I WOULD SAY ITS POSSIBLE!!! SOME SCIENCE BELIVE TIME IS LIKE A RIVER AND WE ARE CONSTANTLY FLOWING DOWNSTREAM BUT YOU CAN ALWAYS PADDLE BACK UP RIVER OR PADDLE FASTER DOWN STREAM.
2011 anime was actually soooo stacked its crazy. i wonder if we'll ever get such an insane year ever again
Год назад
Yeah, I couldn't believe it at first that so many iconic anime series came out in the same year. I never associated many series I watched with a specific year, because it's quite common to not watch them the year they come out. But oh boy ! Steins;Gate, AnoHana, HxH, Blue Exorcist, Madoka Magica, Nichijou AND Fate/Zero ?! That's hard to beat.
@ yeah i agree. All those animes are still talked about to this day. the only way we're gonna know if a year of anime is goated is years later when we're still talking about it. And in this case 2011 was 12 years ago
I think 2007 are more stack with Code Geass, Gurenragan, Lucky☆Star, Bokura no, Hayate no Gotoku!, Higurashi, School Days, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Clannad, Gundam 00, Kodomo no Jikan, Minami-ke, Shakugan no Shana II
I heard the hype, watched it...and as with all hyped shows it was actually one of the worst anime i've seen up there with disappointments like steins gate, gintama, evangelion, legend of galactic heroes, angel beats, mirai nikki, FLCL, the tatami galaxy, code geass, gundam series, ergo proxy, paranoia agent, texhnolyze, etc..
@@SpookyIsReal sure I don't care if people think it's bait or get triggered in the comments, people need to learn that the anime is not as good as they think and the anime is actually kinda trash. I believe it's important to read my comment, because you won't find anywhere on the internet anyone talking bad about steins gate, that may make people think it's a good anime. Bad reviews are very important to let people know the anime is trash so then people know to skip it.
I still believe to this day that Guilty Crown, if not for the plot, should be remembered for the music. All OPs and EDs being composed by ryo (supercell) and Hiroyuki Sawano's OST. Incredible music throughout.
@@Sensei_gojo I respectfully disagree, I understand it's not for everyone but for the time it came out, I would argue it's quite decent and combined with great animation and music, it makes it good, not great at any shape or form but not bad as some people like yourself say it was
I gave HxH, steins gate, fate zero, and madoka magica all 10/10, though I didn't watch them in 2011, would've been a hell of year if I could watch them in real time back then
Please definitely do more years around this time. It's so fun to see someone else around my age revisit anime from that time, that are often forgotten now, as an adult and think about how they've aged over the years
All I can say about HxH is that there is an ending and 100% worth watching. Sure, the story is still going but they feel more like side quests that you REALLY want to explore. If you want to continue after the anime, the manga has a decent amount of content to satisfy your curiosity and will be [allegedly] continuing.
I agree: in my mind, the election arc is the end of the series and everything afterwards is bonus content. I appreciate every time he's put out 10 chapters and have read them via the SJ app, but I'm not expecting Togashi to finish this current storyline.
I watched Future Diary last year for the first time as a 22 year old. Honestly, I was engaged the whole time just by how insane everything happening kept getting; it was an unintentionally hilarious gem.
Wow... future diary was literally like one the first animes that I watched alongside Higurashi when the yandere archetype was becoming really popular and the funny part is I was a child when I watched those and it was one hell of a start to get introduced in the anime world lol it was such a roller coaster type of series and now I'm almost about to graduate from High School it really does feel like time flies really fast.
Mirai Nikki was one of my first anime ever. After all these years, I don’t remember the show at all, but it was enjoyable for me (and after watching it, I really felt in love with Yuno, now I still like her but there are other waifu that i prefer more, for example Kurisu). I agree with HxH and Steins; Gate (I’d personally put Madoka Magica in S tier as well).
I feel like I’m the only one who ever got the hype for madoka magica. Like yeah the cute magical girl anime has a twist and gets all dark and shit but it’s still a magical girl anime haha idk just wasn’t for me
@@sharebear421 When a character died because protagonist was too indecisive, I knew it's not for me. Kinda like with E's Otherwise, where protag got one if his few potential allies killed because he decided to pacifist a bit too hard and never loaded his gun.
