Road works vs. the Dutch cyclist - A direct rural route

When there are road works these should never prevent cyclists from being able to make safe journeys. That should apply even in situations like this one, a rural cycle-path connecting a village to a city. School children as well as adult commuters need to be able to use this path on a daily basis. If it is blocked then people will find an alternative which may mean they don't cycle any more and have to be tempted back. By preserving the safe cycle-path as shown in the video we preserve the modal share of cycling along this route.

Nice video! Question: How are VREDESTEIN tires there in Holland. I have been using Vredestein Fortezza tires on my Colnago Master road bike for almost 20 years and love them. I find them pretty puncture resistant and durable. Unfortunately, almost nobody rides them anymore.

Hmmm, you seem to get lucky with the cycle infra. Go south ~100 km and they would have made the diversion with sharp corners, near impossible to take with the VM. Not because space or circumstances demanded it... but because they are [...]. Is this one of the older, narrower, 2-direction paths? I can also show you a town where everything they change regarding roads ends up making it worse for cyclists...

It's not luck. We looked all around the Netherlands before deciding to live in Assen and we chose this place because it is exceptionally good for cycling even compared with other Dutch cities and provinces. There are indeed far worse problems in other places. I've experienced them myself. I think it would help everywhere to learn from best practice and I always warn people that not everything they can find in NL is as good as it can be Yes this is an older narrower path. It's not very heavily used and there is a wider alternative so in this case it's not a huge problem. Nevertheless this is being upgraded at present. Better junctions just behind me in the video, for instance.

Did you also check who was responsible for that nice infra? I have a feeling it can come down to a single person (wethouder) (alderman?). I know of some that personally get involved in road design in their municipality, for the better. One election later that person and it's good influence might be lost. One place where I sometimes complain I pretty much always get the response that it "complies with the minimum demands of the guidelines".

@@jcvjcvjcvjcv To consistantly improve cycling infrastructure, you do need a supportive network of politicians, civil servants, experts, media and grass root "warriors". Drenthe is one of those Provinces (regions) that put a lot of joint effort into bicycle infrastructure, because they really want to attract tourists, which helps the economy. And on the silly side, they make RU-vid videos about "epic" 50 km (30miles) cyling tours through nature, and even promote cycling on rooftops: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XftdjzOpl_I.html
