What are tjaps? Wondering if it is a vocabulary word related to Batiks?

@@lynnfrost-moon7661 tjap is the copper stamp that applies wax to the fabric, creating the design or print on the fabric. After the fabric is dyed again, the wax is removed, and fabric is dyed again, until the design is completed.

I'm an Island Batik Ambassador and yes, I can confirm that batiks are more or less preshrunk as the hand dying process uses very hot water to remove the wax, and the wax-resist dying process may be done multiple times on a particular fabric. In addition, modern quilt shop fabric (not just batiks) use inks that do not typically run and do not require prewashing. However, we've all had that one fabric that ran. So if you are a prewasher, go ahead and prewash your batiks as well. I'm not a prewasher and haven't had any issues despite being an Ambassador for 6 years. BUT I do not wash my quilts often (only when they get dirty) and when I do, I use Shout color catchers in the wash. As a general rule, the fabrics you might want to prewash are the highly saturated (deep with color) reds, purples, and blues. Also, if you combine batiks with other quilting cottons you might want to prewash the quilting cottons because your batiks have basically already been preshrunk. If you don't, the quilt will shrink unevenly (even so, quilting cottons are high quality so they won't shrink much). Hope this helps.

@Inquiring Quilter Thanks for that info! There's a rumor in the quilting world that if you wash batiks with color catchers "a chemical interaction" will cause the dyes to be drawn out or released from the batik fabric and fade them. This never made sense to me because of the process in making batiks, so I'm glad to see you mention you use color catchers. I appreciate your voice of experience!

So anyone have an answer?

I have heard the same for years, but never have experienced any bleeding, however, I do not wash my quilts. If you are concerned, you can prewash with synthropal or retayne to set the dyes for washed quilts.
