On this Robben Ford Interview: Robben shared literally dozens of personal stories in this conversation, including seeing Hendrix, Albert King, Mike Bloomfield, John Mayall and Mick Taylor in concert back in the late 60’s… Stories about working with Joni Mitchell, George Harrison (how they met is pretty cool), Greg Allman and Miles Davis… why he put his career on hold to study Buddhism and meditation, and what he got out of this experience… interesting stories about his dad… personal struggles he’s deal with over the course of his career… and some very good advice for musicians, or frankly, anyone in any endeavor. RARE for Robben to get this personal, so give this a listen now:

Living in Ojai at the same time as Robben it was possible to meet him, go have guitar lessons and even hang out once at his home. I met him too in Bakersfield before a gig and he spent s few minutes with my girlfriend and I. He was sometimes at the local Buddhist group meetings also. Without doubt he is one of the most genuine people you could ever meet; not an ounce of pretension or fakery. A true gentleman. Great interview...i could listen for hours more. Thank You.

I really enjoyed this interview. I've enjoyed Robben's music for almost 20 years but just recently sensed that he had an interest in Buddhism. Shortly after I started playing, I almost went to one of his seminars in Ohai but I was too intimidated as a beginner. Recently I've started to play again and I will be signing up for his Dojo, probably tomorrow. I've seen him in concert 4 times and am looking forward to seeing him again once we're over the pandemic.

Blood Sweat and Tears' second album with "openers" John Mayal's "Room to Move" was my very first concert experience. I kept searching blues players after that and mostly play guitar comp and fill and lead in a horn band these days. My Solo instrumental stuff I practice at home so as not to get too "stale" with the public stuff. I try not to "can" my parts but just concentrate on what works the best at any moment. It's the "sharing while playing" that keeps me interested. I learned to read and play piano before but the guitar helped me leave all that behind. I like being a lone arranger.

This a great balance of information both personal and professional. There are many takeaways here but having confidence in yourself as a player and musician and having a vision for your future and where you want to be is great advice. I’m 53 and figuring out where I want to go next and this really helped. I want to really listen to other musicians I play with and serve the song. Robben’s advice along those lines is very good as well. Very smart, thoughtful questions and I really enjoy this channel. Great work!!!!

Great interview..with an amazing artist..! I totally relate to Robben’s stories about going to AMAZING concerts in the early 70’s… but I grew up in Philly.. and we had the (original) Electric Factory.. 3 bucks for a ticket to see people like Traffic..Johnny Winter… Janis Joplin..Steppenwolf…and on and on..!! I,also, missed the Who at the Factory.. but saw them later at the Spectrum (a hockey arena) along with Zeppelin’s first tour…and countless other acts of the time..!! It was a totally awesome time.. and now that I’m much older, I can appreciate how lucky we were to exist then..!!!!!✌🏼😎❤️

An excellent and informative interview!! I don't understand though why people don't ask him about the Fender guitar he used for so many years. The only time I saw him was at Buddy Guy's in the late 80s. He was playing that of course. And why people don't ask him about the distorted tone that defined him for years and so many guitar players continue to emulate.

the tension that concentration requires is not compatible with the freedom to create. Creating is not something automatic, with formulas or 'shortcuts'... on the contrary, 'shortcuts', formulas, methods, etc... only lead along known paths, nothing different... If you want, need, dream of creating great songs, without unnecessary suffering, all I can say is that it goes hand in hand with discipline and carelessness... follow your heart...