A year I would love to see you going through is 2006. So many good series in there such as S&W, Hellsing Ultimate, Dog Days, Higurashi,... The tier list is solid, my only change would be Madoka from A to S, but there's a lot of personal bias in that opinion 😅 It was became a source of inspiration (philosophy-wise) for me.
I watched Mirai Nikki in 2016 or 2017. Back then I was in high school and I thought it was pretty good. Not amazing, just good. It was actually one of the first few anime I've watched and it served a special purpose for me - it showed me that anime is not just shonen and generic shows. There's a lot of better shows that could've done the same thing but Mirai Nikki holds a special place in my heart just for that. It was very different to everything I had seen so far and that made me more interested in anime in general even if back then it was only a 7/10 for me and now it's more like 5-6
tbf it's a good starter anime to show exactly what you said, it can be bloody and quite brutal nowadays it has been replaced by shows like AOT, JJK, CSM or Demon Slayer
I've changed my mind on Mirai Nikki twice. The first time I watched it mostly blind and I was just excited and following the story, slowly noticing things that bug me about it, but brushed them away. After finishing and rethinking, comparing it to other shows, I found more and more flaws and started to really dislike it. The later, I came back to it and realized that they actually dared to put together a very unique and less expected set of characters and that this show actually gives you something you often find yourself secretly craving while watching one of these standard fare shows with the stoic hero and the perfect little waifu and the hyper comedic relief character.
same actually. I was in the 7th grade in 2017. it was so cool but it was my first anime so I found it cool the first time I watched. Not sure if I'd see it the same way if I were to watch it again. The only thing I remember was how good the plot twist was but I think I wouldn't be able to bear with the MC this time
I respect your personal opinion about the show but that anime was shit and full of flaws. The plot twist at the end was just horrible. The only character i liked was minine and they ruined her too
I have yet to watch the Nichijou anime, but every volume of the manga had me anywhere from chuckling to full-on belly laughing more than once. IMO if Monty Python is the quintessential example of British absurdist humor, then Nichijou is the quintessential example of Japanese absurdist humor.
@@amandak.4246I have watched nichijou and for me it was really bad watched 15 episode but it was just cute girls doing average voice acting Not that it is bad but it is not comedy Animation on some areas are good but it doesn't feel like comedy Panels of comedy are average I would say watch Asobi asobe
Waiting for Hunter x Hunter to finish is like waiting for winds of winter (book 6 of game of thrones) to come out. I’m fans of both so I get double pain.
Honestly the way I see it HxH already had its ending. Gon getting healed and meeting his father was originally his main goal so I consider that to be an ending in itself. Of course I would absolutely love the Dark Continent portion of the story to be continued and finished but I can live with us being stuck on the boat for all eternity at this point.
This era was such a breath of fresh air after the low of the 2000-2007 era of anime. 2011 in particular is so amazing. I still haven’t seen Fate/Zero as I will read the visual novel first and it is not yet translated officially yet, so I’m not in any rush to play it. Steins;Gate is a masterpiece, not much more to be said really. I need to watch Nichijou and Madoka Magica tho.
@@thomasffrench3639 If it helps, there was a brand new fan translation that came out last year which improves upon the original. It’s a great time to try out the VN.
Anohana is incredible. What made it so good for me was that despite having a general idea how it would end, the engaging storytelling up to that point made it hit super hard as you were drawn in so well. When I recommend it to others, I tell them they have to see it through to the end before they can pass any judgement. S tier for mine!
Madoka Magica is actually Chidamari Sketch, because of the fact that the original character designer in Aoki Ume, she based loads of Madoka Magica characters off of Hidamari Sketch characters, and even Madoka was originally gonna be voiced by Asumi Kana, the seiyuu for Yunocchi, the MC of Hidamari Sketch.
I've always thought 2011 was like the best year of anime period, but haven't looked at what's in it for a while. I just remembered Steins;Gate, Madoka, Fate/Zero mainly. but wow it's stacked with actually good stuff I forgot about or things I have tons of nostalgia for at least. like I forgot Freezing existed until now.
S;G is one of those shows I had to approach multiple times, that's how tough going through the beginning of it was. No regrets about eventually finishing it though.
Damn this video sure was a travel down in memory lane because 2011 was the year where I started watching anime on my brand new laptop (2011-2021. RIP). I watched all of these back then (except mirai nikki, hxh and ao no exorcist) and I agree with your takes, but I'd also put Ano Hana and Madoka in S tier. I really loved them and specially with Ano Hana, after I finished it, I kept rewatching the last episode for like 2 weeks once or twice a day and I would cry buckets everytime. Good times.
