greatly depending on a) your local utility rates and b) rates at the public chargers you choose. We have solar at home, so basically our charging is free. The ChargePoint app estimates what our costs would be if we DIDN’T have solar. A recent full charge (battery was almost empty) was estimated at $12.37 (based on PG&E rates). For a 🚗 getting 28 mpg, current fuel costs to go 260 miles (Bolt’s full tank range), would be about $37. When you’re using public chargers, always check their rate, as it varies greatly. Because we found free chargers on our last trip from LA to Oakland, we paid $0. A 🚘 getting 28 mpg would have paid about $57. So, with some creativity, an EV is a lot less expensive to run.

Hi Louis, here’s what I wrote earlier: Thanks. Total recharging costs for the trip were $137.81. Note that we started with a full 'tank,' charged for free at the rest stop and first hotel. Driving a car that gets 28 mpg and estimating $3.90/gallon (about what I observed along the route), I estimate fuel costs would have been $246.

Ha ha, "this is the first high speed charger we have used" The Bolt does not high speed charge. If one was not in. a hurry to get somewhere like you retired folks the bolt is the worst road trip of almost all EVs! Oh, and those seats....terrible!
