Hello Grzegorz - your magnificent visuals - the shots of Manhattan remind me that New York City is the undisputed Capitol of the World. That famous sound "I'l take Manhattan" is given a fun - clever arrangement - here - while even though - it's been performed by everybody - anybody and their "proverbial" brother - it has been - frequently rendered "incompetently done" and that's being kind to various artists who messed it up. At any rate - love everything about this vid! Great Saturday to you!!!
What a delightful surprise! I had no idea this song goes back to the mid twenties! Love this as a snappy foxtrot. Great early electrical recording. Great pics! Thanks for making this terrific video!
Selvin's jazzy version of that famous tune had been the forst I ever heard, so it was almost a shock for me when sometime in the late 1970s I heard the Ella's "I'll Take Manhattan" ehich was sung in her typical bluesy & dreamy style. And, ofcourse - it immediately became one of my favourites and when in NYC, I did quite often hum it to myself while poking days and nights about the nooks and crannies of the City of The Cities...
Superb salute to the city of my birth, which, alas, I long ago left but still feel in my heart as home. Among the great vids, 1:14 is a masterpiece as well as 1:07. Though not the tallest, the Chrysler Building is the most beautiful skyscraper on the world.
Thank you, Elisabeth. When I stayed in Manhattan, I wished I did not have to sleep alt all. I stayed in the very heart of Manhattan, at St. Marks Place so I knew quite well what meant the popular prase about NY as "the city which never sleeps".
Yes, I also love that picture with some 1940s' lady stretching her feet in elegant walking shoes, up on the balustrade of the terrace overlooking Manhattan's misty skyline...
Pozdrawiam i dziękuję!
Viewing these sumptuous shots of the Big Apple, it's easy to understand why the great Rodgers & Hart were raving about ol' Manhattan. ... I wonder if Selvin's interpolation of "The Sidewalks of New York" made the songwriting team as angry as did Bing Crosby's insistence on the inclusion of "Swanee River" in their score for the film, "Mississippi." Splendid, Grzegorz!
“And tell me what street compares to Mott Street in July” was a very funny line in 1925 because Mott Street in July smelled of all the rotting fish in garbage to be picked up by the sanitation trucks.