Fate VN > Zero Anime > UBW/HF Anime > Deen Fate( arguably this one would the best of the three if didn't try to mix things), comparing the FSN anime with Zero just doesn't work because most of the time people just do UBW or Zero when that's like comparing 1/3 content with a complete story and it doesn't help when the adaptations are pretty weak in comparison, if FSN from Ufotable is a 7 the VN is like a 9 or 10. Personally I find very interesting how most of the anime onlies prefer Zero while VN readers are the total opposite.
Fate/Zero is genuinely one of the most gripping action dramas I've ever seen. The pacing is perfect, the dialogue is just as great as the action, and the concept of the Holy Grail War is executed wonderfully. Everyone should watch it at least once.
@@invaderlum8600 nah, those are just the Stay/Night timeline (three versions: original, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven's Feel). Zero is the prequel of those three. Apocrypha is an alternate timeline. Strange/Fake is an alternate future of Stay/Night. Emiya Gohan is a slice of life Stay/Night. Kaleido Prisma Illya is a magical girl spin-off. Grand Order is massive and an alternate future of Stay/Night. Extra and Extella- Holy shit its many, no wonder newcomers had a harder time in Fate than Warhammer 40k lore
@@janpatrick736 I think you need to watch UBW before heaven's feel because it gets you comfortable in the world then heaven's feel pulls the rug out from under you
Garnt for FMA first, but he should just read the manga. Joey is too anal about reading it all at once, even if it does a disservice to the experience of Hunter x Hunter.
loved hearing your opinion on madoka magica, to this day, it is the only anime to make me full on cry, like not just tear up, but tears going down my face. All because of that damn ending. it's been my favorite anime ever since I've watched it, and no other series has topped it for me. (ALL MY OPINION)
after watching steins gate I started liking the slow paced animes like this. And also when there's no music just kinda boring (but for me not) and melancholic atmosphere where nothing in particular happens, rather just another usual day for mc. i love that. If I could change it I would it through another season of just simple melancholic days of the main characters.
Now THIS takes me back man. I recall watching Deadman wonderland and steins gate and just being blown away! Of course, I was a sophomore in college. I would goof off and watch it on a study break more than everything. I guess we are getting older man 🤣. Please do 2009! I cannot even remember what did come out!
Really nice list! For me i would swap Fate/Zero with Nichijou but other than that i agree with everything else! Please do 2012 anime next, that would be cool!
I rewatched Madoka magica somewhat recently (in the last year or so), since I was curious if the moments still lives up to how I remember it. Safe to say those moments still hits hard with the world and story. So I would bump it up one.
Based on his opinion on Nichijou, I don't get it why he didn't like Bocchi the Rock and call it "another K-on". For me, BTR is much more closer to Nichjou than K-on, I like it for literally the same reason.
Год назад
Agreed. K-on is much more of a slice-of-life first anime, as nichijou and bocchi are comedy anime first (with the added benefit of beeing unhinged in that department).
I'm glad joey talk and explain how steins gate is a masterpiece its really rare nowadays to find reviews of this show (because of how many anime are released throughout the years). The suspense, the comedy. romantic relationship between the mc, the buildup and complexity of the story. It really is an s tier (for me). Thank you joey.
I remember watching Future Diary with my brother, and when it concluded we got that empty feeling for weeks. Such a crushing, impactful ending. While better has come before and since, there wasn't much like it, not Yandere, but that kind of metaphysical pyschothriller deal. Characters were great, well designed with interesting stories. I do agree the plot is too convoluted for the author to maintain any kind of consistency or logic. A D ain't it, at least a C+ or B-, cause it was something that went so hard for the time.
Glad you put Steins;Gate in S-tier. It is still the best single season of anime ever made. Also yeah the real brilliance of Steins;Gate happens in the first half.
Not sure calling it the best, at least I wouldn't call it that, as I would find a few that are on par with it. But anyway, it's def in the top5 best anime with up to 26 episodes.
@@Sparquz I think it has a lot of faults as a second season/continuation of the original but if you see it as a sidestory that doesn't try to follow on with all the themes of the original, but is instead trying out new themes (which is exactly what S;G0 is) then yeah it is absolutely an amazing and interesting story. It also has the most hype moment in the series.
