Yeah, it is art. It has sensors which monitor the traffic and when there is a lot of it, it starts smoking (I think the idea was that when there are a lot of people, he gets excited, but I'm not really sure). He also has a name: he is called Mannes and the idea is that when you return home (to Assen) there will always be someone waiting for you.
We went from one tunnel to three. In 2014 there was one pedestrian/cycle tunnel under the railway lines. That tunnel was modified to include the new expanded cycle parking. You can see part of it at the exit from the bicycle parking here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z8u1_QfQZ3Q.html The building of the new station also required building a second pedestrian only tunnel between the platforms and instead of having busy roads and a traffic light junction in front of the station, all the motor traffic was sent through its own new tunnel which you see in this video. There are more details here: www.aviewfromthecyclepath.com/search/label/assen_ns Is that "meh" ?
@@C0deH0wler I'm not a fan of more infra for cars either, and yes there is a new tunnel here for cars. It's an improvement for everyone over the old situation. You can see how it was in this video (heading South to North):ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E5SA_25heZU.html I made that older video when it was proposed to demolish the old station because I was concerned that the new situation would actually be worse than the old. It's not the case. This is a definite improvement.
