Robben Ford traded in his 1952 Gibson Les Paul for a 1954 that we had for sale. Here's a great jam between Robben and Jeff Mcerlain. Jeff is playing the 1954 Les Paul that Robben ended up trading the '52 for.

Ford really has mastered the jazz blues turnaround. I've been stealing his elegant licks for decades now. Plus his rhythm changes are as hip as it gets. Keep it coming Robben!
@sanjeevmraman
@sanjeevmraman 2 года назад
Agree except for the "rhythm changes" part. Where do you hear Robben playing that characteristic 32 bar I-vi-ii-V form in this video? I only hear him/ them playing a 12-bar blues and variations on it. Or do you mean "rhythmic" changes?

It's just A3 magnet P90's dude. 6.5k in the neck, 7-8.5k in the bridge. 500k pots and 0.015 or 0.020 caps. 50's wired so the hot lead goes on the cap on the middle lug.

Recently saw these two playing together at 3rd and Lindsley in Nashville very impressive performance. Got to meet them both afterwards Robin was dealing with a bad cold. They also signed the CD that Robin produced for Jeff. Definitely some cool tunes including a track called 1968

I feel sorry for anyone performing with Robben Ford - he is so unique to listen to anyone else sounds so average when no doubt they too are great. I remember the first time I listened to Robben Ford - My days of listening to Clapton were pretty much ruined! This guy just finds the next couple of gears musically that take him to another level.

Nice vid. Love the '52 LP GT explanied. Been digging some vids from The Rose in Pasadena. This guitar was there and sounded great. Also great Glaser came up with someting to alleviate a neck reset. Jam here is cool but had a 'where's 1' thing for me. Oh well. Vibe was what mattered.

perfect roles with Robben having the lead and Jeff playing just the perfect rhythm guitar. It is impossible to stay with Robbens tone, ideas, melodylines, dynamics, attack. But the good news is: he doesn' t ask you to try, regardless how good or bad you are, just stick with what you know and most of all stay original! That' s exactly the way I have been practising lately. And that' s how I believe most of the guitarist became known. The fewest became famous for their perfect technical abilities but their original style.

I learn so much just watching these two. Lessons in comping, soloing, communicating, listening. Tasteful stuff that truly makes me happy. Thanks, Robben, for tuning me into (so punny) Jeff's playing. By the way, sell me your Goldtop with the minihuckers! I think it's a 68 or 69?

this is great...Robben bought or aquired the 52 gold top only to "sell" it later to Jeff (who loves it, and so do i) and NOW apparently Robben is not so happy to have sold it to Jeff....:-) incidentally 1952 is a great vintage.......:-).....

Got to remember to read the video descriptions more. The gist of their discussion suggested there was a trade or sale going on of Robbins guitar and possible purchase of the one Jeff had, but never actually stated in conversation.

Man that 54 sounds SO good, so much thicker and solid than the 52. I really love the goldtops w P90s, especially those with the wraparound bridge like this, Just huge notes, solid and chunky - what you want!
@muttslounge8980
@muttslounge8980 2 года назад
Music City Bridge makes a great bridge that lets you palm mute and play like a 1954. MojoAxe is another that will do the trick. 1952s are the greatest hidden gems on the market. The necks are a joy to play; not too beefy, and consistent all the way up the neck. The tone is killer.

I just got an amazing feeling. For a while I've been feeling really down about being in my late 30s and having put zero effort into music, but then I see this video, and see two guys who are at least past 45 and looking like a million bucks with their style, articulation and warmth, and then they play the shit out of those Les Pauls. Absolutely love this. When I grow up, I want to be like you guys.

Best thing you can do for a trapeze Lester is get the Glaser or MojoAxe compensated bridge. My '53 trapeze was pretty unplayable when I got it with the stock bridge- it just kept digging into my wrist and made it extremely sore. I called up Joe Glaser and got his bridge and it made a world of difference- just as playable as my '54 wrap. I see Robben is using the Glaser here- highly recommended! Keith Urban and several other big name players use it as well. A lot of guys discount the early trap LP's because of that bridge (and neck angle), but seriously, once you put on the Glaser it becomes as playable as anything and those early P90's have an amazing tonality to them that I prefer to later ones; there's just a 'sweetness' there that you won't find even on a following year '54/'55 model. I don't know if it's that the pickups were actually different the first couple years or if the interaction with the tailpiece introduces something different to the equation? or maybe even the neck angle? Who knows...All I know for certain after years of buying/selling/trading is that every guitar is different and even if you follow a recipe no two will be alike. Too many variables out of our control that come into play. Anyways, great playing. FWIW, I prefer Robben's trapeze here- it has that sweetness and spank/chime like the '53 I had.

Informative post. I've seen a Keith Urban vid here lately and wodered if he had the neck reset to make his GT more playable. Awesome Glaser came up with something a little less invasive :)

Another thing I didn’t like about my ‘52 LP were small frets. Couldn’t do good bends. I know that Les Paul’s technique came mainly from jazz, so he designed the frets like he saw it.

I wish I could buy Robben Ford any guitars he wanted. It annoys me that people own beautiful old guitars that will never be played because their expensive. That was never the builders intention, much the same as any collectable. Especially cars. I play my instruments & I drive my old cars and I get immense satisfaction from doing so. Life is too short.

Seems like after it had a headstock break, Robben gold back '54 fell out of favor. I've played a '52. The strings wrap under the bridge bar, making muting (an essential part of Robben's style) impossible. Because of the flatter neck angle you can't put conventional hardware on it. Glaser came up with a very low profile bridge bar that makes the guitar playable.