@@SavantGardeEX I have read the VN. It is absolutely NOT 1 to 1?? The VN tried a lot of different things that the anime cut or changed for the better. The anime is by far the better story, and this comes from someone who thinks visual novels are the best medium of storytelling. The things they did with the anime could only be done by the anime medium at it was all done masterfully. See how Steins;Gate Elite doesn't work nearly as well as the anime even though it has the same style and a lot of the same content. The original Steins;Gate anime used its medium to absolute perfection.
I still have the most vivid memory of how much existential crisis and lostness I felt when I was coming out of the theater after watching the Madoka Magica movie. And since then I've been afraid to rewatch the anime again haha And even so, it's still one of my top 10 anime of all time.
10:36 Not Joey casually forgetting about the Heaven's Feel movies. 11:41 Actually Joey, UBW came AFTER Fate/Zero. UBW was released in 2014. I think you're confusing UBW with the original Fate/Stay Night adaptation in 2006.
@aliffirdaus6986 Yeah but Joey isn't referring to that in the video. I think Joey was actually referring to the original Fate/Stay Night adaptation in 2006, he just mixed up the names.
2011-2012 was around the year I got into anime. I stopped watching religiously about 5 years ago, so my peak knowledge of anime was at that point in time. It shocks me that I know every single one of the series discussed here and damn the nostalgia is hitting me. Those were some of my first ever watches to get myself into anime. My personal favorite of the list is probably Steins;Gate. I sooo agree with you about it being slow that I almost completely gave up on it! I think I tried watching it 3 separate times, and I was only able to endure the slowness on the third try. Thank God I did because I remember sobbing my eyes out at one of the episodes. Watching commentaries on old anime makes me miss the good ol' days. I don't even watch anime anymore, so while I don't know most of the anime that's popped out in the last few years, it's weird to know that new anime fans don't know about these old gems anymore either.
I remember finishing some really sad, depressing ass anime, and wanting something more light heated so I can cheer up, so i started Madoka thinking "oh, a little cute magical girl show" 💀
11:46 Technically true that there is Unlimited Blade Works (UBW) came before Fate/Zero, but that is the Deen adaptation. We do not talk about the Deen adaptation.
Joey, fuckin READ HUNTER HUNTER!!! I get that you're busy, but you gotta do it, make it a stream activity or something, maybe do a swapsy where you watch hunter hunter and garnt finally watches FMAB. Connor is reading one piece, you need to do this!
Penguindrum is the best show of 2011, masterful directing and an intelligent original story from Ikuhara. It’s unique mix of ironic humor, philosophical musings on the nature of fate/free will, and sincerity to the struggles of love told in a surrealistic and symbolic way. Disappointing that it still has not got the recognition it deserves. Madoka, fate zero, and Steins gate are also brilliant.
The whole second half of guilty crown was turbulent to say the least, but it was so cool from character design, art style, all of the different voids and how they represented characters. It really helped show off ryo (supercell) which then gave us egoist AND the show had a sawano soundtrack too! regardless of whether or not people like the ending it’s still one of my all time favourites.
This was great. I forgot that 2011 had so many bangers, and also that I need to (re?)watch Guilty Crown because I can't remember what happened in it, or if I even watched it. I somehow clearly remember the OP and ED. I would love to see 2010 and/or 2012 version of this video.
Holy shit, I'm old. 2011 was over a decade ago? I remember when DigiCharat was a groundbreaker, and FLCL was the trippy homage to western animation we'd been waiting for.
Goddamnit this tier list made me realize i havent really watched anything in like 10 years. Just a show here or there but havent been excited for a season in a decade
Dang man, I remember hearing that year was an incredible year for anime, but I guess I didn't realize how many of my favorites came out then. Everything you have as S and A tier I've cited as some of my favorite anime of all time. I will say regarding HxH that it's one of my favorite shonen to be sure, but as an entire show (so far anyway) I'd personally rank it a little lower. There is one arc though that takes a huge chunk of it's runtime that's like SSS tier and probably what gives it so much good will as a show. One of my favorite arcs of any anime ever.
more of this yes, also maybe include some anime not on the top 10, if ano hana and nichijou was lower than Yandere anime in the list then who knows what's being missed. Its quite interesting looking at the seasonal seciton of MyanimeList, like a look in to the old anime zeitgeist.
